Building Better Opportunities
£220m from Big Lottery Fund with a similar figure from the European
Social Fund for projects across England that tackle poverty and promote
social inclusion
Berkshire Priorities:
The Big Lottery Fund have now published further details for the first tranche of Building
Better Opportunities Funding (BBO).
Priorities and funds for Berkshire:
Addressing Barriers to Work £1,706,250
In urban and rural areas where there are high levels of deprivation and social exclusion.
Activities – supporting people at a disadvantage in the labour market to access employment
or training to gain employment – those who lack literacy and numeracy skills, ethnic
minorities, refugees, disabled people.
Supporting families with complex needs £1,137,500
For those that are ineligible for support under national Troubled families programme but
have issues such as intergenerational unemployment, criminal & antisocial behaviour, poor
school attendance and other chaotic lifestyle issues.
Encouraging and developing social entrepreneurs £568,750
To support the setup of new enterprise including support with business planning,
understanding different business models, developing sustainability and autonomy and
accessing support.
BBO – Berkshire Update:
Fifty organisations from across Berkshire came together on the 21st April to talk about
Building Better Opportunities [BBO] and to meet potential bidding partners for each of the 3
priorities for Berkshire.
The Big Lottery plan to open for first stage applications in early June and will select one
partnership for each priority.

BBO – Eligibility:
The Building Better Opportunities Fund is for projects delivering against the ‘Promoting
Social Inclusion and Combating Poverty’ part of the European Social Fund [ESF]. The ESF is
being matched by the Big Lottery Fund who will be managing the application process and
grant monitoring. The first stage of the application process is expected to open in June
2015.
Local bids will need to address the Thames Valley Berkshire LEP priorities outlined further
below and provide support in accordance with the eligibility criteria [this could
