THE SOUTH AFRICAN INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS MASTERING POWER SYSTEM FAULT CALCULATIONS SAIEE-0952-V : 2 CPD credits : Category 1 Corporate Conference Centre, 101 Edward Drive, Dowerglen, Edenvale, JHB OVERVIEW Designers users of electrical power systems are forced to calculate the magnitudes of short-circuit faults that can occur in different parts of these systems. Fault currents depend on source-impedances and the pre-fault voltages in these systems where faults occur. In designing a new power system or extending an existing one, the only practical method of establishing fault levels is through calculation. Symmetric three-phase faults usually lead to the maximum fault currents and the highest stress to power system components and are the simplest to calculate and the starting place for fault calculations. However fault level calculations are unfortunately not always limited to symmetric type faults and other types have to be calculated accurately in order to establish layouts and designs for substations and their earthing systems. The design of these systems has to cater for the calculation of step-and-touch potentials and the specifications of grounding-systems which require the accurate calculation of non-symmetric fault magnitudes. The calculation of these types of fault, require a more sophisticated approach requiring the use of Symmetrical Components Theory. It is the aim of this course to familiarise delegates with the fundamental concepts involved in Electrical Protection Fault Calculation. This will enhance their understanding of the software they use, expand their fields of application of such software and increased their confidence & skills in using it. D.Eng.Elect (RAU), FSAIEE Piet began his career in 1956 and has progressed through the ranks to become Resident Engineer and Project Engineer in the operating and construction of three large new mines. He made a major change to his career midway, after being sponsored byh the Anglo American Corporation of SA for full time study at RAU. After completing the B.Eng degree, he was employed with the University as Laboratory manager and became a consultant for AEC in the development of Ultra High Power Pulse Laser Systems and completed his Master’s and Doctorate studies in that field. Piet became interested in harmonics and power Quality in 1992 when he engaged in the design of harmonic mitigation systems for a large laser plant at the AEC. He authored and co-authored several International papers on Harmonics and power quality related subjects which have received wide citation and some of which are quoted in international standards.
