NEWSLETTER-April-201.. - Churchmead C of E (VA) School
Churchmead School Newsletter April 2015 Believe to Achieve Letter from the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carer This term the achievements of our students have inspired those within and beyond our school community. The many visitors being shown around the school have repeatedly praised the school in all that it is doing to support young people in their learning. Encouraging the very best in our students has been a constant theme. The Year 11 art exam pieces shown here highlight the talent and dedication that Churchmead students have demonstrated in their work. Denise Loeri Fernandez - Y11 Thank you to parents who supported our evening functions. The performing arts evening and our prize giving evening provided fantastic opportunities to show and recognise extensive talent at Churchmead school. The compassion demonstrated by each of the house teams has also been impressive through the many charity events that have been held. These events have been led by the students. Their creativity and team work have continue to excel in their charitable achievements. In the new term, Year 10 students will be able to apply to be prefects, ambassador prefects, Head Girl and Head Boy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Denise Loeri-Fernandez (Head Girl) and Azeem Ali (Head Boy) for all their hard work throughout the year. Rebecca Beel – Y11 Year 11 have their final exams now in sight and should be working to achieve the very best outcomes. Easter holiday programmes are in place to support students in their final preparations. I would like to wish all Year 11s well throughout their exams. Our Easter service was held at St Mary’s Church with the school drama group and the school choir leading the service. Students had time to reflect on the Easter service and to look at how they can demonstrate courage, compassion and commitment on a daily basis. May I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Easter. Chris Tomes Headteacher Gursharan Matharoo – Y11 School Prayer Churchmead students were asked to pause and reflect on the school and create a prayer for our weekly worship. We are very proud of our students and their thoughts behind the prayer, expressing their compassion for others and their determination to succeed. We would like to share our prayer with you... As part of the Magna Carta 800th celebrations, RBWM set a challenge to schools across the borough; the pupils had to design a ‘Great Charter’ for the 21st century. Our pupils rose to the challenge and 15 pieces of work were chosen to be part of a prestigious exhibition at Windsor Castle. On 19 March 2015, during the official opening of the exhibition, Saffron Gharu won a highly commended prize, and Churchmead won the overall award for the best school. The event was hosted by the Dean of Windsor and Sir Robert Worcester The pupils work is on display around the cloisters at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. The exhibition is open to the public from Monday 16th March until Thursday 9th April, and anyone with an RBWM Advantage card is entitled to free entry to Windsor Castle. It is estimated that over 1 million tourists will see the exhibition. Well done to our finalists! GCSE Catering Practical Jack Beldom Year 10 visit to BA Language Centre, by Virginia Cheng On 25 February, the Year 10 French class went to British Airways Language Centre. They spent the day practising their French vocabulary as well as learning a little about British Airways. They told us about the different jobs and a little about the history of British Airways and how it changed throughout the years in a museum tour. During our trip, students were able to dress up and experience what it would feel like to being an air hostess or captain. They also participated in a competition, where all the Year 10s had to separate into four groups and compete against each other in a game called Pictionary. Overall the day went smoothly and the Year 10 French class had a great time! Year 10 French class at BA Headquarters with Mrs Kahvo and Mr Guardiola The school nursing team will be sending out immunisation forms for students in Years 8 and 11 who have not yet been immunised against MMR. Please look out for the immunisation permission form that your child will be bringing home. Immunisations will take place on Monday 27 April 2015. Water Bottles As the weather is beginning to warm up, please ensure that your child has a water bottle in school at all times. Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March were two big days for Churchmead School as it was the annual Gym and Dance show, which was held at The Windsor Boys School. This year the show was called The Reader; each school chose a book and based their performances on it. All of the shows were a great success; the hall was full of family, friends and teachers all wanting to come and see the talent that the children have and show their support and of course not forgetting the children who all performed amazingly creating a fantastic show for everyone. On the Thursday night performance the CEO for Get Berkshire Active, Mr Brett Nicholls was in attendance. In his email to thank The Windsor Sports Partnership he mentioned three performances he enjoyed and two of those performances were Churchmead School GCSE Dance Groups. Well Done Girls!
