Monday, June 8, 2015 2 – 5 pm IDPOC Sessions at the 23rd WCD Vancouver, Canada The IMPACT of Patient Organizations on Dermatology Locally & Globally Program Details to-date Developed for dermatologists, these four sessions will highlight tips and accomplishments of patient-based organizations, as well as how individual dermatologists may assist in their initiatives for the benefit of more patients. Target Audiences: Dermatologists Patient Support Leaders Industry Representatives Learning Objectives: At the end of this engaging afternoon of four sessions, participants will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Understand the important role that patient-based dermatology organizations can play in advancement of patient support, education, research, and advocacy. Appreciate different approaches for projects and initiatives for patient-based organizations from around the world. Identify challenges faced by patient-based organizations in partnering with dermatologists and their professional organizations. Learn how dermatologists can help patients launch and sustain these organizations. Recognize the large reserve of patients who are eager to engage the dermatological profession in enhancing care. 2:00 - 2:45 Best-in-Class – Featuring patients, patient groups and organizations that have made a difference in worldwide advancement of dermatology patient education, support and care. This panel presentation with Q&A will provide the audience with examples of the enormous impacts that 3 international and national organizations have made in terms of advocacy for treatments and for increased access to dermatologists. Format: 3 panelists with 10-minute presentations and 15 minutes for Q&A Panelists: Lars Ettarp, IFPA - The role of International Federation of Psoriasis Associations in securing the WHO resolution, and the advance of understanding and research of psoriasis via IFPA conferences. Christine Janus, CSPA/CAPP – Publishing Dermatology Report Cards which impact Canadian policy development for access to treatment and dermatologists has been supported by Canadian Skin Patient Alliance and Canadian Association of Psoriasis Patients. International Patient Organization - TBC 2:50 - 3:35 Cooperation in launching or nurturing a patient-based organization - the role of a dermatologist? An overview of key elements that need to come together for a successful organization and examples of support systems to ensure sustainability. Each panelist will speak about: • • • Dermatologists speak about the benefits to their country, their patients, and their practices resulting from their work with patient organizations. How they helped form the patient-based organization and why The benefits provided by the organization to them and to the field of dermatology Format: Overview presentation (9 minutes) followed by 3 panelists with 7-minute presentations and 15 minutes for Q&A Speakers: Christine Janus, CSPA / CAPP - Overview of key elements needed for a sustainable organization (hand-out provided) Panelists: • A dermatologist • A patient leader from an organization supported by an international organization • A patient leader from an organization founded solely by patients (TBA) 3:40 – 4:10 Dermatologists advance patient care in any country through easy support of patient-based organizations. Demonstrating collaboration on key issues that affect sustainability. From funding to ethical issues, as well as staffing, engaging volunteers, patient outreach and beyond, 3 patient leaders each provide insight into current challenges to be followed by practical tips of 2 dermatologists demonstrating how dermatologists can easily support these organizations to thrive. Format: Quickfire - PowerPoint-based (Each of 3 leaders present a major challenge their patient organization faced, and 2 dermatologists present their support and tips for advancement of patient care.) Speakers: TBA - 3 respected leaders of patient organizations representing a range of jurisdictions and skin diseases and, 2 dermatologists. 4:15- 5:00 Under the Same Sun – A Tanzanian Success Story. With myths resulting in fear of witchcraft and exile, Persons with Albinism in Tanzania struggle for assistance in this sun-drenched country where skin cancer is prevalent due to lack of awareness of Albinism as a genetic disorder, and that the negative impact of sun exposure requires methods of prevention. The founder, Peter Ash, has been working together with dermatologists, international organizations and patient groups in groundbreaking humanitarian work, and will present this session. Format: PowerPoint slide presentation with Q&A.
