The Visa Interview
• An in-person visa interview is required for all NEW F-1 applicants.
• The interview is often times less than 5 minutes.
• Expect that the interview will be conducted in English.
• Do not rehearse answers. Your answers are more believable if you can
speak candidly. Be honest!
• The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa. It is your responsibility to show:
1. Strong ties to your home country
2. How will you apply your education in your home country
3. How you are going to pay for your education and living expenses in
the United States

Tips for the Visa Interview
1. Strong ties to your home country
• “ties” are the relationships that bind you to your home country
• Examples: you or your family members own property, there is a job
waiting for you upon return, family members will remain home,
family members have not immigrated to the US
2. How will you apply your education in your home country
• Show that you know the job market at HOME
• Show that you have discussed with academic advisors how you are
going to use your U.S. education in your home country
3. How you are going to pay for your education and living expenses in
the United States
• Show that you are aware of the length of time it will take to
complete your degree
• If you indicate that you intend to work to pay for your expenses in
the US, you could have your visa denied

How to Release your
SEVIS Record

How to transfer your SEVIS record
If you currently have an F-1 visa from another school, you will
need to request your school to transfer your SEVIS record to Cal
State Fullerton.
They may ask to see:
• Your CSUF admission letter.
• The Cal State Fullerton school code: LOS214F00210000
CSUF will be able to issue your I-20 after your school transfers
your SEVIS record.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When will I get my I-20?
A: CSUF will not be able to issue you a new I-20, until your current school has
released your SEVIS record. This often occurs at the end of the term. Do not
expect to receive a new I-20, until your current school has released your SEVIS
record.
Q: I am going home, and I need my new I-20 as soon as possible!
A: You must re-enter the country with your CSUF I-20. Notify us if you plan to
travel. If we cannot issue your I-20 prior to you leaving the country, your I-20 can
be mailed to an overseas address.
Q: Do I need a new visa now that I will transfer to a new school?
A: If you have a valid F-1 or J-1 visa stamp, you do not need to go to the US
Embassy to obtain a new visa, even though the school indicated on the visa page
is a different school.
Q: I think I am out of status, can I still get my I-20?
A: You should schedule an appointment with the CSUF Immigration Advisor as
soon as possible.
