From the Director
On behalf of the staff and Trustees I
wish you a very happy (and very
much-needed) spring! We have
returned to our full hours of operation
here at the Historical Society and are
gearing up for a full summer of
programming
including
special
events, lectures, fundraisers, and even
a bus trip or two!
Our summer programming begins on
Saturday, June 6 as we invite you to a
special Volunteer Reception and
Signup Day. This is from 10am-12pm
and is free to all. We will be providing
refreshments and a light brunch, as
well as introducing you to all the
volunteer opportunities the Historical
Society has to offer. You will be able
to learn about and then sign up in
advance to volunteer at any of our
events or ongoing programming, such
as gardening or to be a docent. This is
a great time to bring a friend or family
member that may be interested in
becoming more involved at the
Historical Society and to learn about
our Mission and Vision.
Our next offering is a bus trip, A Day
in the Finger Lakes, on Wednesday,
June 17 (complete details for this are
on page 5). The number one comment
I continue to receive from you, our
May 2015
Membership is how much you enjoy
these trips and would like to see more
of them. Well, I am happy to tell you
this trip will be the first of four
offered in 2015. Tentative dates for
the others are: Saturday, September
19, Jefferson County Wine Trail with
stops in Clayton for lunch and to take
in a Museum and Sunday, October 24,
Fall Foliage with a ride on the scenic
Adirondack Railroad at Thendara and
dinner. We will also be hosting our
2nd annual trip to Syracuse in midDecember to see the Moscow Ballet’s
Great Russian Nutcracker and dinner.
If you would like to sign up for June’s
trip or pre-register for any of the
others, please call the Museum at
315.782.3491. In general seating is
limited to thirty, so signing up in
advance is highly recommended.
You will also see on our 2015
Calendar of Events (page 6) a number
of fundraisers including our History
Links Us Golf Tournament (for
registration see page 7), 3rd Annual
Estate Sale and Chicken Barbeque,
History on the Water Awards of
Distinction Dinner, and Run Through
History 5k. These fun-filled activities
are vital to keeping our doors open to
researchers,
visitors,
and
the
community. We hope to see you at
one or more of these events and are
excited for what the summer has to
bring. As always,
Thank you for joining us for another
year in history
Warmly,
Jessica M. Phinney,

Events Update
Chocolate & Cocktails
Wednesday, February 11
JCHS’s annual event was very well
attended with over forty members and
30 nonmembers braving the frigid
February weather to enjoy a large
selection of hors d’oeuvres, chocolate
treats, wine, hot chocolate and our
signature drink the “Tootsie Roll”.
The event raised over $1000.00 and
we gained four new members. Gary
Walts generously donated his time
and talent entertaining our guests with
classical guitar music. We extend a
very special thank you to April’s
Cakes, Cold Stone Creamery, Dunkin
Donuts, Eurocakes and Ronson’s
Goldstar Wine & Liquors for their
delectable donations. We also send
our heartfelt thanks to our many
volunteers who donated their time and
culinary talents to make the event the
success it was. Lastly, but certainly
not least, we would be remiss in not
extending our genuine gratitude to our
Program
Committee
and
its
Chairperson Cathy Pisarski. Please
know your hard work, time and efforts
do not go unnoticed and we sincerely
appreciate all that you do for our
organization.
Easter Eggstravaganza
Saturday, March 21
JCHS partnered again this year with
the Downtown Business Association
for the second Easter Eggstravaganza.
Although the DBA chose to hold the
Easter Egg Hunt indoors at the
Watertown Ice Arena, we still had
over 140 children and their families
here at the museum. While here the
children made three separate crafts,
enjoyed story time and were even
visited by the Easter Bunny. Through
the generosity of our Museum
Partners and Sponsors we were able to
offer this event free to the public. It
was wonderful to have the Museum
full of children and the sounds of their
laughter and joy breathed new life and
energy into this historic mansion. We
once again offer our sincere thanks to
the Program Committee and our
volunteers whose efforts and time
made this event a success.
Sincerely,
and games” and the “history of
papermaking”.
In-school programming will continue
at a brisk pace throughout May and
June. Several classes have also
expressed in interest in scheduling
tours of the museum before the end of
the school year.
The museum is always in need of
volunteer tour guides for both school
groups and adult groups. If you are
interested in volunteering, please call
the museum at 782-3491. Thank
you!!

Education Report
Welcome Spring! Welcome clear
roads! The weather during the first
three months of 2015 was
challenging. Snow, bitter cold and
more snow led too many school
delayed openings and closures. Both
of which impacted my school
program schedule significantly some
weeks. These combined with the
school vacation weeks shortened the
available days per month for
programming.
Even there were challenges; I was
able to present one hundred thirty
(130) in-school programs from
January – April. These programs
were presented in the following
districts: Beaver River, BellevilleHenderson, Carthage, Copenhagen,
General Brown, Indian River,
LaFargeville, Lyme, Sackets Harbor
and South Jefferson. These programs
were for students in Kindergarten – 5th
grade. The topics presented ranged
from: “cloth making in the pioneer
period” to “soldiers in the Civil War”
to “life without electricity” to “toys

House & Garden
The daffodils and bloodroot are in full
bloom and the tulips are coming fast.
That was a long cold winter. The
snowbanks created by the snow
blower did damage to the privacy
hedge. Four of the honeysuckles
should be replaced. I have been
looking at American Arborvitae as a
replacement. We need donations to
make this happen here as well as
along the south fence of the croquet
garden. This plant grows tall so we
could control the height. In time the

Daily Times would fade from view.
Thirty-five plants along the fence and
five replacements in the privacy hedge
should do the trick.
We are in need of mulch, grass seed,
paint, and painting supplies. If you are
interested in helping us with materials
please call or stop in for more details.
We survive on contributions and
