Meet our rhubarb supplier…
Michael Gayner is Aldi Ireland’s first ever rhubarb supplier. He currently farms
12 acres of rhubarb on his farm in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny. We spoke to Michael,
who let us in on a few trade secrets about growing rhubarb.
What kind of rhubarb
do you grow?
How much rhubarb can one
plant grow?
“We grow both types of rhubarb: fieldharvested ‘garden’ rhubarb and the highly
prized ‘forced’ type, which is grown in the
dark, indoors.”
“Each rhubarb plant will produce up to 12
sticks each time it is picked and could be
picked 2 or even 3 times between March and
September depending on the weather.”
With his care and attention to every stage
of the farm to fork process, from growing,
harvesting, cleaning, grading, preparation
through to packaging and shipping,
Michael Gayner’s Rhubarb is of the highest,
consistent quality.
What is the picking process?
“Each rhubarb stick is carefully hand
picked and trimmed by a dedicated and
experienced team. They are trimmed and
packed within hours of being harvested and
dispatched overnight to the Aldi stores.”
