Bryn This Week 09.03.15 - Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School
Week beginning March 9th Issue 6 On Thursday 5th March, Year 11 pupils received the results of two exams taken in January (English Language Units 1 and 2). Definite grade boundary information will not be finalised until the summer but calculations based on last year’s figures indicate that 66% of Y11 pupils are on target for an overall grade of A*-C. The hard work and perseverance of Year 11 pupils has certainly paid off and they should feel extremely proud of what they have achieved so far. Many students have made the decision to have a second go at the exams in June with the aim of getting an even higher grade! Well done, Year 11. In addition to this, Year 10 are also hot on the trail of success! In January - just four months into the Key Stage 4 course - 65 Year 10 pupils undertook an early entry English Literature exam. Of these pupils, 95% achieved grades A*-C and 100% achieved grades A*-D. This group of boys as well as the rest of the students who visited the library last Thursday were left in no doubt as to the importance of reading, books and libraries, but were equally convinced that reading is fun and fundamental in our development as students and staff, parents and citizens. World Book Day is always a highlight in the dreary months of the early part of spring term. The library, which is usually a pretty vibrant place, is given a makeover of epic proportions and this year was no exception. The theme was sport and Mrs Humphreys’ no holds barred attitude raised her game and took the venue to a new level. It was a veritable treasure house of sporting equipment and decoration that transformed the library into a wonderland for the sports enthusiast. Mike Church was back as well, and being a keen footballer himself entered fully into the swing of things. He was his usual effervescent self and seemed thrilled to be back in Bryn Celynnog or, Bather Comp as he calls us. Put him on the judo mat and he would show you that he is a force to be reckoned with, a competitor, a contender and a champion. He would still be the respectful and polite young man but he would also be very, very hard to beat in a sport that demands physical and mental strength. Gymnastics Gym Mrs Balfry Orchestra P2 Mr Harris Wednesday Year 9 Touch Rugby He represented Bryn Celynnog in Sheffield last Saturday (07/03/2015), and defeated several other judo players en route to his gold medal. Luke is therefore the new British Schools Champion (under90kgs) for 2015. This is a massive achievement in a national junior sporting event and Luke has performed to the highest level in winning this title. In Bryn Celynnog we were aware that Luke was a promising athlete but he is so laid back and modest that we were unaware, until very recently, how much progress he was making in Judo. If you bumped into him around school he would probably apologise to you even though it was not his fault. You would think he was a fine example of what we expect in a Bryn Celynnog pupil. He is polite and well mannered, hardworking and dedicated to his subjects, always in the right place at the right time, with the correct equipment and very well respected by his peers. Sports Hall Mr Roberts Orchestra P2 Mr Harris Thursday Gymnastics Gym Mrs Balfry Choir Practice P2 So when you see Luke around school over the next few days please congratulate him warmly, but don’t expect too much of a reaction as he will probably be as low key and humble as ever. Well done Luke, you are a great ambassador for us all and for your sport and a great example to all pupils at Bryn Celynnog.
