Western is a new charter high school for 600 youth in grades 912. The college prep curriculum prepares students for admission to college and provides recognized credentials in healthcare. 8th graders who want to become a healthcare professional: doctor, nurse, dentist, veterinarian, hospital administrator, or medical researcher are invited to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 14th at 6 p.m. Students visit hospitals, anatomy labs, operating rooms, and meet medical professionals who provide advice about careers. They become certified in American Red Cross Babysitting and First Aid as well as CPR to prepare for hospital fellowship and internship opportunities. Cub Master Lillian Robles at St. Gall Parish was presented with the St. George award for outstanding contributions to the Spiritual development of Catholic youth through Scouting. She served as coordinator and counselor for religious emblems at Five Holy Martyrs Parish from 2008-2010 and currently promotes attendance at the annual Scout Sunday Mass for St. Gall Cub Scout Pack 3697 and Troop 697. Her many positions in Scouting include Pack Committee Member and Asst. Cub Master of Pack 3210; Committee member of Troop 096 and 465; Cub Master of Packs 3022, 3697, 3410, 3820 and 3443; Committee chairman of Troop 697; Scout Master of Troop 402 and 698; member of LIFE L. Pales Silvana Tabares, newly elected representative for the 21st district of the Illinois House of Representatives visited Kelly High School on Jan. 24th to meet with students and staff and discuss educational and neighborhood issues. A Democrat and Brighton Park native, she spoke to Mr. Brian Halberg’s law class about her background, education, work experience, and eventual path to elected office, while questioning students about their experiences working for campaigns at the local, state and national level. She also observed students preparing for the Cook County Mock Trial Competition and met with members of the Mikva Challenge Club. Tabares’s visit was a wonderful way to allow Candy Days For Misericordia North Misericordia, 6300 N. Ridge ave., will sponsor its 11th annual Candy Days on Friday and Satuday, April 26th & 27th. The fundraiser helps cover the difference between what the State of Illinois provides and what it costs to care for 600 adults and children. In 1976, 39 children, mostly with Downs Syndrome and 35 Staff left Misericordia Home South, 47th & Richmond to begin Misericordia North on the former Angel Guardian Orphanage Campus. All of their savings went to renovate four floors of two buildings to create three dormitories and a learning center. The agency provides human services for people with developental disabilities, currently 16 adults in their sixties and 68 adults in their fifties. Individuals or groups who wish to volunteer to man a corner for the Candy Days may contact Tessa at (773) 273-2768. ___________________ Scholarship Fund At Kelly High Thomas Kelly High School, 41st & California, has created a new initiative entitled The Saint Thomas O’Kelly Scholarship Fund to raise $25,000 for new and existing scholarships. Proceeds will be distributed to deserving students via the Dexter Duck Scholarship, Dream Act Scholarship, and several departmental and sports scholarships. The visit also allowed Kelly students, some of whom are registered voters, the chance to have a direct conversation with a state legislator and express their concerns about issues they believe are important to their community. Students found the visit to be a great opportunity for them to learn more about real world politics and were inspired by her story. “The most important thing I learned from Rep. Late filers may receive nearly 25% less financial aid than those who complete it early in the year. City Clerk Susana A. Mendoza and Ladder Up have partnered to provide free FAFSA workshops in room 107 of City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. through April 9th. This is a free service, regardless of income, and no appointment is necessary. The FAFSA is required for all students seeking grants, workstudy opportunities or student loans. Students interested in attending a university, community college or technical program may be eligible to receive more than $10,000 in grants and other aid. Required information for applicants and their parents or spouse are Social Security numbers, birthdates, 2012 income statements, completed 2012 federal tax return (if available) or 2011 tax return, checking and savings account balances and a list of colleges. Linn White Drive, Mu-seum Campus on Satur-day, Feb. 16th from 12 to 4 p.m. Families will have the opportunity to explore Northerly Island and come face-to-face with live animals, engage in winter activities and create nature-inspired crafts. Registration For Polar Plunge Catholic School Week At PJPII School Registration is now open for the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge at North Avenue Beach on Sunday, March 3rd from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Special Olympics Chicago. Known for its festive costumes and courageous participants, last year’s event attracted more than 2,000 participants, and raised more than $650,000.
