AGM & Books for Borneo
This week our AGM will resume and conclude with the presentation and adoption of financial
statements and the election of directors. As President Martin notes: “There is an awful lot of work
that goes on throughout the year to support the running of your Club. This week I would like to
highlight and thank Bruce Phillips’ work as Treasurer, supported by Past Treasurer Don Shanks
(who files our returns to the Registrar of Incorporated Societies and DIA Charities Services) and our
Auditor, Peter Chisholm.
I would also like to thank our Secretary, Richard Hutchinson, who is always doing something behind
the scenes for the Club, such as sending out Board or AGM meeting agendas or minutes. Just an
example – while I get to hand out awards and certificates on special occasions like St Patrick’s
night, it is Richard (often with help from Mary) who orders, or prepares, prints and frames
these. Congratulations Richard on last week celebrating 20 years with Tawa Rotary, although I
understand you have been a Rotarian for over 30 years in various Clubs.”
Past Pres. Irene Corpuz will also talk on the Books for Borneo Rotary project – a significant effort
that was initiated in 2013 and involved collecting children’s books, sorting, labelling and then
shipping the books to Borneo in early 2015.

PolioPlus fundraiser
We had a very enjoyable movie evening last Tuesday at the Lighthouse Pauatahanui. Thank you
for supporting Rotary’s efforts to remove polio from the world. We raised $500 towards End Polio
Now which will be $1,500, with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s contribution of 2 for
1. Thanks to our organiser and Rotary Foundation Director Richard Herbert for what he rightly
describes as “a fantastic effort by the club”.
Rotary Book Fair
There was a good turnout of members last Sunday at Tawa New World to receive the first of many
books for the Tawa Rotary Book Fair. With our usual key leaders Doug and Frances Burrus
unavailable this year, PE Ken’s team will be looking for support from across the Club. Working bee
times will be set that should suit contributions from everyone. On the basis of Sunday’s turnout, we
are confident of good support.
Defibrillator Training
A large group of Tawa Bowling Club members turned out for the defibrillator training session last
Monday and a smaller group of Tawa Rotarians. Grant Traill, President of the Tawa Bowling Club,
thanked Tawa Rotary for our donation, which was assisted by a District Grant from the Rotary
Foundation.
Rotary NZ - Vanuatu update
Rotary New Zealand appeal for funds to support our Neighbours in Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam
is receiving a good response with donations coming in from as far away as the UK and Europe.
If you really love movies and a good cause, how about joining the Rotary Club of Wellington South
at the premier of the movie Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren to raise funds for the Vanuatu
relief effort? Wednesday 8 April at 8.15 pm is the time, the Roxy Cinema Miramar is the venue and
tickets cost $20. Details can be found on their Facebook page
