Annual Report 2013 - Watertown Area Cares Clinic
Annual Report 2013 415 S. Eighth Street Watertown, WI 53094 920.206.7797 WatertownAreaCaresClinic.org Dear Friends, 2013 Board of Directors Medical Director - John Basarich, MD (Jan. - Aug.) - Fred Gremmels, DO (Sep.- Dec.) Chair - Carol Quest, RN Vice Chair - Donene Rowe, MD Secretary - Sandy Torgerson Treasurer - Tim Beine, CPA Members Michael Grajewski, MD; Mike Scher; Rachel Powell; Rita Brafford; Nate Salas Ex-officio Carol Mertins, Jill Nadeau Our Mission We strive toward providing improved access to healthcare in the Watertown area, with a focus on identifying populations that are in need and the available resources. We will coordinate the compassion and caring of the people of our area to create solutions and build a healthier community. From Our Director As I write this letter we are beginning to see the effects of the change in childless adult Medicaid (0 to 100% FPG), the gap (100 to 138% FPG) and the Affordable Care Act or ACA (100 to 400% FPG). The gap is being defined as the difference between Wisconsin’s unexpanded Medicaid (0100%) and the subsidies provided for those whose income is over 138% under the ACA. We believe that many of the patients who fall into this category will remain our patients or become our patients as they file for the hardship waiver. At a recent National Association of Free Clinic conference, I learned that the projected number of uninsured in the US in 2019 will be 30 million. We are grateful and cherish your support through these uncertain times. Wherever possible, we are trying to assist people in the process of obtaining insurance so that your support will continue to go to those for whom insurance is unavailable or unaffordable. In other news, you might be interested to know that we piloted a new innovation in health care this year. We obtained a grant to train two health educators who surveyed each of our patients for alcohol usage, smoking and depression. They spent the last year educating and referring our patients for help in these areas. UW-Health Partners-Watertown was so impressed with our results that they hired one of our volunteer health educators. They are also looking to placing mental health providers in their clinics as we have done. Again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart! My patients thank you also! Carol Carol Mertins, DNP, ANP-BC Executive DIrector Medication Assistance One of our most successful programs is the Patient Assistance Program. Many free clinics use a majority of their donated funds to pay for medication. While we do pay for some things - such as diabetes testing equipment most of our patients’ medications are paid for by pharmaceutical companies. We use a computer program - called RxAssist - to generate applications and keep patient records. We received over $536,900 in free medication for our patients in 2013! OVER $2, 267,112 since 2008!! 2013 Ed Opperud Memorial Volunteer Recognition Awarded to Michael Scher & Geralynn Andrews Two of the clinics many volunteers were presented with the Ed Opperud Memorial Volunteer of the Year award. As always, it was difficult to select only two people, we are very fortunate to have so many amazing volunteers. The 2013 award was given to Mike Scher for all his hard work organizing our first - very successful - golf outing. Geri received her award for the many hours she has spent helping patients at the clinic. I was able to see a DNP (Doctor of Nurse Practice), who ordered the blood tests that were necessary to get one of my medications. She also helped me navigate the form to request my other medication for free. This was a huge help at the time, as the financial burden on our family would have been significant. All the people I came into contact with at the WACC were caring and supportive, and reminded me that I didn't have to feel guilty about using their services. I felt like I didn't deserve to have free services from them, as there probably were people who needed the support more than I did. I still have a way to go to get back on my feet financially, but I am confident I will get there, and then I will be able to give back to an organization that has helped me and thousands of others over the years. Thank you to the ordinary men and women, and the medical professionals, who volunteer and give their time without compensation. They are truly angels who live among us. They take care of those in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help with their health care needs.” Our 2013 Volunteers Geralynn Andrews Veronica Barrales Joyce Bartmann Dr. John Basarich Tim Beine David Block Dr. Barbara Bock Jozi Beauchane Tammie Boese Rita Brafford Larry Braunschweig Mary Braunschweig Dr. David Byrne Richard L. My mom has worked so hard all her life. She no longer has insurance because she is unable to work full time and not old enough to fully retire. She has hypertension, is losing her vision and is an uncontrolled diabetic. You gave my mother and I peace today. I cannot say thank you enough.”
