T h e National in its last issue ex plains the article so often referred to as an editorial from the N ew Y o rk Times, b y publishing a letter from one o f the mailing clerks o f the Times stating that some such article did ap pear at about that time, hut It was from some person n ot connected with the editorial force o f the Times anc in the agricultural column o f the A p e t it io n is being circulated ask ing the Common Council to prohibit the sale o f intoxicating liquors in this place on Sundays. I f this is being done it is the duty o f the Common Council to put a stop to it without being petioned, and it is also the duty o f any person knowing o f any such sale to he made to report the same to the Prosecuting Attorney with the proof. The trouble is, people, will petition but will not themselves act. A lictlc more prompt action by those who know the laws to be violated will have a more salutary effect than a cord o f petitions. It is not to be pre sumed that the Common Council will resolve itself into a “ nosing commit tee,” particularly when it is no more the duty o f the members o f that body to do so t^an it is the duty of those who circulate or sign petitions. When you know the laws are violated, go to the proper officers. T he Greenback Congressional Con vention, held at Niles, Tuesday, nom inated Thomas It. This party, claiming to be a workingman’s party, a workingman’ s friend, &c., it was expected by 3ome that men identified with the workingman’s interests, and no others, would be put up. as their standard bearers, but they are doomed to be led by the old political hacks who could not get nominations from the other parties. It begins to show itself to some of the followers that the jarty was gotten up by these same old political hacks with the hopes that it would take them into the offices de nied them by the other parties, and that the cry “ for the people” is a sham. Look at every convention hold by them and you will seo that they have been controlled by the old wire pullers and not in one instance by the people.” W e doubt if one ex ception can be shown. D r o w r e d . —-Last Friday forenoon Master Freddie, a ten-vear-old son o f Sirs. James Graham, was drowned in the river at Berrien Springs. He was with two other boys about tho same age who had enticed him to the river, and when he was drowned they, instead o f giving the alarm, hid his clothes and went home. Towards even ing search was instituted, and by questioning the boys learned the facts as above, and about eleven o’ clock in tho evening found tho body in the river nearly half a mile below the scene o f the accident. The action of the boys he was with is rather unac countable, but they were said to have given as tlieir-reason; that they feared being put into jail.
