Position Title: Reports to: FSLA: Location: Date updated: Forest Inventory Analyst Forest Inventory Manager Exempt Portland, Oregon Q2 2015 Overall Responsibilities: The Forest Inventory Analyst is responsible for working with the other members of the Resource Planning & Analysis (RPA) group to provide inventory support along with some basic GIS support to fulfill needs across GreenWood Resources, Inc. (GWR). Duties include support for both domestic and international properties under management, as well as support for acquisition analyses related to potential new investments. The successful candidate is expected to apply fundamental principles of forest inventory analysis while maintaining the high degree of accuracy and integrity that GreenWood requires. Greenwood supports a very multi-cultural and diverse staff and environment. Essential Responsibilities: Interact and become proficient with GreenWood’s internal forest management system, including loading new data and editing existing data Produce statements of stand and property level inventory parameters Perform cruise compilation and analysis for newly collected inventory cruise data Perform annual updates for growth, depletions, acquisitions, and dispositions Run inventory change analyses and produce reports Run inventory-to-cutout analyses and produce reports Apply growth and yield models to develop yield tables for forest planning and harvest scheduling analyses Produce basic inventory maps, such as cruise maps and stand maps, for use by RP&A and other groups within GreenWood as required Perform inventory-related spatial analyses including net area calculation, buffering for roads, riparian areas, and wildlife, and possibly other inventory-based spatial analyses. Use a full range of tools to perform inventory analysis and reporting tasks, including: o Microsoft Access and Excel, SQL Server databases o A range of public and proprietary growth and yield models spanning a range of U.S. and international geographies o ESRI software (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, etc.) o Cengea software Scope: Work within the Resource Planning & Analysis group under the direction of the Forest Inventory Manager in a team environment to provide high quality and timely analyses for both internal and external company and client needs. Utilize creative, resourceful, and responsible thinking, decision making, and problem solving skills to help the RP&A team meet company needs in an environment of evolving priorities. Interact with GreenWood employees in different countries to understand different information needs and be able to understand and help solve problems across geographies. Experience and Skill Set Requirements: A minimum of a Master’s degree in Forest Management, Biometrics, or Silviculture plus two years related work experience or Bachelor’s degree in Forestry plus five years related work experience; Graduate degree in preferred Understanding of the fundamental principles of forest inventory and analysis including, but not limited to, sampling, cruise compilation, merchandising, annual updating, cutout analyses, and growth and yield Strong basis of technical skills with relational databases and forest records systems. Familiarity with GIS systems including ESRI/Arc products An ability to think critically and creatively with regards to problem solving in order to help the RP&A team meet company needs in short timeframes Excellent organizational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Desired Experience and Skills: Programming and scripting tools (VBA, Python, Perl, etc.) Statistical software and modeling tools (R, SAS, Stata, etc.) Experience with international forest plantation management Fluency in Spanish a plus This position description is not intended to be and should not be construed as an all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills or working conditions associated with this position.
