In 1321, the University of Cambridge adopted specific styles and color combinations. American colleges and universities desired to adopt a standard code for academic dress for colleges and universities in the United States. The standards continue to be followed by the American Council of Education. The costumes worn today are all traditional and their colors, trimmings and patterns interpret the degree, the field of learning, and the institution that conferred the degree. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed; the master’s gown has an oblong sleeves open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves, is faced with velvet and has three bars across the sleeves. The academic procession is led by the grand marshal, who is the President of the Faculty Senate. A traditional order to procession is followed: First come the candidates for degrees according to the order in which the degrees are to be conferred; next, members of the faculty led by the faculty marshal, the honorary degree recipient and the other members of the platform party followed by the president of the university. The order is reversed for the recessional. You will note that some of today’s graduates are wearing a gold stole. This stole indicates that the wearer is graduating with academic honors. Say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, O’re the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming. And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. Oh!, Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’re the land and of the free and the home of the brave? The Guam Hymn Ramon Manalisay Sablan, M.D. (1934) Translated to Chamorro by Lagrimas Untalan Fanoghe Chamorro put it tano’-ta Kanta I matuna-na gi todu I lugat.
