Ear to the Past — Eye on the Future
BOTH A SUMMER SEASIDE HOLIDAY in beautiful East Devon and a bumper
musical line-up, Sidmouth FolkWeek is “one of the best festivals on the planet”
(Mike Harding).
For the first week of August each year, tens of thousands of visitors flock to the
coastal resort to soak up the colourful sights, sounds and atmosphere that
FolkWeek offers.
With a something for everyone appeal, the week kicks off with three top-notch
pre-festival special concerts with Pam Ayres, Steeleye Span and Port Isaac’s
Fisherman’s Friends in addition to some amazing festival headliners at The
Ham Marquee including Sharon Shannon, Show of Hands, Jon Boden,
Oysters 3, Le Vent Du Nord, Martin Simpson & Dom Flemons, Kathryn
Tickell & Superfolkus and many more.
The Bulverton, with its funky Betsy’s Lounge chill-out space, is the focus for
wall-to-wall roots partying each night with Seth Lakeman, Shooglenifty,
Blackbeard’s Tea Party and Mad Dog Mcrea amongst those fuelling the
upbeat atmosphere!
Established names are joined throughout the week by stars of the next
generation with our Folkadelia, Folk Rising Plus and Eye On The Future concert
series.
Folk Dance continues to go from strength to strength with fun and challenge in
American, English and Irish strands. The amazing US caller Carol Ormand will
be leading the American styles.
Dance Displays around the town and along the Esplanade celebrate a wide
range of styles, with guests including Folk Dance Group Dandari from Latvia,
Bampton Traditional Morris Dancers and two American sword teams.
Also on the bill throughout the week: energetic ceilidhs, family fun, the finest
from the tradition, informal sessions and performance opportunities, fascinating
talks and theatre performances, spellbinding storytelling and a wealth of
workshops. A truly memorable seaside festival holiday for everyone to enjoy!
This Taster Programme gives you an idea of what to expect all week at a variety
of venues around the town. There are Week long, Weekend and even Day tickets
on sale to suit whatever Festival experience you are looking for. On top of all
that, there are event tickets for individual shows now on sale. Pages 12-13
provide a diary of major events. (When you see an ‘A’ against a show in this
programme, that means it can be booked in advance, either online or via the Box
Office).

The centrepiece of concerts at the festival, the Ham Marquee provides a comfortable
seated venue for three first class concerts each day.
The evening concerts (Saturday to Thursday) are not covered by Week, Weekend and
Day tickets. All concerts are included in the All-in-One ticket. Where two prices are
given, the second is the discount price available only to Week, Weekend and day ticket

Boogie Nights @ Bulverton
The Bulverton remains the hub for
adrenaline-fuelled evening roots shows
and dance parties each night from 7pm
through ‘til the early hours. Last year’s
venue makeover proved a massive
success, with great improvements to the
party-focused venue. As well as evening
gigs, the venue plays host to Late Night
Extra ceilidhs, early doors sessions with
special catering/bar deals and the funky
Betsy’s Lounge dedicated to relaxation
and late night playing and singing.

another fine programme for the festival.
An intensive morning American workshop
series will be led by Carol Ormand (USA)
with a theme of ‘Dance Across America’,
covering a geographical range across the
States, looking at dance types and styling
by region. Expect contras, squares and
triplets from New England, squares and
circles from the Southern Appalachians
and Western squares and contras from
the Rocky Mountains, plus a range of
dances from the Midwest.
The English workshops will be led by
Andrew Swaine, whose ‘Rediscovering
English Country Dancing’ series makes
sense of the birth of the rebellious,
accessible, class boundary-shattering
dance craze that ultimately swept Europe
(and we're still dancing today!): English
Country Dancing.
In the afternoons, expect variety with
Early Dance and Music workshops, simple
Scottish country dance, Irish set dance,
and complete beginners workshops, plus
some gentler English afternoon workshops. Come and try your hand at calling
and dancing American Squares, with
Geoff Cubitt, with music from Linda
Game and friends.
The evenings are for fun. Stowford Rise
evenings feature American dances, The
Playford Ball, IVFDF Goes To Sidmouth and
Irish Set dance with Gerard Butler. A
range of dances also take place in town

Dance Displays
The British Isles has a rich and diverse
range of dance traditions, including
everything from Cotswold and Border to
North West, Clog Stepping and Rapper,
Molly and Longsword. FolkWeek
showcases many of these styles in
Processions, Chance To Meets and
displays around the town and along the
seafront, the legendary John Gasson Jig
Competition and special events held
throughout the week at a number of
venues, including a special show paying
tribute to Roy Dommett this year, plus
Dance Spectaculars in Connaught
Gardens and Blackmore Dance Marquee.
Wednesday night offers a change from
the usual Morris theme with an American
Party night, at Blackmore Gardens,

Folk Dance Group Dandari join us

Eye On The Future
Sidmouth FolkWeek has some exciting
programme plans for young people, both
as performers, in the Eye On The Future
Concerts and Folk Rising Plus series, and
as participants!
Shooting Roots is the folk arts
organisation run by and for young
people, and born at Sidmouth, offering
workshops, performances and activities
for everyone aged 12-17.
‘...a really welcoming, accepting
atmosphere for anyone, of any ability,
any background, any interests.’
Get stuck in to music-making,
dancing, theatre and more. Look out for
sessions, dance-outs, games and guest
tutors to boot. Workshops are led by
some of the brightest and best young
folk artists around – prize-winning
dancers, musicians, theatre-makers and
crafts-people. What’s more, most of
them were Shooting Roots participants
themselves not so long ago.
Whatever your discipline, whatever
your level, you’ll get so much out of your
time with Shooting Roots – learning
loads, meeting like-minded people and
having more fun than you imagined
possible! There’s also the opportunity to
showcase the awesome skills you’ve
picked up in workshops at a special
Manor Pavilion show. Come and get

The beautiful Peacock Gardens will
once again be the base for our great
Craft Village, with its growing reputation
for high quality, eclectic arts and crafts
from around the South West. In 2016,
we also offer a few added extras from
further afield.
Open daily, the Craft Village offers
the opportunity to browse and buy
something just that little bit different, as
well as being a great meeting place,
with Café Dish as a hub, with its
accessible location right next to
Blackmore Gardens, in the centre of
town.
Right at the heart of the action, be
sure to visit the accessible and airy
Music Fair in Blackmore Gardens with
everything from penny whistles to handcrafted instruments, and a wealth of CDs
from festival artists and beyond.

Keeping The Tradition
For 60 years, the Festival in Sidmouth has been a
vibrant and innovative event in the cultural life of
the town, and in the national folk music and
dance calendar.
The town-based festival has an array of events
reflecting the diversity of the folk arts, including
dance, song, music and storytelling. The
continuation of the tradition has always been a
priority for FolkWeek and this is reflected in the
huge variety of workshops for both adults and
children.
By becoming a member of the Friends of
Sidmouth FolkWeek, you would help to make a
contribution to the continued existence of the
Festival and towards its future development. The
money raised is put into a fund administered by
Sidmouth FolkWeek Limited, a registered charity

Where is Sidmouth?
Sidmouth is on the East Devon ‘Jurassic’
Coast, just a few miles from junction 30
of the M5. The nearest stations are at
Exeter or Honiton with regular bus

Transport and Parking
Car parks are available at the Cricket
and Rugby Clubs and Bedford Lawn (all
festival sponsors), as well as the Ham
and Manor Road. The Official Festival
Car Park is next to the Bulverton
Marquee: a short walk down the hill
takes you to the Campsite bus stop
and into town.
The Festival Buses provide a timetabled
service from the Campsite (near to
Bulverton Marquee) to the Esplanade,
with a special service to and from
Stowford Community Centre for main
evening Social dances.
Accommodation
The Festival Campsite is available to
All In One, Week, Weekend, Day and
Event Ticket holders for the period
covered by the ticket, if booked in
advance. Anyone else can book space on
the Campsite by purchasing at the NonTicket (NT) rate. Children under 16 must
be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Camping is free for children 5 and under.
The Campsite is open from noon on
Wednesday 27th July to noon on
Saturday 6th August.
Access for Disabled People
We aim to make FolkWeek as accessible
as possible to all people with disabilities.
Wheelchair access is available at most
venues, and our volunteer stewards can
assist with any particular needs. Free of
charge Carers tickets are available on
application.

Volunteers
FolkWeek depends upon volunteers to
perform a variety of tasks – from
checking tickets to car park duties, from
backstage to box office, and much more!
If you want to help support the Festival in
these areas, then please apply through
the website. Volunteers normally work up
to 5 hours a day and in exchange receive
a Week Ticket and free camping. We still
have vacancies for volunteers. Follow the
link on the website for more information,
and download and complete the
application form. But don’t leave it too
long!
Festival Programme
This contains a comprehensive
list of all FolkWeek events, including
venues and many events not mentioned
in this Taster Programme, plus workshop
details, artist biographies, venue information and much more. Price £6. One
free copy of the Festival Programme per
All In One or Week Ticket booking will be
sent in early July – extra free copies for
these ticket holders can be collected on
arrival in Sidmouth.
There is also a Children’s Festival

Give admission to all events at the Festival,
space permitting, except Pre-Festival Events
for which there is a substantial discount.
You get priority entry to the Ham Marquee
Evening Concerts, as long as you arrive at
least 10 minutes before the start of the event.
For all events, All-in-One Ticket holders have
priority over customers paying at the door, up
to 10 minutes before the start of the event.

All-in-One, Week, Weekend and Day Tickets will not be
sent through the post. A receipt will be sent and this can
be exchanged for tickets on arrival in Sidmouth.

events will take place, or any artists will perform at any
particular time, or at all. We will, however, make every
effort to carry out the programme as advertised. See

Children’s Prices
Prices for events in this Taster Programme for
children (6–17) are half the adult price shown,
rounded up to the nearest £ where necessary.
Children under 5 go free. Children under 12
(and Youths under 16 for Bulverton Late Night
