Parents/students together had the opportunity to experience the fun of exploring a variety of math problems and to use their math skills. A very special thank you to the following Greenvale teachers who made this possible by volunteering to facilitate this family event: Mrs. Lodolo, Mrs. Ramunto, Mrs. Hellthaler, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Pesce, Ms. Finn, Mr. Rich, Ms. Malone, Ms. O’Sullivan, Mrs. Arnone, Mrs. Kaufman, Mrs. Fielding, Ms. Daitch, Mrs. Gamils, Ms. Cassaro, Mr. Becker, Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. Lo Vecchio, Ms. Borkin, Mrs. O’Hara, Ms. Chiodo, Mr. Power, Dr. Hattar. A special thank you to Mrs. Gamils, who started this event 5 years ago and continues to coordinate the many details of the evening. As a result of her leadership, Math Madness has become a very special tradition at Greenvale. With assistance from Mrs. Diane Parra and the Greenvale PTA, Math Madness is an impressive examples of a true home-school collaborative experience. Mrs. Gamils and the staff members listed above continue to inspire parents and students as they teach a myriad of ways to increase math proficiency and how to have much fun doing so. CLASS PLACEMENTS 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR We will soon begin the process of class placements for the 2015-2016 school year. This is an extensive process that takes into consideration many factors such as academics, student behaviors, ranges in ability, boy/girl ratio etc. Our teachers and specialists share information regarding each student during the class placement process. It is our collective goal to create well balanced classes in which each student can experience optimum learning. Please note that student placements are not done based on parent requests. However, if you have any specific concerns or information that you believe would be helpful, please include this information in a letter to me before April 30. Placements of incoming second grade students are made at Waverly, by Waverly staff. Placement letters for the 2015-2016 school year will be mailed out in late August, after screening of all new students has been completed. Changes to student placement cannot be made once notifications are sent home. While many children go to Google or another search engine, databases which are paid for by subscription, have reviewed information that generally does not have the accuracy problems that occur on the open web. We encourage our students to use these sources! Worldbookonline.com contains all of the information from The World Book Encyclopedia, a wonderful, accurate source that includes information about people, places and things with multi-reading levels and a digital reader. Our 2nd graders are starting to use the KIDS version of this product. We cannot publish the log on and password for this product online. PLEASE E-MAIL MDAITCH@EASTCHESTER.K12.NY.US and I will give you the log in and password information. The rest of our databases are accessible through the school web site. Use the pull-down for School Information to find the library pages. At the top-left on the page you will find information about Culturegrams. This database has very user friendly information about people and cultures. The NOVEL databases (password: look) are arranged by subject. It includes many different products, including those by Grolier whose Lands and People, Amazing Animals of the World, Multimedia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Americana, New Book of Popular Science, New Book of Knowledge, and La Nueva Enciclopedia CUMBRE can be searched all at once through the Find it Fast search box.
