THE HAIRDRESSING SECTOR FRANCE OSNABRÜCK FEBRUARY 23, 2010 Hairdressing : the market Almost 66 000 enterprises Revenues of 5,35 thousand million euros 162 000 working people among them over 118 000 employees Approximately 82 % of the salon managers are women Franchisees Over 6000 enterprises of the sector are franchisee . These salons amount to nearly 30% of the global revenues of the sector. They have an average staff of 4 to 5 totalling 25 000 employees. Occupational dermatosis due to dyes ¡ Dmt INRS N° 100, October 2004 2. Assessment and prevention of risks in Bretony ¡ Dmt INRS 99TC99 , October 2004 3. Hairdressing : an enquiry in Côte d’Or, Burgundy ¡ Dmt INRS N° 99 , October 2004 4. Prevention of breathing and skin diseases in hairdressing – 7 prevention cards ¡ Cramif, Institutions de la Coiffure, 2004 Prevention : a good professional practice As a result of the above enquires 7 cards were issued by the Health insurance and the Institutions de la Coiffure to cover the following fields : The risks of the craft The shampoo The bleaching/lightening The dyeing The permanent Prevention and care of hands Ventilation and cleaning of the salon Conclusions of the 2004 research 1. Hairdressers rank first in occupational dermatosis caused by PPD (paraphenylenediamine) 2. Breathing allergies, asthma and rhinitis, have been fully analyzed by the INRS Document quoted above and strongly recommends an early guidance when choosing the craft and early detection of any breathing difficults in young apprentices and students Up dating data A report on the sector conducted in 2008 CNEC (Conseil National des Entreprises de Coiffure), I+C, shows that occupational diseases represent : 1.5 % of the total periods of excused illnesss in the franchisee 2% in independent salons And 1% in home hairdressing New measures to prevent occupational diseases Two important measures have been taken since 2004 : A full day education for employers on the French compulsory document on prevention « Document Unique », controlled anually by the Ministry of Labour A full curricula on prevention and good practices to be integrated in the initial vocational training They are meant to reduce the trend, increasing MSD which rank first, illnesses linked to nickel follow and diseases caused by solvents rank third.
