For Students: Swarthout Awards in Writing I’m hoping you’ll help us spread the word about the annual Swarthout Awards in Writing, a creative writing competition open to ASU students campus-wide. Submissions are due Tuesday, March 17. See guidelines below and a recent ASU News article: https://asunews.asu.edu/20150227-swarthout-awards-2015. If you’d help us reach your students, we’d appreciate it! THE 53rd ANNUAL GLENDON & KATHRYN SWARTHOUT AWARDS IN WRITING FICTION AND POETRY GUIDELINES 1) There will be eight awards given annually, known as the “Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout Awards in Writing.” These will consist of a first, second, and third prize and honorable mention in poetry; and a first, second, and third prize and honorable mention in fiction. In 2015, first prizes will be $2300, second prizes $1200, third prizes $850, and honorable mention awards $200. Winners must be present at the awards ceremony on April 21, 2015. Otherwise, the prize money will be returned to the Swarthout Fund for next year’s prizes. 2) Competition will be open to students not yet twenty-six (26) years of age by the entry date for the awards (March 17, 2015) and enrolled not less than half-time in any college of Arizona State University. 3) Each student may submit a manuscript of up to six pages of poetry and/or one fiction manuscript—up to thirty (30) pages—consisting of a short story, a novel, or a section thereof. 4) There will be no repeat winners of first prizes within a category: fiction or poetry. 5) Entry forms can be downloaded from http://english.clas.asu.edu/scholarships-swarthout. Entries must be turned in at the Department of English office, LL542. 6) The student’s name must appear only on the entry form, and not on the title page or on the pages of the text. Turn in two copies of your poetry or your fiction manuscript. Each entry (poetry or fiction) must be accompanied by one entry form. Incomplete or incorrect entries will not be reviewed. 7) DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 4:00 p.m. No extension to this deadline will be made. Please deliver entries to the Department of English office, LL542. 8) The ceremony for the 53rd annual GLENDON & KATHRYN SWARTHOUT Awards in Writing will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at the ASU University Club. Winners must be present at the awards ceremony. The Fall 2015 McCain Institute Policy Design Studio & Internship Program is a great opportunity to: · · · · Experience life in Washington DC for the semester while earning 12 upper division Political Science credits. Gain valuable skills and hands-on work experience as an intern at an organization of interest to you (options include, but are not limited to, the White House, Congress, courts, government agencies, advocacy groups, media outlets, museums, think tanks, and nonprofits). Research solutions to real world foreign policy issues in a weekly seminar taught by a former U.S. Ambassador. Visit government agencies and historical sites and attend networking events.
