GHANA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (GIMPA) Excellence in Leadership, Management and Administration Danida Capacity Development Support Programme Course in WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT 14- 25 September, 2015 Danida Fellowship Centre Sustaining development through research and learning INTRODUCTION The course in Women in Management will be held at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra, Ghana during the period 14 – 25 September, 2015. The fellowship course is held under the Danida Capacity Development Support Programme (DCDSP) and is open for applications from DANIDA’s priority countries in Africa. COURSE OBJECTIVE The main objective of the course is to provide insight into change management and the many challenges facing women and their working environment. Specifically, participants will after the course be able to: Adopt a high degree of flexibility and intellectual ability necessary for the successful management of organizations Lead strategic organizational changes in modern public/private sector organizations Assess the social, cultural and institutional environments of their organizations and the impact on women Influence management policy formulation and implementation to inculcate critical women issues in policies to create a more harmonious and appropriate environment for all employees. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of course, the participants will: Be able to develop skills for personal effectiveness at the work place Be able to develop strategies to enhance management performance at the top Be able to explore ways of developing effective networks; and Develop strategies to increase the contribution of other women towards the attainment of organizational goals Skills in incorporating gender mainstreaming in the strategies at the organizational level. APPROACH The learning process will engage participants through lectures, case studies, simulations, role plays, visits, field trips, syndicate/group discussions and development/presentation of Action Plans. COURSE CONTENTS To support the achievement of the course objectives, the course will include the following main sessions: Strategic Management for Organizational Performance Effective managers around the world recognize the role that strategic management plays in their organizations’ performance. Strategic management provides overall direction to any enterprise. As senior managers, participants need to have the basics of strategy and strategic management for effectiveness and efficiency. Performance Appraisal and Management Most organizations have some type of employee appraisal system and many are experiencing the shortcomings of manual staff evaluation system. The session will facilitate participants’ understanding of the strategic importance of undertaking Performance Appraisal and the purpose of Performance Appraisal. Public Policy Making: Perspectives and Experiences Public policy examines the major issues and institutions involved in the development and implementation of public policy. The session also surveys some contemporary issues in Ghanaian and other countries’ public policy such as gender, education, health care, welfare programs, and the economy. Managing Gender and Diversity at the Workplace The focus of gender issues in Ghana today should be to create the necessary environment for women to be in the mainstream and play a more vigorous role in the socio-economic activities in the country, especially in top decision making. Women in Leadership and Leadership in Practice The challenges of our time have called the attention to the need for the involvement of both men and women in leadership more than ever before. Participants will be engaged in leadership dialogue. In addition to the main sessions of the course, the participants will be introduced to the following supporting sessions during the course: Proposal Writing This course is intended to prepare participants for developing and writing project proposals and also consider general and specific techniques for its implementation. Participants will be taken through step-by step preparation of proposal writing, and monitoring and evaluation to aid them put their action plan into perspective. Effective Communication and Influencing Skills Strategic Communication is an important function which is critical to both managers and their organizations. This session will focus on the communication processes and skills to increase productivity among team members. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to discuss how best to influence others to be productive and understanding some challenging situations as well as managing conflicts. Stress Management and Executive Health This session will discuss healthy living with emphasis on preventive health. It will identify health concerns for women particularly in the mid-life and menopausal stages. The implications of the demands of managerial position on women’s health, sources of stress and how to enhance one’s general well being will be examined. Action Planning To strengthen the learning process and thus maximize the outcome of the course, the participants will as part of the programme develop an Action Plan individually or in a group, if the participants work within the same organization. There will be follow-ups on the plans. The plans will be presented to the class before the closing ceremony for discussion and review. TARGET GROUP / SELECTION CRITERIA Participants are expected to be women working at a managerial level in either the public or private sector or in civil society organizations; requirements include a relevant educational background and at least 3-5 years of professional experience working in senior management. APPLICATION PROCEDURES Application procedures are stipulated in ‘Guidelines for Danida Fellowships’ which together with the application forms can be downloaded from www.dfcentre.com. The fellowship application form should be filled by the applicant and must be endorsed by the Danida programme/project and the Embassy Desk Officer in order to ensure that the training is within the framework of national sector plans for capacity development. The Danish Embassy will forward the application form to Danida Fellowship Centre. Deadline for submitting the application forms to the Danish Embassy is 12 June 2015. Certification A Course Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the Course. Course Fee The course is co-funded by Danida Capacity Development Support Programme. After selection of course participants, the Danida programmes/projects will be charged a non-refundable amount of DKK 1,500 per participant per tutorial week. Thus, total funding needs are DKK 3,000. This includes study fee, accommodation and allowances as well as international air ticket for participants coming from other African countries. Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) DFC manages and implements the Danida Capacity Development Support Programme, which supplies training in support of capacity development in Danida’s development programmes. DFC is responsible for the educational, administrative and practical aspects of the training.
