200 volunteers are needed, primarily in half-day shifts. In 2013, Knights of Columbus District 11
assumed full responsibility for coordinating this event and 7 KC Councils participated. Last year, we
had 17 KC Councils and 100+ KC members and family participate. We want to see participation grow
again to fully cover this event. Open to members/spouses and teen+ family members. A summary of
the volunteer opportunities is shown below.
Deadline:
Advance sign up required. Respond ASAP (by May 1st preferred) to ensure availability of
desired shift(s).
Shifts:
Saturday morning, May 23, 2015, 7:30 – 11:30 am
Saturday afternoon, May 23, 2015, 12:30 – 4:00 pm
Sunday morning, May 24, 2015, 7:30 – 11:30 am

Pit Captains: (30 needed)
Lead team of 3-4 officials for a single bocce pit. (10 pits are run at a time during the competition.) Pit
captains will be responsible for recruiting and training 3-4 additional members of their team. Pit
captains will be assigned (first come-first serve) to one of the three sessions.
Pit Officials: (90-120 needed)
Member of pit captain’s team running competition for one bocce pit. Will be recruited and trained by pit
captain or assigned by directors to fill in vacancies.
Brackets/Scoring: (6 needed)
Lead(s): vacant
This small group will be responsible for setting up brackets, adjusting for scratches, handling scoring
and advancement. (Under tent but will begin an hour earlier than many other volunteers.)

Escorts/Runners: (60-75 needed)
Lead(s): vacant
Responsible for safely escorting athletes to the bocce pits, staying at the pits as a cheerleader/ motivator,
and safely escorting athletes back to the staging area. These are good volunteer opportunities for older
youth or others looking for an event-only volunteer opportunity (no pre-work/training). We are also
looking for compassionate, safety-focused co-leads for each shift able to coordinate/track/mentor
volunteers.

Responsible for making medal presentations.
Sign-in/Shirt Distribution: (5-6 needed)

Responsible for sign-in of bocce volunteers and T-shirt distribution. (LA Special Olympics plans to get
T-shirts distributed in advance to volunteers responding before May 1st)
