The Greenview Bulletin www.greenviewschools.org April/May/June 2015 In This Issue Dr. Janice Kunz Superintendent Mr. Ryan Heavner Principal Executive News What’s Going On Sports News News from the Halls Attention One and All Spring Forward into an exciting Finish to the year! As I look out of my office window, there is no longer snow and I so thankful for that. I am beginning to see some green in the grass; and on several days, the sun has actually peeked out. It has been too long of a winter again. I am really looking forward to the start of spring sports and watching t-ball games. For me, our kids always played softball or baseball. Getting together with friends and family at the ball diamonds was always a good time because we had lost touch during the cold weather. Too often I remember doing more talking than watching the game. Regardless, the energy at the ball diamond is positive and contagious. Whether we are cheering on our children or catching up with friends, the energy in the air makes spring my favorite season. The downside to the spring season naturally is that our kids forget that school isn’t over yet. Who wants to come in before the street lights come on? (Did anyone else have this rule?) Who wants to do homework when we can ride bikes with friends? Any consistency you can offer to help your kids finish the year with all of their homework completed and returned will be very much appreciated by my teachers. Setting up a schedule of doing homework at the same time each night (immediately after school, right after supper, at 4:00 etc.) is a great way to lessen the arguments surrounding those homework tasks. As many of you know, we used three emergency days this school year. That means we will move our last day of school for our students to June 2. As required, this is full school day. Graduation days are set for first Friday and Saturday in June. Right now I am making the finishing touches to our school calendar for the next school year. Once approved, I will get the calendar onto the school website, and I will share it in our final newsletter. Any coordination you can offer with family vacations and our holiday breaks is always appreciated. Throughout the year, I have shared fiscal information with you regarding Greenview’s budget. We are making some nice improvements at school, but there is still more to do and our budget is thinning. We will continue to plan out our purchases but we want to ensure that should we need additional money for our students or our school, we could get it. We are asking for your input on April 7 at the ballot box. I have included information on the pages that follow. Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me or any school board member. Happy Spring! Janice Kunz, Supt. FAQs Greenview’s Upcoming Resolution On Debt Service Extension Base Does Greenview District #200 currently have any debt? No. Over the past decade, Greenview citizens have not had to pay any additional taxes to the Greenview School District due to the sale of bonds. Greenview’s annual budget shows “$0” debt. With no debt, does Greenview #200 have any borrowing power? Yes, but it is very limited. Greenview has a current Debt Service Extension Base of $24,843. What does Debt Service Extension Base (DSEB) mean? Debt Service Extension Base is the amount of money the district can levy for principal and interest in a single year. In other words, it’s the school’s annual loan payment. It cannot exceed (the Debt Service Extension Base) currently $24,843. What does that mean for the district? Currently Greenview CUSD #200 cannot borrow for larger ticket items beyond the $24, 843 Debt Service base amount. Items or equipment needed beyond the scope of the budget and/or the debt service extension base cannot be purchased. What amount would the school district like the Debt Service Extension Base to be increased to? Greenview CUSD #200 is seeking to increase the Debt Service Extension Base amount to $300,000. This amount will provide additional funds for larger ticket items and it will offer the district a fiscal safety net for other educational needs. If Greenview CUSD 200 has a $300,000 Debt Service Extension Base, are they going to borrow the full amount? The Board plans to borrow only the amount needed to cover costs for the district and its the students. Their intention is not to borrow without purpose. Why are we talking about the Debt Service Extension Base now? The district’s budget has been dwindling over the years, and we have been making repairs but we may need assistance to pay for larger ticket items. We cannot increase our borrowing power without getting voter approval, and we do not want to put our students and school district at risk. We want to have a fiscal safety net in place should we need larger ticket items or money to cover additional district costs. What can the Greenview School Board purchase with the money? The district can consider whatever the students or district needs but, the School Board votes to approve these purchases. The Greenview School Board’s plan is to try to pay for whatever items possible using the money in the budget. With the uncertainty of state funding and the age of some of our equipment, we do not know how much our budget can handle at one time. Will the district need to make some higher ticket purchases? Yes, the district is monitoring its boilers and its roof at the current time. If the resolution passes, will taxes go up? Taxes go up only after the Greenview School Board approves the purchase and the sale of bonds occurs. How much will this cost me? The tax increase for each household varies based on the value of your property or home and the Debt Service Extension Base (DSEB). Included at the conclusion of this FAQ is the tax summary sheet to guide you. Where can I find more information on this? Look at the district’s website www.greenviewschools.org for the PowerPoint regarding the Debt Service or contact Supt. Kunz for other information. Also feel free to contact your Greenview School Board members. What will the Resolution look like on the ballot? Shall the debt service extension base under the Property Tax Extension Law for Greenview Community Unit School District Number 200, Menard and Logan Counties, Illinois, for payment of principal and interest on limited bonds be increased from $24,843 to $300,000 for the 2015 levy year and all subsequent levy years, such debt service extension base to be increased each year by the lesser of 5% or the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index during the 12 month calendar year preceding the levy year? When is the election? The election is April 7, 2015. What could the proposed tax increases look like? 2013 E.A.V. : $35,043,110 DSEB $100,000 $200,000 $300,000 Avg. The Dawg Pound PTO is in full force this year and needs your support! Many events are planned for the 2014-2015 school year with several new and exciting events in the works to entertain and delight families. Support from parents is greatly needed and appreciated in order to help make this year’s activities a success. Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. They typically last one hour and are held in the HS Library. Children are welcome to attend meetings. If you are unable to attend meetings but still want to be in the know, then please pass on your email and/or phone number, and you can receive meeting minutes and text messages regarding important PTO information. Please contact Cynthia Wilcoxon at cwilcoxon928@gmail.com or by phone at (217) 899-5490 for questions, comments or to be added to the PTO parent list. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to a fun and exciting school year! Thanks to all parents that are sending in money for lunch card accounts. Students will receive notices when balances are negative or getting low. One request is that when money is sent in for your student's account please include their first and last name. This will help us to get the funds on the correct account. If the funds are to be split between multiple students please indicate the amounts to go to each student. Thanks in advance for your help. News from the Elementary Reading Room Each month this year the elementary classrooms will be focusing on one reading strategy for that whole month. Here are some ways that you can reinforce this strategy at home: April’s focus will be: Inferring Good readers can take what they know and what is written to read between the lines. A good reader can also combine their background knowledge with clues from the text to predict, conclude, make judgments, and interpret. Questions to ask your readers: ●Why did the author write the story in that way? ●Why do you think the character feels that way? ●Why did the character do that? ●Why did you think that would happen? May’s focus will be: Visualizing Good readers create pictures in their minds as they read. Questions to ask you readers: ●What did you picture as you read this paragraph or story? ●When reading this story did you make pictures in your head? ●How did these pictures help you understand the story better? ●What do I hear, feel, taste, or smell? Activities for your readers to do: ● Draw a picture of what they visualized. ● Sculpt what they saw out of play dough. ●Act out what they visualized. Box Tops for Education Greenview School continues to collect Box Tops for Education. Please save the box tops from marked merchandise. Tape or glue ten box tops to a piece of paper labeled with students' NAME and GRADE for the student to earn a "buck", which can be redeemed at the "Box Top Store" held periodically in the cafeteria during lunch break. Students can shop for a token prize according to how many "bucks" they have turned in. If you do not have a child in school and would like to donate, box tops can be left in the grade school office. The students love the Box Top Store. This fundraiser is a direct cash deposit into our school system. Each box top redeemed is worth a dime and our school has collected up to $1,000 per year. Items donated to the Box Top Store would be appreciated and can be left in the office. Thank you to those who have already donated. Campbell labels are also collected. This is a separate fundraiser and is not used for purchase at the Box Top store. The labels collected are used to purchase items for our school that are selected from the Campbell's catalog. This is video is on HANDS ONLY CPR. Public Act 097-0715, effective June 28, 2012, recommends training for students grades 6 through 8, as part of the schools safety education curriculum. Schools may choose to provide this training. Hands Only CPR is recommended for teens or adults who experience sudden collapse. There are several web sites available with this information. Among them are the following: www.heart.org/Hands Only CPR or http:www.isbe.state il.us school_health.htm #cpr. This video emphasizes the importance of CPR skills for people who have not taken an official CPR class. Anyone can do it and save a life. Elementary Computer News Terrific Typing! Students in grades 2 through 5 have been working on their keyboarding skills with a program called Type to Learn 4. Grade 2 was introduced to the left and right side of the keyboard and using both hands to type letters. Grade 3 practiced the home row position of asdf and jkl; with thumb resting lightly on the spacebar. Grades 4 and 5 really get into keyboarding by learning and practicing new keys with each lesson and its accompanying activities. These lessons are individualized—students have goals that are based on their own speed and accuracy. Hoping to see lots of students through Lesson 20 by the end of the school year, which means they will have covered all of the letter keys and punctuation. IXL Math Elementary students in grades K through 5 are using the IXL Math program again this year. The kids will be utilizing this program all year to reinforce math skills that they are learning in the classroom, in addition to reviewing and building on other math concepts previously learned. Most classes are working with IXL at least once or twice a week during their technology time in the computer lab. Parents, be sure to check out the reports online so you can see your child’s progress and their strong and weak skills. Encourage them to use this program at home too! Just click the IXL link on the Greenview Schools homepage and type in your child’s username and password. (This was sent home on a sheet at the beginning of the school year.) RAZ Kids Reading A to Z online is another fun and beneficial program that our elementary students (K-5) utilize in the computer lab. Each student listens to and reads books at his/her reading level. Then a quiz is taken to see how much information the student retains from the book. Stars are earned, which can then be spent on items for their virtual rocket and robot. We discourage rushing through—students should spend time taking in, understanding, and marveling at the facts in these non-fiction books. Be sure to ask your child what they learned in the last book they read on RAZ Kids! Parents, you can access this site at http://www.raz-kids.com/ . Enter the appropriate teacher username. Teacher username mmckinneyn aturaskya jschurman greenvw13 Classroom 4th and 5th grades 1st grade Kindergarten – plus LGonz. and MM from 3rd Grade 2nd and 3rd grades From there, click on your child’s button. At the top is a parents link where you can provide an email to see detailed reports on your child’s reading and comprehension progress. Safe Online Surfing Grades 3 through 5 have completed an Internet Safety Unit. Students utilized the www.usa-sos.org website to learn more about “Safe Online Surfing”. Each grade took a pre-quiz and finished a scavenger hunt in which they had to answer questions from various linked websites. Some sites had videos and games and others just had important information to share about keeping personal information private while online. Finally, the kids took a post-quiz to see how much they remembered from the scavenger hunt. The three biggest takeaways for most children were 1) if they are ever concerned or have a question about something on the Internet, ask a trusted adult, 2) not everything on the Internet is true, and 3) think twice about posting anything on social media – words and pictures can live on the Internet forever! Good advice for adults as well! IXL Math Milestone Elementary students in grades K through 5 achieved a monumental milestone on February 27, 2015. As a group, they completed an astounding 100,000 math problems so far this school year! Keep up the hard work elementary kids! GREENVIEW 2020 The school improvement team has created a survey for the Greenview parents, staff, students, and community members. We would like your input on how to make our school a better place. The survey will be available on the Greenview School District Website and Greenview School District Facebook page. If you do not have computer access, please contact the school (217) 968-2295, for assistance in completing the survey. Thank you. Students in grades K-5 will be rollerskating during the week of April 20th. Please make sure your child wears or brings socks during this week! Jump Rope for Heart Our Jump-A-Thon event this year, held on Wednesday, March 11th, benefitted the American Heart Association. Our K-5 students raised $4,529!! Many of the students received a duck(s) for their donations. The students enjoyed rotating through four stations in the gym which included long jump roping, short jump roping, partner jump roping, jumping Mrs. Sullivan’s “stinky shoe”, and an obstacle course for the younger students. The students also enjoyed a tug-of-war competition at the end of the activity. Each student’s name was drawn for a small prize between rotations. The PTO kindly provided us with a snack and Gatorade after all their hard work. It was a fun day for all! A special thank you to all the elementary teachers, Mrs. Sharp, and Mrs. Rector for all their help! Also a big “thank you!” to all the junior high students and high school students that helped out. Items Needed! Mr. Kossak is looking for old cell phones for his technology class. These phones will not be turned on or ever charged. They will be used to show how technology has changed through the years. If you are willing to donate any old cell phones, please contact the school or simply drop it off. Thank you! The school is also looking for donations of old yearbooks from Greenview Schools. After sorting and cataloguing the books, we noticed some years that were missing. These years are currently missing: 1986 1968 1948 1947 Any books older than 1939 If you know of anyone willing to donate their old yearbook(s), please contact Mr. Kossak at the school. Spelling Bee Champion! On Friday, February 6, 2015 the local Greenview Spelling Bee was held. Students in grades 5-8 participated. Abbi Joseph won first place by correctly spelling the word emporium. Congratulations Abbi! Ms. Winkelmann/Newbold will be taking the sophomores, juniors, and seniors to see To Kill a Mockingbird at the Sangamon Auditorium on April 28th. The cost of the show will be $9. We will stop for lunch after the show and return to school before the end of the day. I look forward to sharing the theater experience with the students involved. I hope to be able to share it with more in the future. Please make sure that your student dresses nicely that day, as I take my theatrical experiences very seriously.
