The Horticulturists, with the assistance of volunteers plant more than 80,000 Tulips and Daffodils that are in full bloom for the annual Tulip Time in Topeka. The gardens span an area of nearly 20 acres. Stroll on the sidewalks through a meditation garden, rock gardens, many annual and perennial beds, rose gardens, and water gardens. There is also a gazebo, pergola, waterfalls, streams, and several ponds to enjoy on our visit. Great Overland Station and Lunch with the Harvey Girls April 14, 2015 TOUR INCLUDES: • Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee • Great Overland Station with Lunch with the Harvey Girls • Old Prairie Town and the Historic Prairie Village & Homes • Tulips at Gage Park • Deluxe Motorcoach Transportation • Kincaid Tour Director $89 PER PERSON TOUR INSURANCE: $17 Today’s Lunch is with the Harvey Girls along with a tour at the Great Overland Station. We will take a step back in time and let railroad heritage take over at this former Union Pacific Station. At the age of 15, Fred Harvey, an Englishman, immigrated to America. He had many occupations, one of which was an agent for the Burlington Railroad. As he traveled on the train, he became very disgusted with the way meals were served. In the spring of 1876, Fred Harvey took over the restaurant at the Santa Fe depot in Topeka. Preferring the term Harvey Girl to waitress, Fred Harvey recruited single women to work at Harvey Houses along the Santa Fe Railroad line from Kansas to California. Between the 1880’s and the 1950’s more than 100,000 women, many Kansans, proudly wore the black-andwhite-uniform of the Harvey Company. Old Prairie Town and the Historic Prairie Village and Homes Old Prairie Town and the Historic Prairie Village and Homes feature an 1854 replica Log Cabin with Blacksmith Shop, 1870’s Victorian Prairie Mansion on the National Register of Historic Places and 2½ acres of Botanical Garden. Every season brings a different beauty to the 2.5 acre Botanical Garden in Old Prairie Town. This peaceful setting includes Anna’s Place, a Victorian Reading Garden, a classic garden pavilion, decorative walkways, water garden with foot bridge, gazebo, 240 foot cascading rock rivulet, water features surrounded by 45,000 tulips and daffodils. Mulvane General Store is an old-fashioned mercantile that serves as their museum gift shop and visitors center. Kansas items, toys from yesteryear, souvenirs and unique gifts are available. Potwin Drug Store is where you can sit at the marble counter and order a soda fountain treat, and shop for vintage era candy! Tulips at Gage Park Today before departing Topeka we will drive thru Gage Park which features 12,000 tulips and daffodils, an 80 year old rock garden with stone walkways and a stone bridge. We will start our short journey home and reminise of the great day we had in Topeka, Kansas while Tip-Toeing thru the Tulips.
