Written and submitted by Zoe Walsh, 7th grader
The 7th grade Green Architecture class learned about sustainability and chose to plan, implement, and judge
a schoolwide art contest to promote recycling and encourage students to use trash in a creative way,
instead of letting it end up in a landfill. The theme for the competition is “Look Further”. Ms. Olesiak’s 7th
grade art students are currently studying relief sculpture as part of a unit called “Seeing the World
Differently.” The timing is perfect! Ms. Olesiak’s students as well as the rest of the McAuliffe students are
invited to participate in the competition. Detailed information about the competition can be found on Edmodo.
We will be sure to post pictures of winners and their works of art in the April 9th newsletter! CHAPERONES NEEDED FOR SERVICE LEARNING DAY APRIL 10
Have you wanted to do community service with your child? The McAuliffe community will be involved in a
schoolwide Service Learning Day on Friday, April 10th. To make this wonderful experience possible for our
students, we are in need of parent chaperones. The day will start with a check presentation assembly to our
Penny Harvest nonprofit recipients at 8:30am. If you cannot participate the whole day, please consider
helping from 9:00am 2:00pm during the service project work that will occur onsite at McAuliffe or at a non
profit organization. If you are available to help out on April 10th, please email our Service Learning
Coordinator, Sherry Beardshear at sherry_beardshear@dpsk12.org. BASEBALL TEAM STARTS SEASON WITH BACKTOBACK SHUTOUTS
Led by stellar pitching and amazing defense, the boys baseball team started off the season with a pair of
wins last week. In the opener, three pitchers (Jacob Thompsen 3 innings, 9k, 1 hit; Nate Dinges 1 inning,
2k, 1 hit; and Joe Lenhart (2 innings, 3k, 1 hit) combined for a 3 hit, 14k shutout over 4time defending city
finalist (3 championships) Hamilton. The Sun Devils (10) only had 4 hits (Jack Michalek, Jacob Thompsen,
Tommy Cummings, Quinten Crum) but all were very timely and directly resulted in their 4 runs. Nate Dinges
and Atticus Swigris both made great defensive plays in leading McAuliffe toward the 40 victory.
In game 2, against Randolph, the Sun Devils (20) duplicated last years' score against Randolph of 100 in
perfect fashion. Tommy Cummings, Will Lenhart, Quinten Crum, and Jackson Postal each pitched a perfect
inning in leading McAuliffe to a 4 inning perfect game. The big bats were Crum (HR, triple) and Grant
Stanwood (HR). Thompsen, Dinges, and Lunden Augusta all made stellar defensive plays. Through 10
innings of play so far this season, the Sun Devils are unscored upon and have faced only 2 batters over the
minimum. Two tough division games are on the upcoming schedule: Waller (home, Thursday, May 19,
4:00pm) and defending division winner DCISMB, away, Tuesday, March 24. Come out to root the boys on!

SPELLING BEE AWARDS!
Last week was a busy and productive week for our McAuliffe Spellers! Last Thursday, in the “City Orals”

9th place was Andie Walker, in 7th place Lindsey Weyant, and coming home in 5th place was Hanaa
Salman. Then on Saturday, the 14th, both Hanaa and Lindsey competed in the 75th Colorado State Spelling
Bee held at Sturm Hall on the University of Denver Campus. They were up against 270 of the top spellers in
the state, and Hanaa came home with 13th place overall! Way to go Hanaa! (Ask her how to spell

LIBRARY WORKSHOPS WITH PLANNED PARENTHOOD APRIL 13
Have you had The Talk yet? Yes, that one. Maybe you have or maybe you haven't yet. Maybe you're waiting
for the right time to talk to your kids about sex. Or maybe just the thought of it makes your stomach turn.
What if you say the wrong thing? With all of the technology and social media, it's time for parents to go
beyond The Talk. In April, McAuliffe is offering two great workshops to make these important conversations
just a little bit easierone for parents and another for students. Healthy Relationships: This presentation is designed to help students explore the main components
of a healthy relationship. Through group discussion the students will explore the following
components: trust, respect and communication. This presentation allows students the opportunity to
explore their own feelings and opinions about what makes a relationship healthy as well as some
potential warning signs to look for in their current and future relationships. Talk Is Power: This 1.5 hour workshop is designed specifically for parents, guardians, family
members and youthserving professionals that want to sharpen their skills around talking with youth
about sexuality and sexual health. Participants have the opportunity to explore their own values
around sexuality in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. We will also explore how to respond to
difficult questions about sexuality and how to plan an effective conversation with a young person. Sign up here!: http://goo.gl/forms/uvKNhLWvpy When: Monday, April 13th, 2015 6:308:00 p.m.
Where: McAuliffe Library (2nd floor)*
*Parents and students will meet in the library and then split up into separate groups. For questions about these workshops, please email Anne Walker at anne_walker@dpsk12.org.

IB LEARNER PROFILE TRAIT: KNOWLEDGEABLE
This month's IB learner profile trait is "Knowledgeable.” As knowledgeable learners, “we develop and use
conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and
ideas that have local and global significance.” This is the month for students to demonstrate their knowledge!
Encourage your children to view the PARCC test as an opportunity to show not only the facts they've
learned, but the skills and concepts they've developed as IB learners. Share how you have to draw from
many different areas of learning in your own work. At the end of this month, during Spring Break, can your
family learn something new about your local community? Or, if you are travelling, something about another
part of the world? MARCH ISSUE OF STUDENT NEWS!
