SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
"It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will
remain." We sometimes tend to believe the opposite.
It's not unusual for us to think, "I have chosen to be a
Christian," and then to imagine that the process really
started with us, that it was our initiative, our decision
to believe, our act of faith that got the ball rolling in
our spiritual life. Of course our decision is important,
but Jesus reminds us today that he is actually the one
who took the first step. He chose us. He called and
invited us to be among his followers and friends. As
the second reading tells us, "God sent his only Son
into the world so that we might have life through
him." That happened first. The next step is ours, to
accept this life that is offered to us through our own
act of faith. The other part of this equation is that, as
Jesus tells us, we have been chosen for a mission.
This isn't all just about our personal faith and our
relationship with him. He calls us to know and love
him, and when we respond, we are "appointed" to be
fruitful in the world. We are supposed to live our faith
in such a way that something valuable, beautiful, and
useful comes from it. Jesus sends us to make the
world a better place, not in a vague, feel good, fluffy
way but in a real, concrete way. He equips us to bear
fruit that will remain. This isn't superficial or flighty.
The work we do in the world, whether it be alleviating
the suffering of the sick and poor, evangelizing those
who do not know about the gift of salvation, raising
our children to be faithful Christians, or carrying out
our career with integrity and generosity, all of this is
meant to be the effect of our response to the call that
Jesus gave us.

EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL
Loving God, We pray for all those
affected by the earthquake in Nepal
as we offer the words of the
psalmist, “Be strong and take heart,
all who hope in the Lord”. (Psalm 31:25) Baskets will
be available this weekend, at the entrances to the
church. Funds will be promptly sent to Catholic Relief
Services.
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
Today’s Gospel challenges us to “love one another as
I have loved you.” Jesus is our model and he asks us
to “lay down our life” (our time, attention, opinions
and needs) for each other. This is the sacrament of
the family, when God is made visible in our sacrificial
love for one another.
2015 ARCHBISHOPS ANNUAL APPEAL
Next weekend is Commitment Weekend at our parish and
across the Archdiocese for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal. All parishioners will have the opportunity to make
a pledge to the 2015 AAA. A final call for those who have
not yet participated. There will be a special insert in next
weekend’s bulletin to assist in making a pledge.
THANKS FROM THE RICCINI FAMILY, Words cannot
express the gratitude we feel in your support of our
son Braeden at the recent Pancake Breakfast held at
Holy Spirit parish. It is very heartwarming to know
that people care so much.
Thank you for your
kindness and generosity.

WEDDING BANNS
II. Bryan Ouelette and
Ashley Sahadi
On Sunday, May 24, the Church celebrates one of its
major feast days: Pentecost Sunday, the descent of
the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and disciples of
Jesus. This is also the patronal feast of our parish.
To note the occasion, we plan to offer the petitions in
the various languages representative of the diverse
ethnic heritage of our parishioners.
This is in
keeping with the assigned Scripture readings from
the Acts of the Apostles, which states, “When the time
for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in on place
together. Then there appeared to them tongues as of
fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of
them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in different tongues, as he Spirit
enabled them to proclaim.”
In order to accomplish this, we still need petitioners
for Polish, Indian, and Italian. If you are interested in
participating, please contact Deacon Jim Shiels, 203238-3101. (Please remember this is also Memorial
Day Weekend).

PASTORAL PLANNING
The process of planning for the future of our archdiocese
is well on its way. It is important to have input from all
interested parishioners. Included in today’s bulletin is an
insert which contains a letter from Archbishop Blair, with
information and the link to an online survey which you
can access from your computer, laptop, tablet or mobile
phone. (www.research.net/s/pastoralplanning).
The
online survey is available now and will remain open until
Monday, May 25. We encourage you to access the
online survey as soon as possible. If you need a paper
survey, you may obtain one in English, Polish or Spanish
by calling the rectory (860.666.5671). Paper surveys
should also be returned by Monday, May 25.

the

occurs on the Sixth Sunday of

Those
should
be
recognized. The “Book of Blessings” has a
profound blessing of mothers that recognizes
that all blessings come from God.
The most
recognized date for the first Mother's Day in
our country was in 1908. It was created by
Anna Jaris. She worked tirelessly to make this
day a national day in the United States. She
even incorporated herself as "Mother's Day
International Association" and worked for
the rest of her life against the commercialism
that had taken over her commemorative day.
There are many instances of marking certain
days for mothers in world history. However, for
us Christians it has deeper meaning because
it falls during the Marian month of May. We
hold our earthly mothers in high esteem and
hold our heavenly mother, the Virgin Mary, in
high esteem also. This Mother's Day take some
real time and thank your Mom with more
than just a box of candy.
We
wish
all
mothers,
grandmothers,
godmothers, step-mothers, and all women who
have been an influence in the lives of their
children, a very Happy and Blessed Mother’s
Day.
