Marine Corps League ILLOWA- John C. Hernstrom Detachment #102
May – June 2015 News Letter
Greetings everyone, as we move into the warmer months we have lots to talk about. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank everyone for your many contributions and your service to the League, our
country, and our Corps.
I am glad to report to everyone that we have had six new members join the Detachment since the
beginning of the year. That is wonderful, please keep up the recruiting efforts we all know our community
is rich with potential members and associate members.
We will be promoting the League again this year at the Quad Cities Air Show this weekend Saturday &
Sunday May 9th & 10th. We will be manning our booth in between the Marine Moms and the Quad Cities
Marine Recruiters. Come out and be a part of this event and see the Navy Blue Angels.
We are hosting the Eyes of Freedom traveling Memorial, May 14-18, 2015 at the Golden Leaf Banquet
and Convention Center Located at 2902 East Kimberly Road in Davenport Iowa. This is the story of Lima
Company 3rd Battalion 25th Marine Regiment, inspired by the 22 Marines and 1 Navy Corpsman they lost
while conducting Combat Operations in Iraq’s Anbar Province in 2005. Our annual SOS Dinner and
Auction will be included in this five day event. The Eyes of Freedom Memorial is a no cost open to the
public event. The SOS Dinner and Auction will be Saturday 16 May at the same venue, the Dinner will be
served from 5:00pm – 6:30pm the cost is $10. After the SOS Dinner we will have the annual Auction.
Please come out and support this event and pass the word as it is open to the public. The Eyes of
Freedom is an absolute must see you will not be disappointed. For more information refer to the
attachment/enclosure and or our Detachment website @ www.illowamarines.org
Attached/Enclosed is also a tentative schedule of upcoming events that the Detachment plans on
participating in. Please mark your calendars and continue to show your support to our League.
Please note that our Detachment Scholarship applications are due to the Committee no later than 30
June 2015. Applications and instructions can be found on our website. This year’s Scholarship recipients
will be awarded at the Detachment annual summer picnic.
Our Detachment continues to reinforce its commitment to our community and our Corps by getting
involved in community events, working with the local I & I Staff, as well as the local Marine Corps
Recruiters, and Marine Moms. Thanks to all of our members for being true Ambassadors as we work with
all of our Marine friends in an effort to promote the Marine Corps League. I ask that all of our members
please continue to stay active and support the many things that our Detachment is involved in and
continue legacy of our Corps and the pursuit of new members.
In closing I would like to say thank you to the IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union for being our Title
sponsor for the Eyes of Freedom. I would also like to thank all of the other corporate and private sponsors
for their support and contributions. A special thanks to our Detachment committee members for all of your
dedicated work and commitment in preparing for the Eyes of Freedom, securing sponsorships, preparing
for the SOS/Auction, working with the host venue, and making all of the phone calls, emails, and all of the
other behind the scenes contributions and efforts. Thanks Everyone! That includes our spouses and
Associate Members.
