Atlee High School and our school division. The survey can be found at http://www.advanced.org/survey/public/9470221, or you can obtain a paper copy from our main office. Please
note that in two questions, the survey refers to a “governing body;” this refers to the School
Board, not the administration at an individual school.
4. On April 2, 2015, Atlee DECA will be hosting an Awareness Night for the Muscular Dystrophy
Association at the softball and baseball games versus Glen Allen High School. This night will
be dedicated to Zaequan White, a cousin of one of our DECA members, who lost his fight with
muscular dystrophy and passed away on January 30, 2015 at the age of 12. Atlee DECA will be
giving away various prizes and will have an MDA informational tent with a representative from
the Richmond Muscular Dystrophy Association. A family member of Zaequan’s and a MDA
ambassador will be present to throw the ceremonial first pitch at each game. We will be
collecting donations at the game for MDA to send children to MDA summer camp this summer.
To date, Atlee DECA has raised over $4000 for MDA summer camp and is one of the top 15
DECA chapters in the country who have raised the most money for MDA - we are close to being
in the top 10 in the country! Come out on Thursday, April 2 to cheer for our Raiders and
support the MDA.

materials were developed by Common Sense Education and are endorsed by the National PTA.
These workshops will resume in March. Please remember that due to the sensitive nature of
some of the material in these courses, adults only please.

A Note From Our Substance Abuse & Prevention Counselor, Mrs. Susan Robertson:
Our pre-teens and teens are living in a world saturated with drug and alcohol messages in
their music, books, movies and television. Sometimes parents don’t want to believe that
their child would consider using drugs or alcohol. Here are some the ways parents deny
the use of drug/alcohol or the seriousness of the problem:








My kid can’t be using. He has a job and doesn’t have time.
If my daughter would stop hanging around Jessica, everything would be okay.
I send my son to private school because they don’t use drugs there.
She can’t be using. She plays sports.
Thank goodness he is only drinking. He could be using drugs.
Thank goodness she is only smoking weed. She could be using hard drugs.
He wouldn’t do that. He hates when his father drinks.
We have a good relationship. If she was using, she would tell me.
It is important to note that teens deny or minimize the seriousness of their substance use
by saying:








I’m holding it for a friend.
I’ve only done it once…I promise. I got caught the first time I used it.
Are you accusing me? You know I wouldn’t do something like that!
Everybody does it. It’s not a big deal.
I have to use or I won’t fit in with my friends.
My best friend uses and they make straight A’s.
It calms me down. It’s my medicine.
You did it when you were young. Why shouldn’t I?
Helping our kids stay healthy and drug-free should be our goal. If you have questions or
concerns and wish to speak confidentially with our School Substance Use & Prevention
Counselor, please contact Ms. Robertson at (804) 730-2503.
