Leader:
All:
I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.
And you forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Let us pray:
Holy and Eternal God,
We are walking on a journey of faith with you and with one
another, but we confess that we sometimes lose sight of Christ,
our guide and our goal. We stray from the path of righteousness
and fall into sin. We stray from the path of mercy, and become
hypocrites, condemning when we should forgive. We confess
that we are lost until you find us. We pray for your mercy and
forgiveness, Lord. We pray for your righteousness and goodness.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell, the third day
He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on
the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and
the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
written by the Confirmation Students
Lauren Scott
Eternal God, the whole family of earth is one, breathe your spirit into
our hearts that we may establish a global community of trust and
fellowship, justice and peace. Take away the darkness of our minds that
we may see your light, think your thoughts, and serve your glory by
advancing the greater good of all people.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
Jack Porter
Today we pray for our country that seems so divided by rich and
poor, black and white, Republicans and Democrats, those who have
succeeded and those who are struggling. We pray that our leaders
and each of us can try to bring people together, to see our common
challenges, to unite us and make us stronger. We pray that we can
find peace together.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
Daniel Wisdom
Please help all those living in Baltimore, so that the may reach peaceful
civil progress. We ask that the police, in Baltimore and everywhere else,
may come to a better understanding with the people whom the serve.
We pray that all people can feel comfortable with public authorities,
regardless of race, throughout the world.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
Lauren Mattison
God of wisdom, help all the humans on earth who struggle through life.
Let them be happy, and guide them to safety. Teach everyone to love one
another and be kind, and help them to be brave when natural disasters
happen.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
William Howe
Caring God, we pray for the sick and the depressed. We also pray for the
lonely and that God hold them in his hearts. And we pray for those who
struggle in any way and that God help them in their struggles.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
Sarah Margaret Miller
We pray that God’s loyal servants might help the needy children of
the world. We pray that all children are given the things they need to
grow and that they might know God’s love for them.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, forever. Amen.

WELCOME
Our congregation has been welcoming members and visitors to worship on
the Lord’s Day since March 16, 1780.
If you are visiting today, we extend a special welcome and invite you to
introduce yourself to a pastor or speak with an usher if you have any questions.
If you are looking for a church home and would like to talk with a pastor,
please fill out the fellowship book in the pew today or call the church office.
To learn more about our history and who we are, we invite you to explore our
website: www.gtownpres.org.
Today's prayers for the people were written by our confirmation class. They
were asked to pray for the world, our country, our community, our church,
and our children. These prayers are their own words.
In today’s music, the hymn tune Slane, which we will sing as the closing hymn,
has its origins as an Irish folk tune. The composer of the tune is not known. It
was first associated with a folk ballad before being set in 1927 by David Evans
to the Irish hymn “Be Thou My Vision.” We welcome back Ben McClamrock,
our resident virtuoso on the Great Highland Bagpipe. He will play the prelude
and some celebratory tunes on the porch following today’s confirmation service.
The flowers in the Chancel today are given by Nathan Stevens Vanderploeg
to the glory of God and in honor of his late father, W. Stevens Vanderploeg,
and his last visit to GPC.
The ushers for May are Gordon Grant, Captain; Nancy Benzing, Julie
Goffe, Mildred Grant, Shelley Jennings, Cristian Lopez, Jennie Lopez,
Deborah McFadden, Nat Semple, Grant Welch, Laura Welch, Marjorie West.
Today after the service, visitors and members are cordially invited to the
Georgetown Room for Lunch Bunch “Salad Days” hosted this week by Katy
McBride, Cynthia Johnson and the Confirmation Sponsors. Join us for a
festive spring meal!
Assisted listening devices may be found at the back of the sanctuary. Each
device comes with a headset, but you may bring your own from home to plug
in. Please let the ushers or Alex Ray know if you have any problems.
Readings are from the New Revised Standard Version translation of the Bible
unless otherwise indicated. Blue Bibles are located at the end of each pew.
Altered Children’s Worship Schedule Today
Young Children and Worship has an altered schedule today, so that the
children can come back to see the vows of the Confirmation students.
Children age 2 through 1st grade will be led upstairs by Rev. Vaagenes after
Time with Children, and will then return to the main worship during the
Doxology where they will sit in the front row to get a good view. Please
collect your children from the front after the service. Children 2nd grade and
up will stay in the main service.
Congratulations!
Join us in celebrating our Senior Pastor on her reception of a Doctorate of
Ministry (D.Min) this past Monday from Wesley Theological Seminary.
Rev. Dr. Murray’s dissertation was entitled, “Waging War on One’s
Knees: A Study on Prayer as a Leadership Tool Using the Theology and the Practice
of Martin Luther King, Jr.”
