Dilwyn Village Show 2015
Dilwyn Show - Bank Holiday Monday - May 4th
April - this means Easter School Holidays. How do we keep the children occupied and out
of mischief? The answer lies on the next page, practising and completing entries for the
Show competitions. Encourage them to enter. Don't leave it to the last minute (it isn't
homework after all)! There are a number of open classes as well. Let us have a bumper
number of entries this year. The Show Chairman wants to be properly challenged when
tasting the Victoria sponges! In each class, those placed 1st - 3rd receive the specially
commissioned 2015 Dilwyn Show Coaster (gold for 1st; silver for 2nd and blue for 3rd bronze is not a good colour on a black slate background).
The design this year is of Church House, the Grade II listed cottage (14th century origins)
opposite St. Mary's church. In prior years it featured St. Mary's church, the School, the
Crown, the Forge, the War Memorial, the Great House, the village green, the mill stone by
Karen Court and a number of general views of the village. This year's coaster is the 12th.
Full details about the Show can now be found on the village website,
www.dilwyn.com (follow the links on the Home Page)
Further show details will be included in the May Dilwynner.

Flicks in the Sticks!
"Paddington"
Friday 17th April 2015
Cedar Hall at 7.30.pm.
The Plot
From the beloved novels by Michael Bond and
producer David Heyman (HARRY POTTER),
PADDINGTON tells the story of the comic
misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by
Firth) who travels to the city in search of a home.
Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that
city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the
kindly Brown family who read the label around his
neck that says "Please look after this bear. Thank you,"
and offer him a temporary haven.
A charming and sweet-natured family film, full of wit and fun, skewed towards young
children but cheekily speckled with sly gags pitched at the older audience.
After an origin myth sequence set in darkest Peru (incidentally packed with some outrageous
campery), our young, ursine hero arrives in England, to be adopted by the Brown family in
their west London townhouse. It is updated from Michael Bond's original tales from the
1950’s and 60’s. Well, updated a bit.
Fusty-but-lovable Mr Brown is played with relish by Hugh Bonneville. Sally Hawkins is
Mrs Brown; nice neighbour Mr Gruber is played by Jim Broadbent and Peter Capaldi is the
horrid neighbour, Mr Curry. Julie Walters plays Mrs Bird, no longer the housekeeper, but a
distant relative (who evidently doesn't qualify for a first name). The villain of the piece is
Nicole Kidman, giving it the full Cruella de Vil as a sinister taxidermist called Millicent.
We hope that you will come along and enjoy these films in Dilwyn’s Cedar Hall.
Cabaret seating - own drinks and snacks may be brought if required.
However, tea, coffee, squash and biscuits will be available during the interval.
Weobley Blue Grass
Music Concert
Programme:
First, 20 minutes of Weobley’s own band, reborn as Alive
And Pickin and now bluesy, country and jazzy.
Saturday 9th May 2015
Then 50 minutes of The Remi Harris Quartet. Weobley
Music wouldn’t be the same without Remi, this year with
a percussionist for, as Remi says, ‘just a few numbers’.
7.30 pm at Weobley Village Hall,
HR4 8SN.
Tickets £10 (before 25th April)
then £11 (including at the door).
To book email
weobleymusic@hotmail.co.uk
or call 01544 318513
Finally, an hour of 3 Belgians and an ‘Irish immigrant’
who make up The Sons Of Navarone. They were voted
Best European Bluegrass Band in 2012, so this is probably
the best bluegrass outside the USA.
Book early – we sold out in 2013 and 2014!

FOSM Scarecrow Trail
Friends of St Marys School (FOSM) Summer Scarecrow Trail is getting off to a great start
and we have already collected 18 pledges of scarecrows ranging from the pre school and
Infants and Juniors at St Marys to the Scouts, Aspire Dance studio and the Crown Pub as
well as local residents. These will be displayed around the village on 11 July when people
can pay a small fee to enter the trail and guess the identity of our straw and papier mache
masterpieces.…
The theme is "Great Britons" and there is a list of 60+ historical characters to choose from.
All contributions are welcome and please do not be put off if you have never made a
scarecrow before or don't know where to start. I am happy to help where ever possible and
FOSM volunteers can assist with putting them up on the day if required.
If you can help support our brilliant village school by joining in with this event please contact
Allie Allin for further details on 01544 319345 or at The Red House opposite the village
hall car park."

HOPELANDS VILLAGE HALL
WEOBLEY 10AM - 2.00PM
On Saturday 18th April 2015 the Kington
Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team will be
visiting The Hopelands Village Hall, Weobley
between 10.00am and 2.00pm. Funding has
been secured from the police commissioner
to fund property marking kits. Please bring all
your hand and power tools, lawn mowers etc
to hall where the team will overtly mark them
for you FREE of charge. By doing this you
will greatly discourage any thief from stealing
them in the first place.
Come along and talk to the team about any
crime prevention advise you think would
benefit you. We will also be able to advise on
simple and cost effective alarms and further
property marking schemes.
It is hoped that signage will also be available
to display that your property is all marked.
See you there.

New members are
always welcome.
Last month it was a real treat to have Paul
Meanwell come and talk to us about his time
as a mounted policeman in Birmingham.
He told us how he first started and he also had
many interesting tales to tell, one of which
was how he and another mounted police
officer were separated from their group at a
football match in Birmingham and were
surrounded by very hostile fans. Luckily their
colleagues managed to get to them in time.
Paul ended up training new recruits many
years later and he obviously had a varied and
very interesting career.
This month we are having a demonstration
on pressed flowers by Yvonne Mott. This is
an open meeting so anyone is welcome to
come.

Geoffrey's Column
Geoffrey@10DPG.com
Under a lambent morning sky one day in late January,
a stork circled lazily overhead. Then with a flare of
its wings it made a perfect two point landing on the
croquet lawn. From its beak hung a sling, and nestling
in the sling were 2 Norfolk Terrier puppies.
The stork's name is Kim, and her journey had started
from Gladestrey. Welsh puppies! They told me how
pleased they were to see the dragon flying from the
church flagstaff on 1st March.
Their names are Bertie and Ali, shortened versions of their full pedigree names. They are full
brother and sister so steps sadly will need to be taken! Bertie is the one under Hilary's left
arm.
In another life we used to have a Norfolk called Paddington. His father, Nanfan Heckel, was
a Cruft's champion, and by happy coincidence the great great etc grandfather of these two.
As I write they are now 5 months old and sadly not very housetrained. They do egg each other
on so. And worse, they are adepts at the art of escapology.
Wonderful Graham Dyer came at 24 hour's notice to create "half fortress Perrymead". The
other half is imminent, and we are counting the hours. We cannot believe through how small
a hole a determined puppy can wriggle.
The morning constitutional happens at 7.30ish and we are rewarded? with the sound of mighty
woodpecker hammering on the steeple. I have been told that when the steeple was reshingled
some 40 years ago, cedar was used. This, being fairly soft, is a delicacy for woodpeckers.
The recent renewal was in oak, which may explain the sheer volume of noise, or maybe we
forgot to tell the woodpecker about the change.
Next month…. Chateau Perrymead
Weather Watch
Nature Watch
February, a dry month with just over
1.6 inches of rain, compared to the
6.9 inches during the deluges in
February last year. Not a drop of rain
in the gauge for the first eleven days
of the month. In fact the only thing
to trouble the rain gauge in that time
was the birds using it as a toilet. Not
unexpectedly
the
overnight
temperatures were below zero on
eighteen nights getting down to -7 at
one point. Quite a heavy hail storm
on the 21st and gale force winds on
the last night of the month.
In the 1960's the Robin was voted Britain’s
national bird. However there is now an
opportunity to vote once again. The online voting
is now live and will close at midnight May 7th
2015 – the date of the General Election. Britain’s
National Bird will be announced thereafter. The
following 10 birds have been nominated from an
original list of 60 iconic British birds that were
voted on last year.
Barn Owl Blackbird Blue Tit
Hen Harrier Kingfisher Mute Swan
Puffin Red Kite

On Wednesday 4th. March, the Branch was
treated to a stimulating talk on the subject of
'Orchard Origins' by Julia Merton, one of the
Project Officers for this organisation. 'Orchard
Origins' began about three years ago to
support
management
of
traditional
Herefordshire orchards, many of these now
being lost as more intensive large-scale
systems become necessary for commercial
reasons. To this end they have now established
links with 97 orchards, including two major
landowners. Further information is available

ANNUAL CHURCH FETE.
This will take place on Saturday June 13th on the Village green (or Cedar Hall if wet). All
the traditional stalls and games will be there plus we hope something new! Julie Hanson has

April Meeting
The last meeting for the winter programme will be on Wednesday 22nd of April at 7.30pm
at Hopelands when Julia Orton-Davies will tell us about the munitions factory at Rotherwas.
Summer Outing: Wednesday 24 June 2015
Outing by coach to Upton Cressett Hall near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, the home of Mr
William and Lady Laura Cash. The 2.30pm tour of the house and gardens will be followed
by tea and cake. We intend to leave Weobley by coach in mid-morning and stop for a light
lunch en route. If you would like to join us and are not a member of the History Society,
please request a booking form from Elizabeth Holley elizabeth3holley@btinternet.com,
01544 318789 or Stella Hurdidge stellahurdidge@btinternet.com, 01544 318819.
We anticipate that the cost for the tour, refreshments and the coach fare will be about
£25.00 per person. This will be finalised as soon as possible. We shall arrange to stop
somewhere for lunch on the way. You can choose to eat at the inn or bring a packed lunch.
Dating back to the Domesday Book, the ancient manorial complex of Upton Cressett
includes a fine Norman church, a medieval ornamental water garden with fish ponds and
moat, a Deserted Medieval Village and a Roman Site, regarded as one of the most
important in the Midlands outside Wroxeter.
Weobley Local History Museum
The Local History Museum in Back Lane, Weobley has amended opening hours for the
coming season which you might like to note. It is open from the beginning of April to the
end of September on Mondays from 10am to 1pm and on Thursdays from 2pm to 5pm.
It is also open on Bank Holiday Monday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm and at any other
reasonable time by arrangement. Please contact Gina Harley on 01544 318278 or Sue

It’s not by Magic …
Dilw
r
ynne
It’s not by magic that your Dilwynner parish magazine arrives
through your letter box but it is due to a team of volunteers
who donate some of their spare time to produce and distribute
the magazine.
We are looking again for community spirited volunteers to
help in several areas.
Editors
Having recently lost one of our editorial team, we are looking
for additional editors to help produce a few editions each year.
Full training will be given together with ongoing support from the editorial team. The
software used only runs under MS Windows. This is also an opportunity to learn new skills,
particularly in the area of Desktop publishing. See page 2 for Dilwynner contact details.
Printer
We print the Dilwynner in-house at the moment and are looking for a volunteer to assist
Peter Hammond in producing occasional print runs. Interested parties can ring Peter directly
on 01544 388721 and he will explain the requirements and procedures. The print run now
takes about 4 hours and as such is not an onerous task for anyone to take on occasionally. A
Windows PC is required together with temporary space for the printer and paper.
Distributors
We would also appreciate help in distributing the magazine to each parish household. It just
takes up a little time each month. If you can help then please use our contact details on page
2 to get in touch.
Contributors
We are constantly trying to improve the Dilwynner by increasing the variety of its articles.
If you have any interesting items to submit then we would be most grateful to receive them.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who support the Dilwynner, - the Parish
Council, the Dilwyn show committee, our loyal advertisers, contributors and you, our
readers. The team hopes that the magazine we produce justifies this high level of support, if we occasionally get things wrong, then it is certainly not through the want of trying!
Broadband Update
Any Old Bras
Latest: Weobley exchange area is
progressing well with engineering work
being complete on 50% of the 'Fibre to the
Cabinet' areas. We have to do a significant
amount of overhead cabling in this area.
We are due to carry out surveying of the
overhead routes to identify any additional
works required, such as tree cutting or new
poles to carry the load of extra cables.
Estimated completion is end of June.
Ladies, do you have any old or unwanted bras
to donate to charity ? The proprietors of 'An
Uplifting Experience', a bra fitting service, are
appealing for donations towards "Against
Breast Cancer", so please have a look in your
undies drawer and if you are able to help,
please drop you gift into Dot Teather at The
Bramlings or ring me (388744) and I will
collect. Thank you.

Heating Oil Syndicate
February order was excellent with a record of just over 22000 litres, not
quite matching the 30000 litres we did in the early days of the syndicate,
but not far off.
The delivery company was yet again OJ Williams at a price of 35.7p per
litre. I feel they were trying very hard for business and were keeping it very
low for syndicate buyers. Other companies just could not compete. This month though they
have put their prices up considerably. So it looks like we will be using someone else. Other
prices were Watson 35.9p, Beacon 37.5p, and Callow 35.8p.
Thank you everyone again for your orders. We are in a way in the driving seat which allows
us to ask for a very good discount price.
Just to let you know the procedure of the syndicate buying. Fact : the more orders and amount
we have the better the negotiating power. There is no administration charge unlike other
syndicates. I do it voluntarily to enable the price to be low for the members of this community.
Some syndicates can add as much as 3p per litre or even more to cover admin costs. That is
why my work is complete once the order is made and it is then left to you to attend to the
finances. While writing this, I can say at the moment the price is 37p from OJ Williams but
another company is quoting 34.7p. Thank you all again, old and new, for your support.
Minimum order 500 litres please by 20th of month

school in Dilwyn seeks an organised and
efficient Clerk to governors. St Mary's is a
small, friendly community school run as a free
school (similar to an academy). The Clerk will
be accountable to the governing body, working
effectively with the Chair of governors and
Principal. The Clerk's main role is to provide
professional clerking services to the governing
body and its committees. You will have the
following abilities and experience:
● Effective administrator: to schedule, plan
and prepare agendas and associated
paperwork in advance of meetings. Take
accurate notes at meetings and produce
well-presented minutes for distribution.
● Provide advice to the governing body so
experience and knowledge of the
requirements of school governance is
desirable.
● Manage
information
effectively
(attendance,
membership
details,
policies).
● Work well with others, be tactful and able
to deal with matters confidentially.
St Mary's primary is committed to
safeguarding and promoting the welfare of
children and expects all staff to do so.
Therefore this post will be subject to an
enhanced DBS check for working with
children.

April Origins
The Romans gave this month the Latin
name Aprilis but the derivation of this
name is uncertain. The traditional
source is from the verb aperire, "to
open", in allusion to its being the
season when trees and flowers begin
to "open". Since some of the Roman
months were named in honour of
divinities, and as April was sacred to
the goddess Venus, her festival being
held on the first day, it has been
suggested that Aprilis was originally
her month Aphrilis, from her
equivalent Greek goddess name
Aphrodite (Aphros), or from the
Etruscan name Apru.

Parish Council Meeting Minutes
Abridged version - full minutes on the Notice Boards and Website
Please note that these abridged minutes are prepared from the DRAFT version of the Council
Minutes, as prepared by the Parish Clerk, that have yet to be approved by the full Council.
Minutes of the Meeting of Dilwyn Parish Council
held in St Mary's School, Dilwyn on Tuesday, 3rd March 2015 starting at 7.30 pm
Present: All Councillors were present. In Attendance: Mr. Stephen Shield, Clerk, and 18
members of the public. Apology: Ward Councillor Mark Cooper
Questions from members of the public:
P143374/F Highway Farm, Little Dilwyn, Leominster, HR4 8EX: A member of the public
advised that the applicant in relation to this planning application had not consulted him and
he expressed his dissatisfaction to the Council about how the application had been handled
by Herefordshire Council. Cllrs. E Stilwell and T. Voogd advised that they had both been
led to believe that the applicant had consulted with neighbours about the proposals. Council
noted the comments relayed to the meeting by the resident. The Clerk advised that this
application had been considered by the Council in December and that no formal objection
had been submitted but a condition to monitor the work had been fed back to Herefordshire
Council. Action - Clerk to write to Planning Officer and copy in Cllr. Mark Cooper for
information.
P150403 - The Stables, Greenfields, Dilwyn, HR4 8JH: The applicants in relation to this
planning application were in attendance at the meeting and provided information in support
of their application, which was to be considered by Councillors later in the meeting.
Minutes of recent Parish Council meetings: The minutes of the recent Parish meetings dated
Tuesday 6th January 2015 and Tuesday 5th February 2015 were approved as an accurate
record.
Financial Matters:
a. To note the bank balances for February 2015.
The Clerk tabled accounts for February 2016 which were duly approved as follows:Current Account £9,118.48
Reserve Account £2,002.13
HUB Account £11,522.88
Income Bond £26,127.96
Grand Total - £48,771.45
The Clerk stated that he was preparing documents for the year-end which included making
the necessary arrangements for an internal auditor to inspect the accounts after the 31st March
2015. The internal financial examiners duly elected by Council will also be given the
opportunity to review financial correspondence.
The Clerk advised the Council that the Parish Precept demand of £11,570 had been confirmed
by Herefordshire Council and would be paid in two instalments of £5,785 on Friday 17th
April and Friday 18th September 2015. A Council Tax Support Grant of £668 has also been
confirmed by Herefordshire Council for the forthcoming financial year.
b. Invoices for payment were agreed: Full details may be seen in the unabridged version of
these minutes.
Page 23
Dilwynner - April 2015
c. To receive any updates on the external audit report: The Clerk advised that comments
agreed by Council in relation to the draft external audit report had been forwarded to Grant
Thornton for consideration. It is hoped that the final report will shortly be published.
Highways Matters:
1. Work for Parish Lengthsman - Issues identified with litter bins not being emptied around
the wider local community including the Green. Flooding issues identified at No. 1 The
Row and in Orchard Close. There have been concerns expressed by the Lengthsman about
the tree on the Village Triangle and its current state of health. It was noted by Council that
a report from Andrew Fathers Tree Surgery had suggested that only minor issues had been
identified following recent work on the tree. Cllr T. Voogd requested the Clerk to liaise with
the Insurance Company concerning this matter.
2. Footpath Officer - There have been a number of incidents of dog fouling on the public
footpaths and members of the community were encouraged to report any future incidents to
Herefordshire Council. There has also been an incident with dogs being left off the lead and
chasing sheep on the common. The Clerk was requested to investigate the contract and
funding from Herefordshire Council/Balfour Beatty in relation to the P3 Scheme for 2014/15.
Updates from the HUB Committee:
Cllr. Peter Kyles advised that recent meetings had taken place with the tenants regarding the
new lease and associated regulations. To progress the matter, an extraordinary meeting of
the HUB Committee will take place on Thursday 26th March at 7:00pm, followed by an
extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council on the same evening at 7.30pm.
Community Defibrillator and associated Storage Unit:
The Clerk advised that the Dilwyn Young Farmers had very kindly agreed to fund and
purchase the storage container for the defibrillator costing £600. Funds of £200 have also
been allocated by the group towards the cost for an electrician to install the container. Once
installed, the unit and container will become the responsibility of the Parish Council;
appropriate insurance will be arranged.
Standing Orders:
Refreshed standing orders will be approved by the new administration following the
forthcoming elections on Thursday 7th May 2015.
Correspondence received:
- Election nomination packs have been received and anyone wishing to be considered for
election should complete and return the necessary forms. A revised register of electors in
force from 2nd March 2015 has also been received.

Beer Cuisine Evening
An extremely well attended evening of beer inspired cuisine was held on the 21st of March
at the Crown Inn. With an imaginative selection of beer themed dishes for each course, there
was a choice to suit all tastes. It was obvious to all those that attended that a great deal of
time and effort had gone into the presentation of the dishes as well as their preparation and
cooking. Gayna, John and their hard working staff can be proud of presenting such a special
evening that was so thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended. We are sure that all who were
present must now be looking forward to the next themed evening.

Parish May Elections
Most people will be aware that the General Election is to be held on Thursday 7 May 2015.
However, there will also be elections for Town/Parish Councils including Dilwyn. All
existing councillors must seek re-election if they wish to remain as a Councillor.
With regard to Town/Parish Councils anyone can stand as a Councillor if they are at least
18 years old, they are a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of any
other member state of the European Union. In addition candidates must meet at least one
of the following qualifications:
● You are, and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the
parish/community in which you wish to stand
● You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the
parish/community during the whole 12 months before the day of your nomination and
the day of election
● Your main or only place of work during the 12 months prior to the day of nomination
and the day of election has been in the parish/community
● You have lived in the parish/community or within 3 miles of it during the whole 12
months before the day of nomination and the day of election
If you are interested and would be comfortable in speaking at Council meetings that are open
to the public and have the time to attend meetings and support the work of your local
Town/Parish Council then why not put yourself forward. You only need 2 local people to
support your nomination. It really is as simple as that.
If there are more candidates than vacancies, then an election will be held on the same day
as the General Election and the Herefordshire Council Election. If there are less candidates
than there are vacancies you would be elected unopposed.
You will find guidance about becoming a councillor on the Electoral Commission website
and the Clerk to your local Town/Parish Council can provide you with the appropriate
nomination paper. Alternatively you can contact the Elections Office at Herefordshire
Council on 01432 260107.

Your vote matters make sure you're in.
The way you register to vote has changed. Up until now, the head of a household has been
responsible for registering everyone who lives at an address.
However, since June 2014 people in England and Wales have needed to register as individuals.
In August 2014 we were able to move 86% of those registered voters in Herefordshire onto
the new register automatically after checking their details with the Department for Work and
Pensions. But for various reasons the remaining 14% of electors on the register did not match
and all now have to re-register to vote ahead of the General Election on May 7th 2015.
If you are one of those whose details did not match the information held by the Department
for Work and Pensions then you would have received a letter from the Elections Office at
Herefordshire Council asking you to register individually.
If you have received a letter asking you to register individually this means that you will need
to re-register in order to be able to vote by post in the May election.
If you have recently moved, you must register to vote at your new address. You are not
registered at a new property automatically, even if you pay council tax.
The simplest way to register is online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
or to call 01432 260107.

Our Church
The church was restored in 1867, 1875, 1882 and
1904. The restoration of 1867 was quite considerable
and undertaken with the superintendence of G. C.
Haddon, Esq., architect, of Hereford and Malvern.
The total cost of this work was then about £2,500 and
raised chiefly through the exertions of the Rev. Dr.
Heather. The installation of the John Nicholson organ
was completed in 1871. A quantity of oak removed
from the church during the 1867 restoration, now
panels the passage of the Crown Inn. Other parts form
the wood work of two cottage porches next to the old
shop.
In 1875 the tower was restored, and the bells re-hung, at a cost of £250. The exterior of the
chancel, and the south side of the church were also restored in 1882. In 1904 the organ was
restored at a cost of £300.
A clock was placed in the tower in 1887 to commemorate the Queen Victoria's jubilee. The
funds were raised by subscription. The war memorial was errected near the entrance gate in
1922. Also in 1922 the new burial ground was established opposite the east end of the church
and from 1923 all new internments took place in this ground. The new burial site was where
the old Tythe Barn once stood.
Inside the church, electric light replaced the old oil lamps in 1935. In 1943 the iron gates at
the front of the porch were requisitioned by the
then Ministry of Works for the war effort. The

Dilwyn YFC Report
On the 1st of February we sent three teams to St Weonards to compete in the Herefordshire
Young Farmers Hedging Match. The competition requires competitors to lay, pleach and
dress a hedge. This is a dying traditional countryside skill and it was great to have 7 of our
8 competitors learning this skill for the first time.
By mid February it was our time to shine and get back on stage after a 6 year break from
competing in the Herefordshire YFC pantomime competition. We all had a great time
performing on Sunday 15th at Weobley High School and on Tuesday 17th as part of the
HFYFC Panto Festival at Bishops High School. Dexter the Shetland and all at Dilwyn YFC
would like to thank everyone for their support towards our panto Robin Hood. We were
overwhelmed at how many people came to support us at Weobley, and it was fantastic to
see so many people from the village there too. We hope we provided you with a great
afternoon of entertainment- we certainly enjoyed ourselves! As a result of everyone's
generosity on our delicious cake stall we are proud to be donating £180 to the Children's
Cancer and Leukaemia Group.
Unfortunately we missed out on a place in the final at the HFYFC panto festival, however
we were ecstatic to have several nominations for best actors and actresses. Jack Hanson and
Ed Turner were nominated for best under 26 actors and Emily Horne and Rosie Williams
were nominated for best under 16 performance. On the finals night we were proud to be
awarded the trophy for Best Production Team and for Beth Hanson to be awarded with the
Page 32
Dilwynner - April 2015
trophy for the Best Under 26 Actress A huge thanks must go to Lyndsay Rogers, Oliver
Whittal and Alan Powell for their huge commitment to producing our pantomime. We hope
to be back on stage again next year with an even bigger and better performance! In the
meantime we will be trying to get Dexter a bit more house trained so he doesn't poo in the
Bishops High School Canteen again after his performance!!
On 1st March we had four teams from Dilwyn representing Herefordshire competing in the
West Midland Area Public Speaking Competition in Stafford. Dilwyn had a hugely successful
day winning both the Junior Reading and Junior Public Speaking Competition and coming
2nd in Intermediate Brainstrust. The Junior Reading team consisting of Emily Horne, Olivia
Lewis and Zoe Powell are now through to the National Reading Competition in June, whilst
The Junior Public Speakers and Brainstrust team go on to compete at the South National
Regional Final in Weston Super Mare.
Aside from competitions we've had some great fun over the past few weeks. On the 11th
March we visited Mark Hurds County Butchers in Weobley where he kindly demonstrated
his fantastic butchery skills and inspired several of our members. Mark cut up the lamb which
was very generously donated to the club by John Hanson and family. After the demonstration
we auctioned off the joints of lamb and raised £200 which is being donated to the West
Midlands Air Ambulance.
Dilwyn YFC
Weobley Theatre Goers
Our next trip is to see The King's Speech at Malvern on Wednesday 29 April. We shall be
leaving Bell Square, Weobley at 12.30 for the 2.30pm performance. Please ring as soon as
possible if you would still like to go to this production, which has had good reviews on its
tour. This will be the last of the early season's outings.
However, we shall start again in the autumn with the wonderfully uplifting show, Anything
Goes, at the Bristol Hippodrome on Thurs 8 October. This is sheer joyous, escapist fun! It
is a brand new production of Cole Porter's classic, multi-award winning musical comedy.
Songs include I Get a Kick out of You, You're The Top, It's De-lovely and Anything Goes.
Tickets are £46 each and we will leave Weobley, Bell Square, at 10.30am for the 2.30pm
performance. Please pay within two weeks or reserving tickets (as usual) before 6 August.
Seats are in the Circle in rows B, C and D.
And in November we shall be going to see something a little bit different - Les Ballets
Trockadero de Monte Carlo! This is a an all-male company, founded in 1974, who perform
at the Birmingham Hippodrome with a new programme of Swan Lake, Patterns in Space,
Esmerelda and Don Quixote. I have reserved seats for the 2.00pm matinee on Wednesday
11 November, leaving Bell Square, Weobley at 10.00, to allow a couple of hours before the
show to eat or look around the area. We have central seats in rows B and C in the circle, at
a cost of £48 to include the coach. Please pay before 20 April.
Remember: Anyone is welcome on these trips - there is no membership. Just come along
to any shows that take your fancy! There is no need to miss the wonderful opportunities of
top productions just because we 'live in the sticks'!

Royal British Legion Annual Draw
The R.B.L. Annual Draw took place at the Crown Inn on 24th February 2015. £1,082 of
tickets were sold for the event and after all costs £952 is now reserved to purpose.
I would like to express my thanks to Pamela Taylor, Debra Wright, Gill Thomas and everyone
else who donated their time and energy to organise the event.
It is not our policy to hold onto excessive reserves of funds and when significant funds above
and beyond the ongoing requirements of our ordinary activities are accrued we make
donations on a one-off basis. If anyone comes across a suitable cause/institution/effort that
would materially benefit from a substantial contribution like the previous ones we have made,
please notify a Committee member for inclusion for consideration at the next A.G.M..
Harvey Beach, Assistant Treasurer
The British Legion committee would like to thank all those who supported the annual Draw
- for donating prizes, selling and buying draw tickets and coming along on the evening of
the Draw at The Crown. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening with lots of laughter and
good humour.
As you know we collect prizes in December. Prizes are then allocated to the Whist Drive
and then all remaining prizes are kept for the Grand Draw in February. The first prize is
always donated by the British Legion.
The Draw is always a very successful fundraiser and this together with the Whist Drive are
the only fund raisers in the year for the British Legion.
Thank you all once again.
2014 Poppy Appeal
Once again, you, together with the Parishes of Eardisland and Monkland joined together to
raise a total of £1983 for the 2014 Poppy Appeal.
This was slightly down on the record total £2200 raised in 2012 but Members of Dilwyn
R.B.L. wish to thank everyone who gave so generously to the Poppy Appeal.
Thanks also to Dawn Hussey our P.O.A. and all collectors who continue to call at every
household, sometimes more than once, in all kinds of weather.
