Moosehead Lake Region to announce new “brand”
GREENVILLE - The Moosehead Lake Region Branding Initiative Committee recently announced that
it will present the region’s new brand direction at an open-to-the-public presentation on April 10 at 9 a.m.
at Greenville Consolidated School. The brand direction is the result of nearly seven months of research
and work by the branding committee to identify, define and brand what makes the region unique and can
define its prosperous future.
“Successful regions have a focus that helps set them apart from every other area, and that brand – or
what we promise to deliver to residents and guests from near and far – is what the Moosehead Region
needs to create and perpetuate,” said Amanda Hunt, branding committee member. “Input from the community provided the direction, the branding committee researched the competition and opportunities
and, together with experts, we are mapping a new course for our success.”
The branding committee, which was selected by the Moosehead Lake Region Economic Development
Corporation (MLREDC), began working with community branding and marketing consultant Roger
Brooks International (RBI) in fall 2014 to launch the locally driven initiative. During the April 10 public
meeting, the branding committee and Brooks will unveil the new brand direction and emphasize the role
everyone plays in carrying it through. The April 10 public unveiling is the culmination of a week of meetings by the committee and Brooks to finalize the brand direction, preliminary logo and tagline, and other
efforts.
“We are already a top seasonal destination in the state and region, but we want to be and can be one of
the best year-round state and regional destinations,” said John Simko, town manager of Greenville. “We
want to establish a renewed sense of place for the Moosehead Lake Region to both attract new visitors
2015 and to encourage business investment to help drive economic growth.”
According to Hunt, the branding initiative committee is pleased
with the interest and involvement from those around the state and
region who participated in sharing their thoughts and providing direction. An online survey had more than 1,400 respondents and hundreds of others attended community meetings and focus groups.
Following the April 10 brand direction unveiling, Roger Brooks InControl your hearing
ternational will create and provide a strategic Branding and Marketexperiences with Halo™,
ing Action Plan that will help the region’s businesses implement the
new brand. In addition, a new Brand Leadership Team will be sethe breakthrough Made for

The Moosehead Lake Region
has historically been known for
its unique character and natural resources and gets its name
from its most significant water
resource – Moosehead Lake. Located at the entrance to Maine’s
historic North Woods, Moosehead
Lake is a 75,000-acre lake peppered with more than 80 islands
and surrounded by vast working forests and scenic mountain
ranges. Since 1998, more than
400,000 acres of land has been
permanently conserved, connecting the Region to a conservation
corridor of nearly two million
acres of permanently conserved
woods, waters and mountains
running from the Canada border
to Baxter State Park.
Now in its second year of operation, the MLREDC is working to
establish collaborative partnerships with significant regional
and statewide stakeholders. Discussions have been held with Appalachian Mountain Club, Maine
Huts and Trails, Forest Society of
Maine, Town of Greenville, Plum
Creek, Northern Forest Canoe
Trail, The Nature Conservancy,
the State of Maine Office of Tourism and others.

Mudseason 2015 on April 11
MONSON - Mudseason 2015
is a community arts celebration
centered around clay. Its a project where local potters, artists,
art students and enthusiasts,
mostly from the community of
Piscataquis County, pool their
artistic know-how to make 60
beautiful hand-crafted bowls, all
for a good cause. These unique
bowls are distributed to ticket
holders of the Mudseason Supper which will take place April
11 at 6 p.m. at the UU Church.
Jason Curran will entertain with
live piano jazz during the supper, which will include a variety
of handmade soups (including a
vegan choice), breads and desserts. For more information regarding $25 tickets, call Theresa
Boettner on 564-8666.
The money raised from the
project will go towards paying
for the restoration of four historic storied stained glass windows
at the Unitarian Universalist
Church of Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft.
The first Mudseason Event in
Piscataquis County occurred in
2007 and was sponsored by Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts
who taught Jemma Gascoine
how to organize and facilitate
Mudseason workshops and the
celebration event. Gascoine partnered with the Maine Highlands
Guild and the Center Theatre to
host the 2007 event, enlisting
help from local artists too. The
second Mudseason was in 2013
and was at the Monson Community Center and was sponsored
by local Monson businesses and
benefited Monson’s food cupboard. Mudseason 15 is the third
Mudseason in Piscataquis County and this time it is for the UU
Church, who help fund some important welfare programs such
as the food cupboard and the fuel
assistance program.
Most of the pots for Mudseason have been thrown at the new
Monson Pottery Workshop at the
Monson Community Center. Potters Jemma Gascoine and Lyn
Black who have been throwing
clay on the potter’s wheel for
fifteen years and ten years respectively, opened the workshop
at the beginning of February.
They are building up inventory
for craft fairs and shops. Gascoine, who has ten years experience teaching, is teaching private classes at the workshop.
They are renting out the pottery
wheels at the studio on a monthly basis. They are open Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. - 4
p.m. Call ahead on 370-7099.

Opinion:
Maine Should Reject a New National Park
by Anne Mitchell
When President Obama appointed Roxanne Quimby to the National Park Foundation Board of Directors in 2010, the NPF press release on Ms. Quimby, said that
she “bought and conserved approximately 120,000 acres of wild lands in Maine at
risk of or already damaged by logging for timber.” This clearly states her opinion on
the forest products industry.
Early efforts to rally support for a national park in Maine touted conservation,
preservation and protection of these lands for future generations of Mainers. However, Quimby’s disdain for the traditional uses of hunting, fishing and cutting timber was demonstrated when she blocked timber roads and posted her land. Mainers
were so outraged that Quimby withdrew herself and that plan, and soon presented
son, Lucas St. Clair, as the new face for the park campaign. The sales pitch became
“It’s for the economy” of the area.
St. Clair has been promoting the results of a study commissioned and paid for by
his mother’s Elliotsville Plantation, Inc., which attempts to minimize any negative
impact on the logging industry by declaring the industry is nearly dead anyway.
While promising potential creation of higher wage jobs in the tourism and travel
sectors and increases in non-labor sources of income, the Quimby report suggests
that the relatively small number of logging jobs will hardly be missed when the
park opens.
Next we have a list of businesses supposedly supporting the park and not a single
forest products related business is on that list. Plenty of cafes, hair salons, a funeral
home and a surf shop signed up, but conspicuously absent are the Maine Guides,
loggers, and others who actually make their living in the Maine woods. Would anyone who makes a living in the woods dare hand it over to the Federal government
to manage?
The federal government’s track record in America’s West enables us to see what a
national park would mean for Maine’s forest products industry. The federal government’s Northwest Forest Plan to manage 25 million acres of federal forests in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, resulted in an 80% reduction in allowable
timber harvest! The increase in disease and resulting forest fires left to burn is
something Mainers should be prepared for with federal control.
Quimby is on the National Park Board. David Shaw, founder of Idexx Laboratories, was also appointed to the Board in 2010. Make no mistake: Maine has been
targeted for a National Park. The plan is in place. Maine people need to prepare
legal, preventative measures necessary to reassert citizen sovereignty over Maine
lands that are under the real threat of being subject to a federal land transfer in the
very near future. Remember, Ms. Quimby once declared her goal of making a gift to
the National Park system on the occasion of their 100th birthday in 2016.
Anne Mitchell is Chair of the Maine Woods Coalition, organized in 2000 to fight
RESTORE’s plan for a 3.2 million acre federal park. www.mainewoodscoalition.org

“In reponse to the opinion...”
To the Editor:
In response to the opinion in last weeks Eastern Gazette by Dale Landrith, I do
agree that life is 10 percent what happens and 90 percent how you respond to it or in
other words life is what you make it. I do however disagree that much of society today
is teaching that people are owed something. If anything it is teaching inequality is
acceptable, that it is okay for 10 percent to have 90 percent of the wealth. That it is
okay for Wall Street and banks to tell the government to bail them out and then tell
the government they can’t be in debt and they need to cut jobs and programs to bring
them out of debt when it was they who put them in debt with their huge bailouts. It is
not acceptable for college grads to start their lives off in a huge amount of debt. Fundamental inequality is a threat to society when it becomes so top heavy it will collapse.
So to the new graduates I say to you take steps to change the system. Be a part of
America that works to improve things not the part that does nothing and allows the
American dream to be swallowed up by greed. We all need to work toward democracy
so that we can all pursue good health, happiness and justice for all not only the elite

Three Rivers Kiwanis welcomes guest
MILO/BROWNVILLE - Three Rivers Kiwanis members welcomed New England Kiwanis Division 2
Lieutenant Governor Larry Wade to their March 25 meeting at the Kiwanis Building in Milo. Lt Governor
Wade makes at least one official visit per year to each of the clubs in Division 2. He told the club how he
loves coming to the Milo-Brownville community, to the Three Rivers club, and to the new Kiwanis building. He shared his appreciation for how Three Rivers shares the building with the community; how proud
he is of TRK, who is a big supporter of Project Eliminate, the global campaign for children, uniting with
UNICEF to eliminate maternal/ neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the earth, and informed them that their
division has 100 percent participation. He remarked the TRK Veteran’s Dinner each November 11 is a
really good way to get young kids involved in community service.
There was a short video about Wil Blechman, past president of Kiwanis International, who was instrumental in developing the organization’s ongoing worldwide program, Young Children: Priority One, which
focuses on children from before birth through age 5. “The way we end up as adults is largely a manifestation of what happens in the first five years of life,” Blechman said. The impact of The Eliminate Project
and a worldwide project with UNICEF to increase iodine intake for small children has been far reaching
and phenomenal. Lt Governor Wade proudly told us his wife, Deanna Wade, is a participant in the EMMC
Cuddlers Group, which is a critical aspect of care for newborns.

creased their inventory of shabby

demands, so renting can give you
access to greater variety. Plus,
you'll reap the cost savings of
renting versus buying.
3. Layers of texture.
The pleasing union of diverse
colors and textures is at the
heart of a shabby chic wedding.
Soft colors are the perfect foil for
sparkles, and distressed wood
complements the beauty of aged
metals like silver and pewter. All
these elements come together to
evoke the grace and comfort of
bygone times. Look for creative
ways to harmoniously incorporate these touches into your wedding. For example, display your
wedding cake, adorned with real
flowers, atop a rustic wooden
table. Decorate an antique metal
birdcage with lace and ribbon
and use it as a holder where reception guests can deposit cards
for the bride and groom. Add petite crystal and pearl accents to
bouquets and centerpieces. For
a rustic food table, rent wooden
barrels, top with an aged wooden
plank, and present food on vintage serving plates.
Finally, look for inspiration
online. Resources like Pinterest,
Etsy and theknot yield a wealth
of ideas, and you can browse photos of other weddings and bridal
creations to find the perfect look
for your shabby chic wedding.

their inventory of shabby
chic items, it's also one of
the easiest and most fun
wedding themes to create.
Vintage wedding gowns,
repurposed items and a
wide inventory of thematic
rental items can all work
together to create a shabby
chic wedding that is unique,
memorable and affordable.
You can visit RentalHQ.com
to find your local American
Rental Association member store that will help you
with your individual needs.
To create a wedding theme
that is the perfect marriage
of shabby and glam follow
these three simple steps:
1. Flowers and lace are
the perfect marriage.
Lace isn't just for your
wedding gown and flowers
aren't just for your bouquet.
Touches of lace added throughout the ceremony and reception
underscore the air of nostalgic elegance that's essential to shabby
chic. This can be as easy as adding lace touches to wedding invitations or using pieces of lace as
placemats or coasters on reception tables. Or, it can be as grand
as a lace tent liner that evokes
a romantic, bygone era. Florals
are key to creating a shabby
chic look. Whether the bride and
groom stand beneath a bower of
pastel blooms while exchanging
vows, or floral accents throughout the bride's couture, flowers
and floral patterns lend romance
and grace to every aspect of a
shabby chic wedding.
2. Light the way.
Light plays an important role
in any shabby chic themed event.
For weddings, vintage-looking
chandeliers, candelabras and
hurricane lamps act both as
decorative items and sources of
romantic light. It's easy to add
thematic lighting to any wedding, even if your reception will
be in an ordinary hall or tent.
Rental companies offer an array of lighting options that can
be temporarily outfitted to any
venue. Adorn tables with classic
silver candelabra or add a stunning crystal chandelier to an outdoor tent. You can find a variety
of lighting options on RentalHQ.

Money-saving wedding-planning tips for any budget
(BPT) - Weddings can be expensive, and most brides and
grooms need to establish a budget before they start planning
the wedding so they can afford
to get hitched. Many couples
are now getting married later
in life and paying most or all of
the costs themselves, so it's important to start budgeting sooner
than later.
The following tips will help you
and your fiance keep your costs
down so you can stay within your
wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when
you say "Yes" to the second you
say "I do."
1. Set a long engagement There are two benefits to having
an engagement of a year or longer. First, it allows you to spread
costs over several paychecks.
For example, if you get engaged
this spring, you can choose one
month to put a down payment
on the reception hall, and another month for purchasing the
wedding dress and renting the
tuxedo. A third month could be
used for purchasing honeymoon
trip tickets, and a fourth month
for the photographer's down pay-
ment. During your engagement
you can also start putting money
into a savings account so you
aren't strapped for cash immediately following your wedding.
The second reason a long engagement makes financial sense
is that many couples will set a
seasonal theme for their weddings, wanting to decorate the
wedding and reception hall in
that theme. The best time to
purchase decorations and supplies for seasonal events is immediately following those events,
because stores discount them
when it's time to get them off the
shelves. If you are planning a fall
theme, for example, keep an eye
on the shelves for these kinds of
discounted decorations right after Thanksgiving or Halloween.
Longer engagements allow couples to take advantage of a these
seasonal discounts at least once,
if not twice.
2. Combine your resources
- A couple living in the same
household can save hundreds
of dollars monthly by combining expenses related to rent/
mortgage, utilities, groceries and
even transportation. If you re-
cently became engaged and are
considering moving in together,
calculate how much money you'll
be saving so you can apply those
savings toward your wedding
budget.
During the moving process,
you can save additional money.
For example, when you combine
your households, will you need
two sets of dishes and furniture?
Probably not. Perhaps you can
even host a garage sale to sell
the items you don't need duplicates of; then you can put that
money toward a wedding-related
item. As you plan your big move,
be sure to check out great moving services like Penske Truck
Rental, which offers AAA and
other great discounts to help
soon-to-be newlyweds save money on moving costs.
3. Find the best deals - If
you've always dreamed of getting married under a tent at a
local park, you might discover
that tent rental far exceeds your
budget - especially if you live in
an urban setting. This is where
the Internet can be very helpful. Sometimes it's cheaper to

Domestic bliss: 5 fabulous wedding registry upgrades
(BPT) - Getting ready to say "I
do?" Of all the tasks you'll do to
prepare for your big day, creating
your wedding registry will be one
of the most fun. It's your chance
to choose everything for your
home, from towels and linens to
plates, flatware and kitchen gadgets. Be sure to add choices in a
variety of price ranges so guests
can decide how much they want
to spend, while still getting you
and your new spouse something
you really want. Dream big - in
addition to the basics, take this
opportunity to ask for premium
gifts. Here are a few items any
couple would be thrilled to receive and enjoy.
Mixing up magic
A high-performance blender is
a must-have for any newly married couple or family. Ask for one
that can help with every meal of
the day, such as the Vitamix S55.
With a smaller footprint than
conventional blenders, this powerful machine offers the convenience of four pre-programmed
settings and two container options, including a blend-and-go
smoothie cup. Use the S55 to
make breakfast smoothies in
the morning, salad dressing for
lunch, soup for dinner, and even
dips and drinks for last-minute
entertaining.
Multi- taskers
Pots and pans are a registry
staple, but you should also add
specialty cookware and bakeware, such as a roasting pan,
rectangular baker or covered
baking dish. Choosing oven-totable pieces makes it easy to go
straight from cooking to presentation, all in one dish that works
for both tasks. Many of these
dishes also include lids for easily
storing leftovers. By asking for
a set that comes with multiple
pieces, you'll be ready to create
brunch casseroles, lasagna for
dinner and a warm bread pudding for dessert.
Backyard barbecues
An outdoor grill can help set
the scene for family gatherings,
tailgate parties or just relaxing
with friends. Decide if you prefer
gas, which offers easy operation
and clean-up, or charcoal, which
many barbecue connoisseurs say
provides a more intense, grilled
flavor. Also, think about extra
features you may want, such
as a built-in thermometer, side
burners, shelves or tool hooks.
Don't forget skewers, cooking
utensils such as spatulas, tongs
and grill forks, as well as other
accessories like a grill mitt, grill
basket or pizza pan. Be sure to
consider space as well. If you live
in an apartment, you may opt for
a smaller grill or one that hooks
directly on your balcony.
Serve in style
Be ready for dinner parties
with formal dinnerware and
crystal stemware. Select timeless patterns that will look fresh
and inviting on your table for
years to come. Add a pop of color
and personality with low-cost,
on-trend accent pieces, such as
chargers or a coffee or tea pot.
Register for a few different types
of glasses including water goblets, wine glasses and stemless
or highball glasses, depending
on your drink of choice. Experts
recommend requesting eight to
12 place settings, but you may
want more if you plan to host
large events.
Unconventional tools
Once you've got the basics covered, consider some out-of-thebox kitchen items. Keep recipes
handy by registering for a cutting board that has place for a
tablet. For easy entertaining, a
slate cheese board enables you to
write the name of each cheese or
appetizer right on the board. Or,

Friends and family often like
to give a signature gift that will
make you think of them each
time you use it. If you need extra advice on what to choose for
your registry, don't hesitate to
ask a consultant at your local
department store or download
checklists from popular wedding
websites and blogs. Creating a

Tankless Water
Heaters
You don’t use hot water 24 hours a day, but with
a standard water heater, you heat and reheat the
same water - even when you’re sleeping.
The Rinnai tankless water heater is a more efficient way
to heat quickly and will deliver an endless supply of hot
water for as long as you need it. With the Rinnai tankless
water heater, you only pay to heat water when you need
it! Produce and supply endless streams of hot water to
multiple outlets simultaneously without any fluctuation
in temperature.
• Up to 50 percent more energy efficient than traditional
gas water heaters - up to 70 percent more efficient
than an electric water heater
• Shut-off automatically when the water supply is closed,
providing significant energy savings
• Compact wall mounted units with a life expectancy of
25 years.
Rinnai Energy
Efficient
Space Heaters
Enjoy comfortable heat anywhere all winter
long. Rinnai heaters are efficient and easy
to install. And the innovative cool-to-thetouch cabinet makes it safe for the whole
family.
Rinnai’s ductless heaters are among the
quietest operating on the market. Efficient
fans offer exceptional air flow at very low
decibels, a little louder than a whisper (3147 dBA).
