Any 4-H’er who has ATTENDED LEADERSHIP LAB AT LEAST ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THIS YEAR is eligible to seek an office. Qualified delegates interested in seeking Council office must apply by completing the application on the District 10 Website starting May 4, 2015 and Submitting no later than MAY 31, 2015. Application can be found at http://d104-h.tamu.edu/district-4-h-council/. Applications will be accepted online only and it is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure their application was received. Candidates will participate in a question/answer session in front of the voting delegates following speeches. Candidates will be sent a list of potential questions in May. Each candidate will be asked 2 questions from the list and one question that is not on the list. This will provide an opportunity for the voting delegates to see how well candidates think on their feet. Candidates who apply will be allowed to bring ONE poster board size (22 inches X 28 inches) campaign poster to Lab! No other campaign materials will be allowed, i.e. candy, flyers, gum, etc. DISTRICT 10 4-H LEADERSHIP LAB REQUIRED WORKSHOPS/TRAINING FOR DISTRICT OFFICERS NOTE: Registration is limited to the first 100 youth who register, so register as soon as possible!!! When: June 24-26, 2015 Where: T Bar M Resort & Conference Center in New Braunfels, TX Cost: $235.00 (NOTE: Gillespie 4-H Adult Leaders will pay half of this cost, cost to participants is $118.00). Please enter “4H Check” as your payment option and then bring $118.00 check to Extension Office. All participants must be at least 13 years of age by the date of the Leadership Lab. No graduating seniors who are ineligible to participate in 4-H for the 2015-2016 4-H year may attend. Current officers who are graduating are allowed to attend. Registration will be conducted on 4-H Connect May 4 - June 1, 2015. NO LATE REGISTRATION will be available so please plan ahead. Important notice: Due to the room availability, registration will be limited to the first 100 District 10 registrations submitted. The District Council President, 1 Vice-President and Delegate-atLarge also serve as members of the Texas 4-H Council and must st th be 16 years of age and not reached their 19 birthday on or before August 31, 2015. We will learn more about and practice shooting in Manual Mode. Anyone is welcome to come but it is a bit more of an advanced topic and you will need a camera that you can change the settings for shutter speed, f-stop (aperture), and ISO if you want to practice with us. May 29th: Deadline to enter the Texas Association of Extension 4-H Agents photography contest. See the announcement later in this newsletter or check the announcement in weekly email blasts. And, for the parents that have been learning with us this year there is even a division for adults to enter. June 29th - July 1: tentative dates for a photography camp at the extension office 3 May 2015 TEXAS A&M AGRILIFE EXTENSION – GILLESPIE COUNTY IS ON FACEBOOK We have finally caught up with the times, and we now have a Facebook page for the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension – Gillespie County. 4-H is housed out of the Gillespie County Extension Office, so please like and share our page for tips and notices regarding Ag-related programs, health tips, safety hints, and 4-H related information. Visit and “like” our page now!!! WHAT IS A PROJECT RECORD FORM? One of the 4H mottos is “Learn By Doing”, and project record forms are a way to teach 4H’ers about the preparation, process, and conclusion of a project. This activity asks 4H’ers of any age about the goals, planning, costs, profits, record keeping, and results of a project. There are separate forms for a project involving animals and one for non-animal projects. Projects do not have to be completed in the 4H setting. Projects can consist of tending a home garden, taking photographs, raising an animal, judging, fashion show, food & nutrition, acting, public speaking, etc… (the possibilities are endless!!!). Those who submit a th project record form by the June 19 deadline will receive a project pin at the annual 4H banquet in July. Only one project pin can be received each year. Forms must be signed by a club manager, so you might want to bring a completed form to your next club meeting. To apply for a gold star award, one must complete a recordbook, submit a gold star application form, and meet all other award requirements. ELECTION OF CLUB OFFICERS Each club will need hold elections at a club meeting in the near future. Clubs need to follow their own bylaws for electing officers and which positions are filled. If you want to take a look at what is expected of each club officer, descriptions of each position are available on our website: http://gillespie.agrilife.org > Club Manager Resources. QUALIFICATIONS OF CLUB MANAGERS Clubs will also need to decide who will serve as club managers for each club. Managers normally serve for two years with one manager rotating off each year. The more experienced manager normally serves as the leader. Club managers provide leadership to the club officers to plan and conduct monthly meetings and serve as a liaison between the county Extension Office and each club. HORSE PROJECT 2015 HORSE VALIDATION WHAT IS A RECORDBOOK? 4-H record books are a tool in learning record keeping skills that will last a lifetime. In the 4-H record book, 4-H members record information about participation and accomplishments in all 4-H projects and activities. There are many categories in which to enter a 4-H record book; from beef to breads; from fashion to foods; from poultry to public speaking. 4H members will also receive a project pin in the category that they choose to do a recordbook in. Those who complete recordbooks are much more prepared to apply for 4H scholarships their senior year of high school. WHAT IS THE SILVER STAR AWARD? WHAT IS THE GOLD STAR AWARD? th th th The silver star award is the highest award that a 6 , 7 , or 8 grader can receive, and the gold star award is the highest award that a senior level 4H’er can receive. Both awards can only be received one time throughout a 4H career. To apply for a silver star award, one must submit a silver star award application, a one-page 4H story, a project form or recordbook, and must have been enrolled in 4H for at least two years. All horses must be validated or re-validated with payment each year to be eligible to show at District and State Horse Shows. st 2015 Horse Validation will open on 4-H Connect on March 1 and st will end on May 1 . However, the cost increases to $20.00 per th horse after April 15 , so you will definitely want to complete the th process before April 15 . The cost is $10.00 per horse before th April 15 . DISTRICT HORSE SHOW Date: June 16-17, 2015 Location: Uvalde, TX Registration Deadline is May 22, 2015 on 4-H Connect (http://texas.4honline.com) The District Horse Show is open to any 4-H member who has validated their horse in the current 4-H year. The District Horse Show includes all qualifying events. In order for a 4-H member to advance to State in a division, the 4-H member must compete in at least one class in that division at the District Horse Show. There are no open classes offered at the District 10 4-H Horse Show. A futurity project horse must be shown at District in order to qualify for a futurity division at the State Show. 4 May 2015 GILLESPIE COUNTY YOUTH LIVESTOCK SHOW CHECKS STATE 4-H HORSE SHOW th th When: Saturday, July 18 – Saturday, July 25 Rules and regulations and show schedule can be found on our website http://gillespie.agrilife.org > 4-H > Livestock > Horse. We have received the premium checks for 4-H exhibitors who showed during the GCYLS. To pick up your check, you will need to complete your thank you notes. If you are sending someone in your place to pick up checks, we will need a written statement signed by a parent authorizing someone other than the exhibitor to pick up your stock show check. LIVESTOCK UPDATES LIVESTOCK PROJECTS If you want for Brad Roeder or Micah Walker to come and look at your livestock projects, call the Extension Office and set up an appointment. STOCK SHOW CHECKS Ft. Worth, Kerrville, San Antonio floor, premium, and prize money, Houston floor, Rodeo Austin auction & floor, and San Angelo premium prize money checks have arrived to the Extension Office. NOTE: We do not have San Angelo premium sale checks. San Angelo premium sale checks will be mailed directly to your home address at a later date. If you are required to write a thank you note for any of these shows, the thank you list was mailed to you. Please pick up checks at your earliest convenience. 2016 SHOW TURKEY ORDERS We just wanted to give you a heads up that show turkey orders will likely be due sometime in early June. TAMU Poultry Department had not released the turkey ordering information to us by the time of production of this newsletter, but we wanted to give you a heads up to look for an announcement in the upcoming email blasts for the turkey order deadline. MARKET POULTRY WORKSHOP th May 9 , 2015 TAMU College Station @ the Pearce Pavilion 8:00am – 3:00pm $50.00 / person or family Learn about raising show poultry, selection and showing your birds, learn from the experts and ask questions, and hear from the judges themselves what they are looking for. This workshop provides an excellent opportunity to hear from the experts and work alongside Texas’ major poultry judges. Educational activities include in-depth discussion on brooding, management, sanitation and feeding programs and selection and processing methods for broilers, turkeys, and roasters. GILLESPIE COUNTY YOUTH LIVESTOCK SHOW BUYERS LISTS – THANK YOU NOTES & CHECKS Buyer’s lists and checks from the 2015 Gillespie County Youth Livestock Show are now available. All 4H members who sold an animal at the GCYLS auction will need to write thank you’s to their buyers. You can get a copy of your buyer’s lists in one of two ways. 1) Come by the Extension Office in Fredericksburg and pick up a copy 2) Contact Carly Jenkins, and she can e-mail a scanned copy to you What do I need to do once I pick up my buyer’s list? Write a thank you note to each buyer on your list (unless it has been crossed out by hand). Notes need to be hand-written. 2) Bring completed thank you notes in unsealed, stamped envelopes to the Extension Office and we will check to make sure that a note has been written for each buyer on your list. Pick up your GCYLS sale check. To pick up your check, you will need to complete your thank you notes. Freestone County Classic Steer & Heifer Jackpot Shows – May 16 in Fairfield, TX FOOD & NUTRITION 4-H KIDS KAMP – BACKYARD BASICS th When: June 16-18 Time: 9:00am – 2:00pm each day Locations: in Fredericksburg, Kerrville, & Boerne Tuesday – Peaches, Peaches, Peaches Wednesday – Learn to Make Kolaches Thursday – Let’s Make Sausage & Pickles Join us as we tour a peach orchard and then make peach preserves. The next day we will learn the techniques to making scrumptious kolaches and we might even get to sample our 5 May 2015 creations. The last day we will grind and stuff our own sausage, and make refrigerator pickles. Please register by visiting the Extension Office and submitting payment by June 3, 2015. Cost is $30.00 for all 3 days or $15.00 per day. Checks will need to be made to Gillespie FCS rd Committee. Age requirement of 8 yrs. old and in the 3 grade and up during the 2014-2015 school year to be able to participate. Lunch is not included in the registration fee, but $10.00 per day should cover lunch expenses. SHOOTING SPORTS 4-H SHOTGUN CAMP REGISTRATION OPEN When: June 10-13, 2015 Where: Boswell-Porter 4-H Shotgun Range in Snook, TX (near College Station) Limited to 30 youth and 10 adults Ages: 11-16 years as of August 31, 2014 Cost: $350.00 for youth, $150.00 for adults The 4-H Shotgun Camp registration is open on 4-H Connect until May 21st. The camp, held in the College Station area in June, has limited positions for youth and adult participants. The 4-H Shotgun Camp participants will train intensively in one of three shotgun games; American trap, American skeet, or Sporting Clays. The camp is intended for medium range skill level shooters and is not a camp for beginning or advanced shooters. TEXAS 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS COACH TRAINING May 16-17 Waxahachie, TX We’re pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Shooting Sports Coach Certification Training for Archery, Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun in Ellis County (Waxahachie area) on May 16-17, 2015. This training is open to any potential coaches across the state. • Registration will be conducted through 4‐H Connect (http://texas.4honline.com) . • Look for 2015 D8 4-H Shooting Sports Coach Certification Training - Waxahachie • Registration will be open April 1, 2015 and closes May 4, 2015. • Please pay close attention to the deadline! • Cost is $120 Participants MUST have completed and passed the Background Check PRIOR to registering for the event, so if they have not completed this, they should do so IMMEDIATELY! NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Additional details: • Registration will cover meals and course materials. • Only one discipline certification (archery, pistol, rifle, or shotgun) is obtainable per participant per training. • Lodging will not be provided for registrants. • Event will begin at 8:00am on Saturday, May 16 and tentatively end at noon on Sunday, May 17, 2015. • Tentative schedule, what to bring list, and release forms attached. Read the Contest and Registration Information document by clicking https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzVRTVQGAc1hVWttU0pFcTJxU nM/view. Be sure to read this document prior to registering. This registration is open on 4-H Connect with registrations available for youth contestants, coaches, and others. Registration also covers optional lodging and meals packages at the contest site. The contest will be held at the Collin County Adventure Camp outside of Anna. The Texas 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Project (WHEP) is an interactive program that teaches youth about wildlife, habitat, habitat management, and natural resources stewardship. In addition, life skills such as team work, critical thinking, public speaking, and observation are underlying objectives in this youth development effort. Creating educated and involved stewards of natural resources is the long term goal. OTHER 4-H NEWS TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF EXTENSION 4-H AGENTS PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST All photos must be received by the District IV Photography Committee Chair by 5:00pm on May 29, 2015. Late entries will not be accepted. Addressed to ATTN: D4AE4-HA Photography Contest, C/O Dr. Tamra McGaughy, 10056 Marsh Ln, Suite B-101, Dallas, TX 75229. This contest will complement the Texas 4-H Photography Contest categories. Contestants may submit one photo per category. Category descriptions can be found at: http://texas4h.tamu.edu/photography_contest under the State 4-H Contest heading. This contest will use the following categories: AnimalsDomestic, Animals-Wildlife, Catch-All, Dominant Color, Elements of Design, Details & Macro, Food, Nature & Landscape, People, Plant/Flora Youth age should be calculated as of January 1, 2015. 4-H membership is not a requirement for participation in this contest, but participants must reside in Texas. Junior: Youth ages 8 to 10, Intermediate: Youth ages 11 to 13, Senior: Youth ages 14-18, Adult: Any person 19 and older, amateur photographers only Contest participation will cost $10.00 for the first photo and $1.00 for each additional photo per individual. Payment can be check or money orders only and should be mailed with photo submissions. Payment should be made out to D4AE4-HA and in memo line write Photography Contest. Photos will not be considered as an entry until payment is received. Awards will be given for the best photo in each age division per category and the best overall photo per age division. All winning photos will be on display during the 2015 State TAE4-HA Conference in South Padre and will be kept for further viewing at 6 May 2015 discretion of the committee. All other photos will be returned to the local county Extension Office. Division winners will be receive $100.00, Category winners (per age division) will received $10.00. NOTE: Categories with less than 10 photo entries in a division will not be eligible for the Category Winners prize, but will be eligible for the Division Winners prize if photos meet blue quality standards. All th winners will be notified no later than Friday, July 10 , 2015. The District IC delegation is hosting a photography contest to provide scholarship funds for district level 4-H leadership events. TEXAS A&M AGRILIFE 2015 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is launching our 2015 Summer Internship Program. Interns will work with County Extension Agents to coordinate and implement program events and activities. Activities are designed to provide insight to career opportunities in a particular field or specialty. Examples include: * agriculture/natural resources * family and consumer sciences * youth development * community development Participates in regular conferences and meetings where program results and plans are discussed. Assists in preparations for planned events and activities. May also conduct the teaching, training, or other program presentations. Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a course of study relevant to the mission of Extension. GILLESPIE COUNTY 4-H CANNED FOOD DRIVE CONTINUES FOR THIS YEAR! We are asking that each 4-H member bring one non-perishable food item to every 4-H event (club meeting, BBQ, Validation, Food Workshops, showmanship clinics, etc…) this 4-H year. Once items are collected, club secretaries should keep track of how many items have been collected from each club, and this should be reported on monthly club reports or minutes. After each meeting, food items can be brought to the Extension Office for delivery to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry, or clubs may donate items to their local food ministries. ROBOTICS GILLESPIE 4H ROBOTICS SIGN UP Sign-Up Deadline: May 31, 2015 Ages: FLL Grades 3-7, FTC Grades 8-12 rd Age minimum is 3 grade during the 2015-2016 school year Cost: $100.00 per participant (payments must be made in person at the Extension Office – cash or check) Please submit project fee by May 31, 2015 Participants will need to commit to a 2-hour practice per week from mid-September through January and tournaments are normally in San Antonio on a Saturday in January or February. Specific team assignments and practices will not be established until coaches are determined, and this will most likely occur sometime in August. We will work with families to accommodate schedules as best we can, but we need to know several months in advance how many youth are interested so that we can find sponsorships, coaches, and order enough materials. For the FLL division (Grades 3-7), teams will be limited to 6 youth per team and our goal is to group grades 3-5 and 6-7 on separate teams. Harper area residents - It is likely that there will be an FLL team in the Harper area, so please let us know if you are interested in participating on a team in Harper What are FLL & FTC Robotics? They are age-based leagues under FIRST Robotics (http://usfirst.org). We also have a lot of information and videos that will help you to see what the project is like on our website (http://gillespie.agrilife.org > 4H > Robotics) Need coaches We will need 2 adult coaches per team, and the program is expected to grow a significant amount in its second year, so we are in great need of coaches. Coaches do not need to be experts, but it would be helpful if at least one adult per team is computer literate. If you are interested in coaching, please let me know. At the FTC level we need some individuals with programming, electronics, soldering, metal-working, and construction expertise. Need sponsors Each FLL team costs an estimated $1400.00 to fund, and each FTC team costs an estimated $4000.00 to fund, therefore we need sponsors to fund the project. We will be doing two bake sales in the fall to help with expenses, but if you know of any businesses or individuals that would be interested in helping to support the program, please let us know. The entire publication can be found by visiting their website http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/news. 2015 4-H ROUNDUP NATIONAL ANTHEM COMPETITION Texas 4-H Roundup will showcase three 4-H members or groups of 4-H members each day for the singing of the National Anthem during the st General Assemblies. The deadline to submit entries is May 1 2015. • Submissions must be uploaded to http://texas4h.tamu.edu/anthem/ • All submissions MUST BE POSTED TO YouTube(All links made public). • Entries may be submitted on an individual basis or as a group. • Groups cannot be made up of more than four (4) members. Three individuals/teams will be selected to perform one at each assembly held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. • Individuals/teams will be announced May 8, 2015. • Open to all 4-H members regardless of age (9-19). • 4-H member does not have to be a contest participant of Texas 4-H Roundup. • YouTube Video must be of the individual or group (up to four 4-H members) singing the National Anthem. • Singing must be in a capella style (no music). • Videos will be evaluated by a panel of judges with music experience. • If selected to sing participants must be registered on 4-H Connect. HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR JAPAN AND GREECE STUDENTS THIS SUMMER Texas 4-H is seeking partnerships with Families that want to share their home with a Japanese Ambassador this summer. 19 Japanese youth will visit Texas July 22 through August 18. Most have already been placed in homes in Dallas, Denton, Hunt, Blanco, Montgomery, Harris, Fort Bend, Bell, Parker, Collin and Bandera Counties - five boys, ages 12-13 are still needing families! Open your home to one of these youth and share your Texas culture with them as they share their Japanese heritage with you. There are no special requirements to participate, the youth are here for an immersion experience and want to be treated like one of yours. NATIONAL CHILDREN & YOUTH GARDEN SYMPOSIUM July 9-11, 2015 in Austin, TX The National Children and Youth Garden Symposium will be in Austin, Texas July 9-11, 2015. This conference is coordinated by the American Horticulture Society (AHS) and this year the International Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program will be a cohost for the conference. The key note presentation and a complete strand during the conference will be focused on Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s - Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! curricula and the Texas, Grow, Eat & Go research project. DONATE TO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF SAN ANTONIO Each county in District 10 will be collecting items from th th October 1, 2014 to June 19 , 2014. After June 19 , the outgoing district council officers in our district will deliver the items to the hospital and participate in a craft activity with patients. Items that can be collected are listed on the San Antonio Children’s website http://chofsa.org > I want to > Donate > Wish List. The 8 May 2015 number of items that they are looking for is quite large, but most items are toys for infants through teens.
