Good morning/afternoon/evening. My name is ____________ and I am from BMG Research, an
independent research company. We have been commissioned by the Social Research Unit to
contact young people age 16 to 24 to take part in a survey about different aspects of life and their
use of services in Camden. Interviewer note: Ask AGE
If respondent is 15 or younger, or 25 or older, thank and close. If respondent is 16-24:
All respondents will be given a £5 voucher for taking part, which I will give you at the end, and can
be used in most high street shops. You can also opt into a prize draw at the end of the interview for the chance of winning an iPad. (If
asked: A total of 800 interviews will be conducted in Camden, so you have a 1 in 800 chance of
winning this).
I have an information sheet about the survey that I will leave with you [Provide information leaflet].
I am also going to ask you to read some statements about the survey so that you can decide
whether or not you wish to take part. When you have finished reading I will ask whether or not you
agree to take part, and we can tick the box accordingly. If you have any questions now, or at any
stage in the survey, please do not hesitate to ask me. Interviewer note: Hand computer unit over to participant

Introduction
This is an important research study that will help inform decision makers about the lives of young
people in Camden and how they interact with the services available. Please read the information on the next screen carefully. It is similar to what the interviewer told
you already. It explains about being a participant in this research study and allows you to make an
informed decision about whether you want to take part. This is called “informed consent.” If you
have questions about the information, you can ask the interviewer. Reader note: the visual format of this text will vary slightly from the computerised units, however the content will
remain the same.

What is the Minding the Gap project?
Minding the Gap is a collaboration between the London Borough of Camden and CCG. It is an
innovative project which aims to improve outcomes for young people aged 16-24. The project will
help local young people with their transition into adulthood by inspiring and supporting them to
excel. In addition to improving existing support services, the project also includes the
development of an integrated youth hub to bring together a range of services and skills that meet
the holistic needs of young people in this age range. As part of this project the team have commissioned a survey of young people aged 16-24. The
information gathered from the survey will help understand the needs of young people in Camden,
the degree to which young people access supports and services, and what could be done to
improve existing services and upcoming supports. Why have I been asked to take part?
Across Camden, young people between the ages of 16 and 24 are being asked to complete the
survey. We are knocking on doors and asking young people to take part across all urban and
semi-urban areas in Camden. Do I need to take part?
The survey is voluntary and you can stop taking the survey at any time if you decide not to
participate. You can also skip any questions you don’t want to answer by using the ‘refuse’ or ‘prefer not to
respond’ options. However we encourage you to answer as many questions as possible as it will
provide better quality information for planning future services. Vouchers will be given to all respondents who complete the full survey.
What will the survey ask me about? The survey will ask about you about many of aspects of your life, including your physical and
mental health, experiences growing up, drug and alcohol use and support teams and services you
use. Overall, the survey aims to capture information about 16-24 year olds that is not available
anywhere else in order to learn how to best serve the young people of Camden. This survey has
the potential to make a positive impact on your community, specifically on the services and
investments that the council make for 16-24 year olds. Many of the questions are sensitive but all
of your answers are completely confidential. You can stop taking the survey at any time and you
can refuse to answer any questions you do not wish to answer. The survey asks questions such
as: • How frequently have you smoked cigarettes during the past 30 days?
• Have you ever had a paid job, apart from casual or holiday work? • If you wanted to get a drug like cocaine, LSD, or amphetamines, how easy would it be for you
•

to get some?
On how many occasions (if any) have you used marijuana during the past 30 days? Have you ever stolen anything from anyone or anywhere, for example from a friend or stranger,
or from someone’s home, a school or business? How often have you carried a knife in the last 12 months? How many consensual sexual partners have you had in the last twelve months? Before age 18, how often did a parent or adult in your home ever hit, beat, kick, or physically
hurt you in any way? • If you want more information about a mental health service, where would you go or who would
you ask? There are no wrong answers, and a ‘don’t know’ option is provided where relevant.
Is the survey confidential?
Yes. No matter how you answer any questions in this survey, we will keep all of your responses
completely confidential. Before passing on survey responses to the Social Research Unit (who
will analyse the data), we will remove any information that could be used to identify you. The
researchers will only look at overall results – no young people will be identifiable in the analysis or
any reports.
The survey questions and delivery format ensure none of your responses require us to contact
social work services or the police. However, if you give additional information over and above the
survey that suggests you or someone else is at risk of serious harm, then the BMG interviewer will
follow their standard safeguarding policy and may contact those who could support you.
However, under no circumstances will any identifiable responses to any survey questions be
shared with anyone outside of BMG Research. How will this information be used?
Survey responses will be combined to create an overall insight into the lives of young people and
how they use services in the Borough of Camden. By obtaining the best information about the
needs of young people it will help local decision-makers prioritise areas for greater investment
and help design services to improve the lives of young people. Will any other information be shared with the Council? Only if you agree to it, BMG will pass on your name, address and date of birth to the council (not
any of your survey responses). This will be used to see what, if any, services you may have
accessed in the last year according to their records. At no point will the Council have access to
identifiable survey responses, nor the research teams have access to information about what
services identifiable individuals used. This will only be done if you agree to share your contact information with the Council. You will be
given an opportunity to actively consent or decline to this at the end of the survey. Will I hear from anyone again about this survey? Only if you express an interest at the end of the survey, SRU may contact you about taking part in
a follow up focus group and/or interview (that you would be paid for). The purpose of this follow
up would be to represent some ‘lived experiences’ of young people in Camden in order to bring to
life some aspects of the survey data, and also to offer young people an input and response to the
findings of this survey. You would receive £20 if you were invited to take part in the follow up. Is there an incentive for taking part? As a ‘thank you’ for your time, those completing the survey will receive a £5 voucher and be
entered into a prize draw. Out of the 800 surveys completed in this area, one individual will be
selected at random to win an iPad. (Note: If you prefer to opt out of prize draw, please tell the
interviewer at the end of the survey). Your participation will help inform important decisions about what can be done to understand and
better serve and support young people in your area. You will not personally receive any enhanced
or special services, nor will any services or benefits be taken away as a result of completing this
survey (remember, your responses will be completely confidential). Who is responsible for the survey?
The London Borough of Camden and the Camden Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
commissioned the survey, BMG Research is the independent Research Agency responsible for
conducting the fieldwork and the Social Research Unit is responsible for analysing the
anonymous survey information provided. Who should I contact if I have any further questions or concerns?
