Camper Nathan Keninger of Iowa Falls passed away in December of 2006 due to complications of Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy Read how Nathan’s family is remembering him through a gift to the camp on page 3. Fun at Summer Camp by camper Nathan Keninger The start of camp is on a warm day in June. We drive to Monticello and get there around noon. We drive down a lane and meet a man. The man helps us unload my bags from our van. We meet with my counselor and go to the meeting place. I look around trying to find a familiar face. I am happy when my friends arrive, so we talk late into the night. We rise when we see the early morning light. Our first activity of the week is the super-zip. Since the path to get there is on a hill, I hope I don’t tip. We dance into the night by the light of the moon, And we go to bed because we are going home soon. We rise to an early flag raising and a late morning snack. Since we are going home soon, our counselors help us pack. When we say good-bye to our friends, some may shed a tear, Because we won’t be together until camp next year. Camp Courageous recruits the very best staff. They come from throughout the world, some working on internships, some with the summer off from special education teaching, and some just willing to donate a year or two of their lives to Camp Courageous. They believe in the mission and the joy that comes with providing this experience to those that are so grateful and their families. Currently staff is housed in a somewhat primitive dormitory situation. It is the goal of the camp to build a facility that will house 20 year-round program staff, where each staff person will have their own room, with their own bathroom, desk, bed, and more. Often times staff, when on cabin duty, can be up for over 24 hours… when rest is so important, being in your own room, makes a world of difference to one’s health and well-being. Camp Courageous is a year-round recreational and respite care facility for individuals with disabilities. Run on donations, with no government assistance, no formal sponsorship, and no one paid to raise funds for the camp; over 5,000 campers with special needs experience Camp Courageous each year. In addition to family--camp counselors, staff and the many campers who became his friends during his 12 summers at camp will remember him fondly. Regina Keninger, Nathan’s mother, recalls how Nathan was tearful when he was dropped off his first summer. The following summers he would not want to leave his new friends at the end of the week. Nathan’s past counselors said he enjoyed many of the camp activities, but mostly enjoyed socializing with the friends he made. Nathan will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Every summer when it was time to get ready for camp, Nathan would begin to be apprehensive if his counselor would know how to best care for him. Like many campers with Muscular Dystrophy, Nathan was completely reliant on his counselors to care for his day-to-day needs. When the Keninger family heard about camp’s need for mechanical lifts to assist complete-care-campers, like Nathan, the family did not hesitate to jump in and raise money. They know first hand, the importance of the feeling of safety and security when Nathan was being transferred from wheelchair to bed. Thanks to the Keninger’s efforts, camp has raised enough money for at least 2 of the 5 lifts needed. Another of Nathan’s friends, Jerry Ackerman, President and Owner of JVA Mobility has pledged to purchase a lift and slings for camp. In 2006, the nursing staff treated an increasing number of counselors due to injuries caused by transferring non-ambulatory campers from bed to wheelchair. Camp currently has one outdated mechanical lift that needs to be replaced. It is most beneficial to campers and counselors to have a lift located in each cabin and one in the pool for easy access. These mechanical lifts will be of most help to camp by reducing the number of staff injuries due to lifting, reduce time off for injury, as well as increase the quality of care provided to non-ambulatory campers. These lifts cost thousands of dollars and the camp’s goal is unattainable without help. Would you join me in donating money in Nathan’s honor to put a mechanical lift in each cabin and the pool at camp for easy access for campers and counselors? Items still needed are: 2 additional lifts (one with a 500 lb capacity), slings for each lift in various sizes, extra batteries, and cost of shipping. With donations of $5 to $20 dollars, our goal will be quickly met! Thanks for your continued support of Camp Courageous of Iowa! Amanda Gaworski, RN Assistant Nursing Director Pictured is a Power Lift w-Low Base 450 Lbs by Invacare that is being purchased with the funds raised by the Keninger family. It is a battery powered lift that includes 2 batteries and charger. Slings will be purchased to go along with the lift. Gifts of any amount are appreciated… along with gifts of material and labor to build this structure that is so key to the continued success of Camp Courageous. Current Funding For The Staff Dormitory ($500,000 needed… plus volunteer time and materials) David Cuckler Pledge ……………… $50,000 Aegon Pledge ……… $25,000 ($12,500 paid) Charlie & Pat Becker ………………… $1,000 George & Cathy Jacques ……………… $1,000 Helen E. Presenting the award is Dave Dickey of Packwood. Dave is a Past-President of PMCI and gives the Camp Courageous report each year to the PMCI membership. It was great to see Sara Ballou at this year’s Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Convention in Des Moines. Sara was one of camp’s outstanding past camp volunteers. She is currently a student at Drake. She is doing an internship with the Soybean Organization, where she has met individuals like camp’s Past Board President, Ed Recker. Sara is the daughter of camp supporters and great individuals, Bob Ballou and Janet Martin. Get your own 2007 PMCI die cast collector’s 1954 model car $20.00 each plus postage To order your 2007 PMCI collector’s die cast car, call the camp at 319-465-5916, ext. 2100. 4 Harold White started his work at Camp Courageous as a volunteer in the 1980s. He was a huge help through the fastest growth of the camp in the 1990s and was a part of the building of almost every new building. Harold had an unmatched honesty... if camp was selling pencils for a nickel, and Harold felt they were worth a dime, he would pay the dime. He always had the staff and campers foremost on his mind...making sure everything was super clean, sanitary, and done right. When there was concern that the wood floor on the second story of Menster Cabin caused excessive noise for the campers who slept below, Harold personally paid to have the second floor carpeted. Harold was not paid exceptionally over the years, but he was among the camp’s staff top one or two donors in the history of camp. He was always there to backup his opinions with his personal gifts. Harold provided the paint and supplies in memory of his son to build the climbing wall in the camp gym. When equipment was needed in the laundry, he donated a new washer and dryer and hundreds of dollars in laundry soap. He donated a $500 drinking fountain when he saw the need. Harold and Patricia also donated pool blocks. Harold has a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need and he often did. Harold’s strong desire has always been to do what is right and a desire to do a job to the best of his ability. His integrity and willingness to put his own money behind his desire to have things done right will be missed and long remembered. We wish Harold and Patricia a wonderful retirement! The award honored the 180-member club for conducting the most outstanding community service program in the Midwest Region during 2006. “For the past 14 years, Eagle One has been proud to recognize and reward car clubs whose members have demonstrated exceptional involvement in, and support of, community and charitable causes, while actively engaged in the preservation and restoration of one of our country’s greatest historical heritages, the automobile,” said Cheryl Zimbrick, Director of Marketing. Congratulations to a wonderful group! We look forward to seeing you at Cruisin’ for Camp Courageous 2007! (See page 33 for Cruisin details.) David and Carolyn Mason of Bettendorf show one of 60 new bath towels they donated to camp, along with a box of needed items, and a plaque for the Visitors Center that they had inscribed with only two words… ”Thank God”. We are grateful to this wonderful couple who drove through some snowy weather to deliver these beautiful gifts. Thank you Masons! Camp Courageous would like to thank Fareway Stores in Cedar Rapids, Dyersville, Marion, Monticello, and North Liberty for collecting 29 cases of food products during Cases for Camp project. Jim McDonough presents a check to Camp Courageous as a result of his 2006 Holiday Concerts. Pictured is Jim in the camp store where his CDs are available for puchase. We are very grateful to Jim and his support of Camp Courageous! In Memory of… Larry K. Woellert, of Manchester, Iowa, was a correspondent for the Cedar Rapids Gazette, DubuqueTelegraph Herald, Dyersville Commercial and was Publisher of the Manchester Press, until he retired in 2005. Larry touched more lives in a wonderful way than he ever realized. In particular Camp Courageous is a far better place today because Larry backed all that the camp does, from the Manchester Garage Sale (the camp’s largest fund raiser) to just making folks aware of what the camp was all about. He lent his support of the camp through his involvement in organizations like Lions Club. Larry was always there wanting to know what more he could do. Larry was a gem to his profession and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. On the behalf of over 5,000 campers with special needs that Camp Courageous serves, their families, the staff, and board, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Joyce and all of Larry’s family and friends. 10 Gary and Joann Weers Mrs. Anne Wegman - In memory of Donald Woods Gary and Marilyn Winders - In memory of Judy Von Sprecken George and Dorothy Wood - In memory of Hyla Belle Tonne and Bob Stickley LeRoy and Judy Wood - In memory of Patricia Hinz Anamosa Care Center Bard Concrete - In memory of Wayne Joslin C.E. and Evelyn Rigby Trust Citizens Bank - In memory of Gene Adams, Jim Brown, and Evalena Poppe J & P Cycles - In memory of Jacob A. Camper Dennis Thompson with the Reach for Your Potential group finds his way around the camp with snow shoes. Dennis’ first visit to Camp Courageous was in 1988… great to see him back again this year. Memorial gifts… Camp is grateful to so many of you who have given gifts to camp in memory of loved ones. The cards and letters expressing the wonderful memories, left to you by your loved ones, has provided us the inspiration to reach out to those in need and bring joy to their lives. It is in the memory of your loved ones that we dedicate ourselves to doing all that is within our abilities, to bring true happiness to the campers and their families served by camp. 11 (L-R) Honorary Board Member Ralph Palmer recently gave a program to the Greater Cedar Rapids Area Home Builders Association. Executive Officer Midge Barvinek and Board President Mike Flynn present a check to Camp Courageous in honor of Ralph. When Ralph gives programs throughout the world, he donates the fee to Camp Courageous. Many members of the Greater Cedar Rapids Area Home Builders Association have helped Camp Courageous over the years…and we look forward to a continued close relationship! CAD Skills Needed Camp Courageous is always growing and changing and to help with facilities camp is looking to create a master site map with camp’s buildings and buried utilities. To do this the camp is looking for some help from the Engineering professionals. There is the need to survey in known items and plot them into a CAD program. This will help the camp meet standards and plan for future construction. If you can help then please contact Greg at 319-465-5916, ext. 2500 or E-mail greg@campcourageous.org. Thank you to Janet Rater for inviting camp to give a program to the Cedar Rapids PEO II. This wonderful group of ladies was an absolute delight. Many have been involved in camp for years, for some it was there first experience with Camp Courageous. It was a real treat to spend time with these ladies. This group has given many hours in their labor of love for Camp Courageous. Thank you to Karen Thomas for giving Camp Courageous the opportunity to present its program to the Maquoketa Woman’s Club. This wonderful group of ladies brought all kinds of needed items for the camp to their meeting. Karen Thomas is the mother of Dawn Roe (Brad) of the Monticello Cone Shop…all great camp supporters! A special thank you to Mary Kay Flenker (far left) at whose home the meeting was held… we share a love for the same artist, Norman Rockwell. 15 In Memory of… Camp Courageous’ sincere sympathy goes out to the family of Helen Hogan, who passed away March 18, 2007. I first met Helen in Dr. Earl DeShaw’s office in Monticello in 1980. She was Dr. DeShaw’s long time nurse and secretary. A very dedicated lady, she could always be seen walking to work, the grocery store, bank, post office, or church. As Dr. DeShaw transitioned from the medical profession to being the founder of the Camp Courageous Perpetual Fund, Helen also transitioned. There was the move from the office on First to the office on the second floor of the DeShaw home on Grand Street. Helen did much of the typing and bookkeeping of the early years for the Perpetual Fund. Dr. DeShaw was always a pusher to accomplish things, and Helen, along with his wife, Selma, were always behind the scenes being his best workers and supporters. Helen would send dozens of letters and keep a meticulous card system on donors and potential donors to the Perpetual Fund. Helen always took care of the home front for the DeShaws when they began to spend their winters in Arizona. After Dr. DeShaw’s death, Helen shifted gears and continued to volunteer for camp doing many mailings from her home. It seemed like we could never give her too much work. Helen was a wonderful lady who touched the lives of many in her life...more than she ever realized. She will be dearly missed. 16 Joan Schroeder - In honor of Jim & Jan Young’s wedding anniversary Wayne Mackeprang - In memory of Darlyne Dierks Shirley Mohr - In honor of Jim & Janice Young’s 50th wedding anniversary Betty Nims - In memory of Mary Jane Hopkins Aberdeen Parker - In memory of Allan Van Horn Juleanne Parker - In memory of Henry Lamp Roger and Patty Petersen Joyce Runge Keith and Carol Skiff - In memory of Nancy Winn Dines Marilyn Skiff - In memory of Nancy Winn Dines Dan and Marlys Smith - In memory of Janice Hankemeier Theo and Darrell Smith - In memory of Donna Colshen Ed and Dorothy Traninger - In memory of Donna Colshen Robert and Eldona Turney - In memory of Jean Bigwood and Fern Smith - In honor of Margaret Peska’s 85th birthday Dwaine and Donna VanBuer - In memory of Frances Koch Clifford and Betty Jane Voss - In memory of Thekla Nielsen, Louis Sullivan, Mrs. Darlyne Diercks, and Tom Hansen John and Patricia Wenzel - In memory of Louis Sullivan and Allan Van Horn Laurence and Bernice Witt - In memory of Allan Van Horn Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies Elvira Zion Lutheran Church Women Knight of Columbus Auxillary Nestle Purina Company The Estate of Allan Van Horn - In memory of Allan Van Horn CLIO, IA Robert and Janet Mortimore CLIVE, IA Gary and Glenice Peck - In memory of Herb & Bev Kearns CLUTIER, IA Bernice Smolik - In honor of Leo Greco’s 85th birthday COGGON, IA Robert and Darleen Brokens - In memory of Norman Appleby David and Linda Carlson - In memory of Vernita Ryan Mabel Kremer - In memory of Norman Appleby Edith McRight - In memory of Orvie McRight Maggie O’Connor - In memory of Vernita Ryan Bob and Ellad Trumbull In memory of Norman Appleby Roy and Karen Wright - In memory of Nyal Boyse, Allen Wright, and Duane E. Manchester Garage Sale The 32nd annual Manchester Garage Sale for Camp Courageous is about to get underway. Just as Camp Courageous has grown from 211 campers during the summer of 1974 to over 5,000 campers year-round today, so has the growth of the Manchester Garage Sale. The Manchester Garage Sale, Camp Courageous’ largest fund raiser, is run by over 60 volunteers. From 8: 30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 8: 30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, for six months out of the year, these volunteers give of their time to run the sale located at 913 East Main, in Manchester. The sale will open Monday, April 30th and will remain open until about the first week in October. For the six months following the sale, volunteers work on Manchester the facilities, constantly making improvements. The Manchester Garage Sale has been a win-win situation. People who have donated their personal items to the sale have had the opportunity to clean house, knowing their things will go for good use. The buyer has the opportunity to get needed items at a very reasonable price, and the camp has obtained items they need, along with the financial support the camp needs, since it is run on donations. The Garage Sale is led by a very dedicated committee. For these ladies the sale goes yearround, as they are constantly gathering things, washing and mending items, and doing whatever they can for the betterment of Camp Courageous. The committee includes, Marla Schiess, Honorary Board Member Jackie Snyder, and Vera Gienapp. 13 W. Main St 210th St E. The vehicle is in mint condition, from the engine to the interior. I have never seen a vehicle in such perfect condition. With the vehicle came a bag of teddy bears in the back seat for the campers! We cannot thank this wonderful couple enough for such a great gift. With the 15-passenger vans being a thing of the past, this vehicle could easily handle 8 or more passengers and fills a real void. With the warm indoor pool and cold weather outside, it has been a popular program. These classes are taught by camp staff, who are American Red Cross certified. This is the 19th year that camp has offered this program. This year Camp Courageous added a session of swimming lessons during the day for children who are Home-Schooled. There was considerable interest in this new class. Marginal Note: Do for others with no expectation of return favors. Dietary staff member Joyce Gessner has retired after 12 years at Camp Courageous. Her wonderful bakery talents will be greatly missed. Joyce will be spending time with husband Marvin and family, gardening, and sewing. Thank you Joyce for all your dedication and caring to campers and staff. Pictured at Joyce’s retirement gathering are (L-R) Chef Dennis Bayne with dietary staff Sharon Holub, and Linda Price with Joyce Gessner. Spring-Time Opportunities for Volunteering Spring is upon us and the maintenance department is busy gearing up for the summer. Last year camp had great help from volunteers with mowing, general repairs and planting of the flower gardens. This year the camp will again be looking for volunteers to assist in these areas. If you are the type of person that just wants to get out and lend a helping hand for a few hours, a day, a week or longer, then camp has tasks for you. As you have seen in past Couriers, the camp has been assisted by a great crew of volunteer electricians that are able to help when needed. The camp is looking to add a group of volunteer plumbers. If you or a group of friends would be able to give camp a helping hand just let us know by calling Greg at 319-465-5916, ext. 2500 or E-mail greg@campcourageous.org. 22 Melvin and Esther Weber - In memory of M. I would just like to let you know that Tami Peck has gone above and beyond for my children, Paige and Jamie Etten. My children have taken swimming lessons at Camp Courageous for the last 2 years. I have been very happy with the care they have received from your staff. My mother-in-law, Mary Etten, has been taking water aerobics at camp as well. Occasionally my kids have gone with Mary and played in the pool during her class. On Friday, December 29th, Mary and my children came to camp to attend the water aerobics class. Apparently, Mary was the only attendee. Tami told her it would be ok to swim with the kids in the time allotted for the class. Mary stated that Tami could not just sit there and watch them all swim, she jumped in with them. Tami worked one on one with both of my children. Mary said she was fantastic! She gave my kids encouragement and advice to get them to swim across the pool, to back float, to do everything they needed to do in order to pass Level 2. That was a tremendous feat for my kids. They are so proud of themselves, not to mention how proud their father and I am of them. Tami has really gone out of her way to teach my children the fundamentals of swimming, not to mention building their self confidence! I cannot say enough good things about her. Thanks to her one-on-one care, they are now signed up for level 3. I have always understood the importance of Camp Courageous and supported you through the many fundraisers held at the camp and throughout the community. I never thought my children would reap some of the wonderful benefits your staff gives to children. Please know that Camp Courageous is lucky to have Tami as an employee. She obviously loves her job and in turn goes out of her way to help people. Please be sure and give her the recognition she deserves. Thank you for all that you do! Sincerely, Lindsy Etten Marginal Note: Condiments are like old friends — highly thought of, but often taken for granted. if you are a federal employee, remember the camp during this year’s COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN. camp courageous #1592 23 Valentines Dance Winners: (L-R) Cal Brus and Tara Moore On Saturday, February 10th, the camp hosted its annual Valentines Dance. That year happened to include a special concert performance by the 1960’s group Jan and Dean. (L-R) Pictured are Jan Berry, KCRG personalities Ramey Becker and Bruce Aune, and Dean Torrence. Get info on the 2007 Cruisin’ event on page 33. Camp Courageous of Iowa would like to introduce you to our newest member on the maintenance staff. Cheryl Hunt of Monticello will be working the laundry area of camp. Welcome Cheryl!! IRAs and Charity Recently, Congress OK’d direct contributions from IRAs to charity. In 2006 and 2007, owners at least age 70.5 can donate up to $100,000 a year from their retirement accounts, and the gifts count toward the owner’s required minimum distribution. One gets no deduction, but does get a tax break because the money is not included in one’s taxable income, as it would be if one withdrew funds. Not only is this simpler than taking a distribution, giving the money to charity and then claiming a deduction, but it also can save money if including the payout in one’s income would squeeze tax breaks, such as the value of personal exemptions and itemized deductions, that phase out as income rises. Note that to qualify for the break, one can not give the money to a donor-advised fund or a supporting private foundation. As always, consult a tax advisor for additional information. Marginal Note: Children may close their ears to advice, but they keep their eyes open to example. 27 AUDITS, INSPECTIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS AT CAMP COURAGEOUS Since 1980 an outside financial accounting and auditing firm, who comes to camp for several weeks and goes through everything, has audited the Camp Courageous financial books. Over the years the IRS has also come to audit the camp’s financial books. It is the camp’s goal to do everything by the letter-of-the-law. The various audits have confirmed Camp Courageous’ way of doing business. Camp Courageous is also an Accredited member of the American Camping Association, where it has consistently received the unheard of 100% on its accreditation over the past couple decades. This full day evaluation covers all aspects of the camp from program activities, staffing, facilities, medical, finances, etc. It has been the camp’s goal to always achieve 100%. The Department of Natural Resources inspects and reviews camp’s water and waste water weekly. Camp Congratulations to Mrs. P. a Nine-Who-Care Award Recepient. With her at the award ceremony were Mrs. P’s family, Mike Ivins, Ramona Ivins, Ann Stahle, Luke Stahle, Steve Nicoles (KCRG), and Grynneth Parizek (Mrs. P). Special thank you to KCRG for having such a wonderful program to recognize outstanding volunteers and Karen Ultis, KCRG’s Community Affairs Director for leading this program, John Phelan, KCRG VP and General Manager, and to the sponsors. Volunteers Mrs. P. and Marvin Klebe of Lone Tree deliver a station wagon full of needed items for camp. We appreciate Mrs. P. using her garage as a gathering spot for people wanting to give things to camp! 28 tries to stay one step ahead of the rules and regulations, before they become the law. Thousands-of-dollars are spent annually on testing. The USDA and various health departments inspect the camp’s kitchen, food supply areas, and pool on a regular basis. They have commented that the Camp Courageous facilities are the best they inspect. All camp’s staff are constantly provided inservice and the opportunity to further their education, at the camp’s expense, to keep them on the cutting edge. This includes, for example, required CEUs for the medical staff. When growth in staffing has been needed, Camp Courageous has provided the opportunity for schooling. In some cases, over two years of college has been provided, to pick-up needed classes and degrees. This has included Amanda Gaworski, camp’s Assistant Nursing Director and evening and respite nurse who received her Masters in Nursing and Healthcare Practice from the University of Iowa and Shannon Poe, camp’s Respite Care and Volunteer Director, who pickedup her Therapeutic Recreation Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Everyone on the camp staff is certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and the use of the Automatic External Defibrillators (camp has six units). Camp’s rope course and adventure activies go through rigourous inspection by outside professionals. Camp also has an exceptionally good security system which includes many cameras and alarms to protect the campers, staff, and visitors against fire and other unique situations. Camp activities can be monitored over the internet, from anywhere in the world. The goal of everyone on the Camp Courageous staff is to exceed the expectations of the campers, parents, donors, and the general public. But they can do small things in a great way. 29 Making Quilts for Camp?? We are constantly asked about what size quilts work best for the beds at Camp Courageous of Iowa. Here is what will fit best with the camper beds: 84” in length 64” wide Materials that launder best: • Cotton • Permanent Press The measurements provided will fit camper beds perfectly. The camp will get the best use of your donation with these sizes. Thank you! The campers enjoy the warmth of the quilts and they make the cabins look wonderful. They are not the U.S. Marines, but this job will require your undivided attention for the entire week, starting in the wee hours July 21 in the Chicago suburbs. That’s where they assemble to make their journey across Iowa and where they officially close the week. The CUBS can provide housing to help keep expenses minimal and possibly could make other logistical adjustments. You would be joining an experienced group of riders, who do not see the crew as slave labor and also would contribute to some of the responsibilities of maintaining an efficient experience for everyone. This is their 12th RAGBRAI as a unit. Regular crew members, who work with a crew chief, can earn a bit over $600 for the week. You would join several experienced crew hands also expected to return. Some driving would be required and we need people 25 years old with valid drivers’ licenses for insurance purposes. However, there could be an opening for someone younger. Please contact Jerry Turry, CUBS president. Phone 847-675-6644 for more information or email jerry@turry.net. In addition, please include your current resume with your contact information, in a Word document, and send via email. After review of your resume, Jerry will contact you. Thank You!! 31 Artist donates to camp in Godson’s name Elizabeth Kinley, an artist from Monticello, Iowa, is donating a portion of her sales to Camp Courageous in honor of her Godson, Zachary Bollwitt. Mention “Camp Courageous” at the time of any purchase and a generous percentage of the profit will be donated to the camp in Zach’s name. Zachary Bollwitt is one of so many that benefit from the gracious and kind services provided by Camp Courageous. Zach has Angelman’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder (read more at www.angelman.org). Statement from the artist: “My brother Matt left our family business 3 years ago to join the staff at Camp and to be closer to his son’s development. Our family as a whole has always supported the camp. What a blessing it has been to have such a wonderful facility so close. It takes a dedicated trained staff to make it all work… to see the dedication of a largely volunteer crew pull together is second to none. There are many good causes, all in need, but picking this one was a close and easy choice.” Items for sale are original works, Giclee’s, poster prints, and related items, which can all be purchased at www.elizabethbollwitt.com or by phone at 319-480-1989. Some of these items can be viewed at the camp store. When purchasing, please be sure to mention the camp so that the proper donation can be made. Style and Technique: Acrylic on Canvas is the preferred choice for all original works. The style is pointillism… the placing of one color on top of another while allowing the colors underneath to closely contrast is what causes her artwork to look bold and complementary. 32 TODDVILLE, IA Mr. and Mrs. Robert Handley Larry and Betty McBurney - In memory of Ervin Bohrer and Erma Busenbark TORONTO, IA Nona Scheper - In memory of Ronald Schau TRAER, IA James and LaNell Dinsdale - In memory of Joyce Lenth Ross Hamilton - In memory of Clayton & Helen Hamilton Vernon and Dorothy Hanus - In honor of Ernest Pokorny’s 80th birthday and Ervin Bohnstengal’s 85th birthday Evelyn Powell - In memory of Onilee Ferry and Hazel Joens Margaret Young TROY MILLS, IA Harold and JoAnn Annis - In memory of Ann M. Thank You to All Helping So much would not be possible without volunteers! Thank you to all of the people that have volunteered their valuable time at the camp. Pictured on this page, and throughout this newsletter, are just a few of the many faces that have come to camp over the past few months to share their valuable time and energies. Jim and Shirley Iverson of Davenport are pulling turkey meat from bone. They did eight 20 lb. turkeys part of a large donation from Rosebud Farm owned by her brother Norm Brucer of Chicago area. Edward was donated to camp by Lynn Schaeffer, pictured above. Edward is a mature horse with lots of experience in the ring. He is just what camp has been looking for and should be thrilling campers for a long time to. We are very excited with what Edward brings to our program. This is the first group of University of Iowa Physical Therapy graduate students to volunteer for respite care weekends. They have been a tremendous help with campers. Frederic fills a big hole here at Camp. With Fred we can ride more campers who, for one reason or another, were not able to in the past. He is big and strong and he is trained to pull a cart. Fred is very much the gentle giant. He has great personality and is a joy to be around. Teresa Mulhausen , pictured above, brought Fred and his cart to us. Teresa’s son Ryan has been a camper for many years and enjoys our travel program. “A volunteer is not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” — Mimi Hull Needed: Visitor’s Center Volunteers An exciting new volunteer position is currently being developed at Camp Courageous. We are searching for “young at heart” individuals to volunteer in the new Visitors Center. No special skills are needed other than the desire to welcome others to learn more about the dream that is Camp Courageous. Work just an hour or two, or all day… flexible hours and days! Please consider sharing your time and talents. If you are interested in helping in the Visitors Center then call Becky Melchert at 319-465-5916 ext. 2130. Marginal Note: Happiness is like honey—you can pass it around but some of it will stick to you. 37 St. Columbkille School in Dubuque selects camp for year-long project The staff and students of St. Columbkille School in Dubuque has selected Camp Courageous as their 2006-07 school year project. They have been exceptional! This all started last year when the students donated money from their school store to camp. Special thanks to Jennie Weber, School Counselor, for leading the project and to Laura and Jim Mulgrew, along with Mulgrew Oil, for being major sponsors of this partnership. Mulgrew Oil purchased t-shirts that have a large triangle on them with “St. Columbkille” “Mulgrew Oil” and “Camp Courageous” at each of the points and “Making the Connection” under it. St. Columbkille School had a “Dress Down for Camp Courageous” day on January 19 Students brought items such as shaving cream, school glue, hand sanitizer, fine point Sharpie markers. Thank you again to the students and staff of St. Columbkille School! CAMP PHONE DIRECTORY Ph. 319-465-5916 NAME EXT. Camp Courageous does have access to some of the finest development professionals, attorneys, and accountants who volunteer their time to help camp...when help is needed. Flashback Photos! How can you or your group help? Opportunities to Help Camp Courageous of Iowa Make a Financial Gift You can make a financial gift to the camp using the form on the back page of this newsletter. Payment can be made with a personal check or credit card (VISA or MasterCard). In general, donations to the camp will be tax deductible to many. However, you will need to contact your tax advisor to determine the deductibility of your contributions. You can make your gift in memory of or in honor of an individual(s) or occasion. An acknowledgement about your gift can be sent to the individual(s) if you provide an address. Needs List (Page 5) Camp Courageous appreciates all donations of items that can be used at the camp. Further, the camp maintains a list of specific items that are needed by the various departments at camp. You can view the camp’s needs list in this newsletter. You can also view an updated list on the camps web site at www.campcourageous.org. Camp has been fortunate to have so many people donating needed items. These photos from the camp’s archives are just a couple of the many showing car-loads of items collected. So many times it was impossible to completely close the hatch. Cookies, arts and crafts items, quilts… we were grateful then, and continue to be today, for donations like these. Program Specialists Dormitory Plaque Volunteering Currently staff is housed in a somewhat primitive dormitory situation. It is the goal of the camp to build a facility that will house 20 year-round program staff, where each staff person will have their own room, with their own bathroom, desk, bed, and more. Often times staff, when on cabin duty, can be up for over 24 hours. When rest is so important, being in your own room makes a world of difference.
