If you work in a civil society organisation (CSO), you could consider participation in this three-week course provided by Danida
Fellowship Centre (DFC). The course will be held in the Danish
capital, Copenhagen, between the 4th and the 22nd of May, 2015.
WHY A COURSE IN AID EFFECTIVENESS?
Managing and leading a CSO (or NGO) is becoming increasingly
complex. Knowledge, skills and strategies are necessary to
achieve results, enhance impact and remain effective.
The course addresses the specific challenges facing CSOs within
both national and global contexts. Empowerment of the poor and
marginalised, in relation to public policies, will be regarded as
highly important. Moreover, the course will thoroughly cover the
struggle for improved representative and participatory democracy,
which civil society leaders, staff and volunteers fight for in developing countries supported by Danish development cooperation
(Danida).
This course provides tools and methods to address major
challenges faced by CSOs, including the aid effectiveness agenda
(Paris Declaration, Accra Agenda for Action), which implies new
roles of civil society in development processes.
Communication technologies are another challenge as well as an
opportunity for civil society.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
The course aims to enhance participants‟ knowledge of the role
and potential of civil society in relation to the aid effectiveness
framework. Furthermore, participants will acquire tools for NGO
management, organisational development and capacity building.
The learning process will ensure an exchange of experiences,
while synergies will be created by the cross-cultural interaction
between participants from different continents. Visits to Danish
CSOs will also take place during the course, while experiences of
applying Danida‟s Civil Society Policy will be discussed.
The course provides you with core knowledge, practical skills and
tools to manage and lead a civil society organisation efficiently.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course is only for people who are affiliated with
organisations supported by Danida or Danish NGOs. The
course is targeted at managers at various levels from
CSOs/NGOs in countries of cooperation with Danish embassies
and/or Danish NGOs. Participants should have at least 3-5 years‟
working experience.
20 persons will be selected for the course in Denmark. The
participants will spend a considerable amount of time on an Action
Plan report. The work with the report will take place both during
daily classes and after class. In order for you as an organisation to
gain the most from course, it is important that you identify a „key
challenge‟ from your own organisation. After the course, each
participant will be able to implement the Action Plan with tools and
change processes learned during the course, and thereby
strengthen your organisation.
WHERE AND HOW
The course will be conducted at a venue in Copenhagen in an
environment conducive to adult learning.
Participants‟ own experiences will be compared to international
experiences and good practices presented during the course. This
ensures that the outcome of the course is relevant to the individual
participant and to the home organisation. The course will make
extensive use of action-oriented learning approaches and
participatory training methods.
WHAT IS THE COURSE CONTENT?
The course will consist of the following modules:
Module 1. Civil society in context
(3 days)
- CSOs in democratic societies, own countries & Denmark
- New roles and relations for civil society in a globalised
world. Opportunities for your CSO within this context?
- Response and strategies of civil society vis-à-vis the aid
effectiveness agenda from the Paris, Accra to Busan declarations. How to integrate these into civil society organisations?
Module 2. CSO/NGO management tools
(8 days)
- Organisational capacity development and facilitation of
change processes
- Results-based management and participatory approaches
- Human rights based approach and gender equality
- Partnerships - Southern CSOs - international NGOs
- Alliances, advocacy, legitimacy and accountability.
Module 3. Action plan and visits
(4 days)
- Visits to Danish NGOs based in Copenhagen
- Elaboration of an Action Plan for your home organisation,
which is based on a “key challenge” to be defined together
with your colleagues – prior to your departure to Denmark.
You will receive written comments from the course manager.
HOW IS THE COURSE FUNDED?
The course is co-funded by the Danida Capacity Development
Support Programme (DCDSP). Programmes/projects/NGOs are
charged DKK 2,500 per participant per study week. The funding
needed for this course is DKK 7,500 per participant (approx.
1,000 Euro). The fee is all-inclusive; covering study fees, return
air-ticket, accommodation, personal allowances, insurance, etc.
WHAT IS DANIDA FELLOWSHIP CENTRE?
Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) manages and implements the
Danida Capacity Development Support Programme (DCDSP),
which supplies training to partners supported by Denmark.
COURSE MANAGEMENT AND TEACHERS
DFC has contracted the Danish company INKA Consult
(www.inkaconsult.dk), to manage the training course together with
experienced trainers from the Danish umbrella NGO network
CISU (Civil Society in Development www.cisu.dk).
The course manager, Hans Peter Dejgaard, is specialised in
capacity development, e.g. organisational development, strategic
planning and change management in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He has been extensively involved in Danish NGOs and has
served as adviser to a large global advocacy initiative, with networks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He is experienced in
programme-based approaches and aid effectiveness.
APPLICATION
Application procedures must follow the procedures stipulated in
“Guidelines for Danida Fellowship”. Application forms can be
found at www.dfcentre.com and www.cso-course.dk and should
be submitted to DFC via the Danish Embassy in your country.
Deadline for submitting the forms to the Danish Embassy is the
6th of February 2015. Thereafter, the Embassy will forward the
application forms to DFC, who together with the course manager will select the participants.
The application forms can also be sent via your Danish NGO
partner (with the same deadline).
