exciting opportunities for Civil Engineering apprentices
The Apprenticeship Programme
The apprenticeship programme will be between 2-3 years depending on previous experience.
On this Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship you’ll learn all the skills you need to assist with
the preparation and delivery of technical solutions to engineering problems. You will learn how to
liaise between the engineers, management and operatives in a Highways Environment, and
undertake activities such as preparing technical designs, drawings and documentation including
setting out, site measurements, quality control and checking and reporting on progress. Following
the apprenticeship programme we would expect you to have developed skills in:












Working independently using your own initiative
Principles of highway management and maintenance
Understand safe working practices, Health and Safety and CDM regulations within the work
environment
Using CAD design tools
Information, quantities and communicating with others
Building methods and construction technology
Mathematics for civil engineers
Planning and design process and environmental considerations
Using specific Information technology solutions used within the contract
Commercial awareness
Supervisory skills
Managing excavation and plant
Apprenticeship Training Programme
On this apprenticeship programme you will complete an Advanced Apprenticeship in Civil
Engineering Technician with the CITB where you will gain:

Level 3 Construction Diploma in Civil Engineering
Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations
Level 2 Functional Skills (maths and English)
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
This will involve time staying away during the block release programme at college.

Location
Your base will be a Phoenix House in Ipswich but the role will involve travel to different sites within
the county.
Onsite Experience
In addition to the formal training programme you will receive hands on experience including
mentoring and coaching from experienced members of the team.
There will be a rotational work programme to gain experience of numerous different aspects of the
Highways Sector and Suffolk Highways business including:
o Designing improvement schemes
o Designing surfacing and surface dressing schemes
o Designing footway and drainage improvement schemes
o Planning and programming
o Control hub
o Operations
o Health, safety and environment
o Quality and performance management
o Commercial and estimating
Pre Requisites











4 GCSE’s grades A-C’s (or equivalent) including Maths, English and a Science subject
Good standards of written and verbal communication
IT literate
Able to work in a team
Willingness to learn
Interest in construction/engineering
Self motivated
Able to work under pressure and to deadlines
Customer service skills
Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
Driving licence
