It is the day when Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This is an important event in Christianity, as it represents the sacrifices and suffering in Jesus' life. The crucifixion was the culmination of a number of events in Holy Week, including: the triumphal return of Jesus to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; the washing of the disciples' feet by Jesus; and the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. The crucifix, or cross, which represents the way Jesus died, is an important symbol seen on Good Friday. Hereunder is an obituary of Jesus which would have appeared in a newspaper in Calvary! Unfortunately, I do not know the author of the obituary, but thought it would be nice to reproduce it in our church newsletter. Jesus Christ, 33 of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the place of the skull. Betrayed by the Apostle Judas Iscariot, Jesus was crucified by the Romans, by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate. The causes of death were crucifixion, extreme exhaustion, severe torture, and loss of blood. Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His Father’s Kingdom and performing miracles, such as feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and healing a man born blind. On the day before his death, He held a Last Supper celebrating the Passover Feast, at which he foretold his Pastor Kennedy’s Message Birthdays and Anniversaries April Calendar March Administrative Board Minutes News Jesus Christ, a descendant of Abraham, was a member of the house of David. The body was quickly buried in a stone grave, which was donated by Joseph of Armimathea, a loyal friend of the family. By order of Pontius Pilate, a Boulder was rolled in front of the tomb. Roman soldiers were put on guard. Jesus was self educated and spent most of His adult life working as a teacher. National Volunteer Week is a time to say “Thanks” to the dozens of people in our church that volunteer in our church but also in the community and beyond. The Administrative Council of the First United Methodist Church of Minneapolis met for the regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, March 11, with 8 members present. Chairman Dale Henderson called the meeting to order. Pastor Kennedy opened the meeting with a short devotional. Jesus asked “Who do people say I am?” and the pastor asked those in attendance to think on this and consider how they may answer. Paula read ‘Sunday Morning Habit’ from the current Bible study book “Renegade Gospel”. Minutes of the last meeting was presented in written form. Patti moved that we accept the minutes with the correction “is now a member of this committee”. Seconded. All ayes. Patti Bertrand, treasurer, presented the treasurer’s report and commented that we are “doing okay” financially. Steve Baccus, chair of the Finance committee stated that he will have a full financial report in April. Paula Baccus reported for the Trustees committee. The Trustees have held their parsonage walk through and compiled a short list of needed repairs and items to be donated to the Rummage Sale. They toured the new garage at the parsonage. She reported that progress has been made with the installation of the security system. The lifts have been inspected and parts ordered. The opinion is that when repairs (switches) are made the lifts should handle our needs for a considerable time. The Trustees are working on a light study to use best use of investment and light output. They approved community service opportunities within our building with supervision. They discussed forecasting needs and funds for future projects. The committee welcomed John Darrow as a visitor and potential member. Roofs and fence repairs are on the list for completion in warmer weather. The Trustees discussed acoustics in Wesley Room and decided that professional assistance is needed. There were no reports from the PPR, Education, Youth, Outreach /Fellowship, Memorial, Missions, Love INC, or Worship committees. Gail Eckart reported for the United Methodist Women. The unit will be hosting the District Spiritual Retreat on Saturday, April 18 and expect about 100 women to attend. The UMW will be serving refreshments following the graveside service for Lynn Farrington on March 12. Kristi Ocker reported for the Preschool Board. Pre-enrollment for next year has begun, finances are in good order and the date for graduation is May 15. Everything is going very well. Old Business – Steve Baccus moved to accept the new format for the Ad Council meetings discussed at last month’s meeting. Further discussion was held as there are concerns due to the apathy by some in regards to attendance. The members of Ad Council are generally chairman of each committee and a responsibility is to attend Ad Council meetings, not only to report what a specific committee is doing but to plan and implement a program of mission and ministry in the church. After a rather lengthy discussion the members voted all ayes. and Pastor asked us to remember the family during this difficult time. Attendance is up some since last month. Both the Lenten Bible Study and Men on a Mission are going well. Several attended the Men and Boys Rally in Beloit and reported that it was fantastic. New Business – The upcoming operation of the Fair Stand during the Ottawa County Fair was discussed. Colette Henderson volunteered (Thank You, Colette!!) to be the organizer for this event. Planning must start in May and she wants to break down responsibilities as she felt over –extended last year. There will be a “day coordinator” and an “evening coordinator”, a person to do the scheduling, a person(s) to handle the money and charge tickets, a buying committee, and specific sub-committees to make salads and fry taco shells. Steve and Pat Baccus have agreed to take care of the money and Kristi Ocker agreed to do the scheduling and Colette reported that others have agreed to serve on specific subcommittees. Respectfully submitted, Pastor Kennedy gave his report. One person in our congregation has passed on. Lynn Farrington died on Sunday, March 8 and his graveside service will be March 12 at 2:00 pm Memorial services was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 27 at the First United Methodist Church in Minneapolis.
