Professor Audra Bowlus Reappointed Chair Congratulations to Professor Audra Bowlus on her appointment to a second term as Chair of Economics at Western. Audra will take a well-deserved Study Leave in 2015-2016, returning in July, 2016. Her fouryear term ends July, 2019. Professor Tim Conley 2015-2017 Faculty Scholar Congratulations are extended to Professor Tim Conley, who has been named a 2015-2017 Social Science Faculty Scholar. The award recognizes the complete scholar who has maintained an excellent record in research and teaching, and who has achieved prominence recently in one of these two domains. In 2014, Conley was awarded the William G. Davis Chair in International Trade. Reminder – Baby Shower for Nirav Mehta & Rachel Margolis Nirav and Rachel’s baby shower takes place Tuesday, April 14, at 2:40 p.m., in the Faculty Lounge. Coffee, tea and cake will be served. Please see your invitation for details. Grimes Faculty Fellowship in Microeconomic Theory Applications or nominations are invited for The Christopher J. Grimes Faculty Fellowship in Microeconomic Theory. Please submit them, along with a current CV, to Professor Audra Bowlus, Grimes Faculty Fellowship Selection Committee, Western Economics by Friday, April 10, 2015. Western Law’s Business and Law Lecture – Myron S. Scholes Myron S. Scholes, co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Economics, will deliver Western Law’s Annual Business and Law Lecture on The Costs of Constraints: Risk Management, Agency Theory and Asset Prices. This free lecture takes place Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at 12:30-2:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room of the Josephine Spencer Niblett Law Building (LB). Applied Mathematics Colloquium Peter Streufert will talk on Specifying Nodes as Sets of Choices at the Applied Mathematics Colloquium on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Room 204, Middlesex College. All are welcome to attend. Teaching Support Centre – Upcoming Event This year’s Spring Perspectives on Teaching Conference, Realizing the University of the Future: An Institution-wide Approach to Pedagogical Change, will take place on May 13, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Room 2050, Social Science Centre Room. The conference is free, but registration is required. WALS (Western Active Learning Space) for Summer Courses The Teaching Support Centre is currently accepting applications to teach in WALS (Western Active Learning Space) for the 2015 Spring, Summer, and Intersession terms. WALS is a collaborative, technology-enhanced active learning space. WALS is open for booking by full- and part-time faculty members in any department or unit. The Undergraduate Awards (UA) – International Competition for Top Coursework Faculty members are asked to promote The Undergraduate Awards to eligible students. The UA is an international competition that recognizes top undergraduate scholars through their coursework. See Julie McMullin’s memorandum for further details. 2 Western Heads East – International Internship Opportunities Western Heads East, a collaboration between Western staff, students, faculty and African partners using probiotic food to contribute to health and sustainable development, has a number of internship positions available for senior undergraduate and graduate students. The application deadline is March 30, 2015. Please share this information with students who may be interested. Western's Annual Campus Clean-up Western students, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in Western's Annual Campus Clean-up on Thursday, April 2, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., or 12:30 p.m. There will be a free BBQ lunch after each cleanup session. If interested, RSVP indicating your preferred timeslot. The clean-up meeting point will be on the concrete beach (sunshine) or in the Mustang Lounge (rain). Stony Brook Summer Festival on Game Theory – Call for Papers The Stony Brook Center for Game Theory will hold the 26th International Conference on Game Theory on July 20-24, 2015, in Stony Brook, NY. The conference will be followed by the Workshop on Stochastic Games, Communication and Strategic Complexity, July 26-28, and the Workshop on Political Economy, July 29-31, 2015. The submission deadline is April 15, 2015 for the Conference, and April 24, 2015 for the Workshops. Research Notices There are no research notices this week. Information about research funding can be found on the Intranet. Please contact Karin if you have any questions about research grants. Research Grant Applications – Department Procedures Please submit a paper copy or email a pdf of all research grant applications (including contracts), internal and external, to Karin for review and subsequent Chair approval/signature prior to submitting your application electronically. In addition, completion of the Faculty Facesheet and electronic submission of proposals via ROLA are required by all applicants in order to obtain institutional approvals for research grant/contract applications.
