 Gary Gold-­‐Moritz Chief Operations Officer
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service welcomed Gary Gold-­‐Moritz as Chief Operations Officer (COO) in November 2014. Gary brings a decade’s worth of non-­‐profit leadership to LIRS on top of many years working in the private sector. After ten years of experience owning, counseling, and managing a diverse set of organizations, Gary made the switch to non-­‐profit work at the Children’s Law Center in 2005, a direct service law firm serving disadvantaged children in Washington, D.C. There, as the organization’s first COO, Gary helped lead a staff of 70 employees, improving efficiency, transparency, planning, and morale during his tenure. Gary’s work at the Children’s Law Center kindled a commitment to working for change. Later, as COO at the Public Justice Foundation, Gary directed finance and administration operations as well as both the development and communications departments. Gary led the restructuring of financial functions to produce greater transparency and a more appropriate utilization of resources. Working closely with the executive director and the board, Gary also oversaw a reorientation of organizational culture towards a greater emphasis on their impact. Gary is an active board member for Free the Slaves, an international anti-­‐
slavery nonprofit, serving on their finance and human resources committees. LIRS is excited for Gary’s leadership in continuing the strategic transformation of LIRS’s internal operations, to streamline decision-­‐
making processes, enhance communications, and develop an organization-­‐
wide system for measuring impact. Started by Lutheran congregations in 1939,
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS)
is a national organization walking with migrants and
refugees through ministries of service and justice.
Working with and through service partners and
congregations across the country, LIRS resettles
refugees, reunites children with their families or
provides loving homes for them, conducts policy
advocacy, and pursues humanitarian alternatives
to the immigration detention system.
