Pasture Cropping Workshop
Pasture Cropping Workshop
Wed 25 March 2015 @ Nareen
with Colin Seis
Combining cropping and grazing into a profitable and
ecological land management system
What is pasture cropping?
Who is Colin Seis?
‘Pasture cropping’ is an innovative land management technique
that enables annual crops to be sown directly into perennial
pastures whose competitive capacity has been repressed by
grazing and/or selective herbicides. ‘Pasture cropping’ thereby
maintains living plant cover on the soil that:
 enhances soil biological health,
 increases nutrient cycling,
 improves soil structure and water use efficiency
 reduces soil erosion.
Colin is a pioneer and champion of ‘pasture cropping’ in
Australia. He owns ‘Winona’ a 840 Ha property near
Gulgong in NSW where he runs fine wool Merinos and 200
ha of oats, wheat and cereal rye.
Paddocks can be grazed until the crop is sown, strategically
during winter, and following grain harvest. Although the yield
from a grain crop may be lower than traditionally sown crops, the
real gains from ‘pasture cropping’ are greater profitability and
reduced risk as the input and labour costs are very low.

Colin was the winner of the 2014 Bob Hawke Landcare
Award and the 2007 Carbon Farmer of the Year Award. The
Weekly Times (Jan 2015) suggested Colin is a visionary and
one of the most influential farmers in the world.
Come and find out WHY?
The workshop includes a farm walk to look at a nearby
pasture cropping demonstration site.
A system of ‘multi species pasture cropping’ is now being
developed with the aim of further improving forage quality and
soil health even more than single species pasture cropping.
