WASHINGTON ST, #2159 SAN DIEGO, CA 92103 www.MissionHillsTownCouncil.org Board of Trustees Mike Zdon, President Belinda Smith, Vice President Carin Canale-Theakson, Treasurer Gavin Grant, Secretary Lara Gates Jasper Benke Bob Rast Sharon Gehl Bernard King Gina Barnes Christina Woods David Espinosa Penny Giacalone Jim Scott Anthony Nykos MINUTES Mission Hills Town Council Trustees Meeting, held at Canale Communications, Thursday May 8, 2014 6:00PM _________________________________________________________________________________________ Present: Mike Zdon, Belinda Smith, Carin Canale-Theakson, Gavin Grant, Lara Gates, Bob Rast, Sharon Gehl, Christina Woods, Penny Giacalone, Bernard King, Anthony Nykos, David Espinosa Absent: Jasper Benke, Gina Barnes, Jim Scott 6:00p.m. Called to order by Mike Zdon, President GUEST COMMENTS ● Former Navy SEAL, Larry Wilske introduced himself to the trustees and presented why he is running as a Congressional Candidate for California District 53. ● Kara Kaong of the Rock n’ Roll Marathon handed out route maps and presented the idea of having “cheer stations” throughout the route at each neighborhood. Prizes from $100 to $500 would be awarded to each “cheer station”. APPROVAL OF MINUTES ● The meeting minutes from April 10, 2014 were approved by the trustees. MHTC COMMITTEE UPDATES ● Membership: ○ ○ ○ ● The question of to charge or not to charge for membership was discussed. Wild Apricot is the system used to manage the MHTC member database. Currently there are two databases that need to be reconciled: ■ MailChimp - approximately 700 members ■ Wild Apricot - approximately 500 members ○ Anthony Nykos suggested changing the membership for everyone to start on 1 day a year, instead of it being whenever the member signed up. This would make it easier to manage membership. ○ The trustees discussed making the MHTC a 501(c)(3) organization, so members can write off membership fees on their taxes. ■ Bernie King offered to start the required forms to file and will bring them to the next meeting. ○ Lara Gates offered to bring the membership summary to the next meeting and someone else will take of the responsibility to manage membership. Financials: ○ The MHTC currently has a positive net income. ○ Membership dues are down from last year. ○ $22,350 has been raised this year, thus far. ISSUES AND ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION ● Pioneer Park Concerts ○ Concerts will be on Friday from 6-8pm at Pioneer Park starting June 20th. ○ The last concert will be on Aug 22nd. ○ See the full lineup with dates here: http://www.missionhillstowncouncil.org/page-1610142 ○ A general aggregate limit of $2M is needed in insurance for the concerts this year. ○ The concert t-shirt slogan was discuss and narrowed down to: ■ “I ♥ MH Concerts” ■ “Need UR $” ● Veterans Mural Project ○ The cost to install a mural at the blank wall on the east side of Mission Hills Florist will cost $6,300. $2,000 has been raised thus far. ○ The size will be approximately 8’x12’ or 10’x12’. ○ The trustees voted to give $1,087.35 to support the mural project. This money was taken from the existing arts budget. ● SANDAG / City of San Diego Uptown Bicycle Project ○ The Ibis Pocket Park visuals are in progress. ○ Studies show that Washington Street will be able to handle the diverted traffic from University after bike lanes replace a car lane on portions of University Ave. ○ A petition to promote the closing of the University Avenue ramp to Washington is being drafted and Anthony Nykos will talk to neighbors on/near University Avenue. ○ This will be revisited in the next meeting. ● Uptown Community Plan Update ○ On May 21st there will be a presentation on re-introducing the San Diego street car at St. Paul's Cathedral Guild Room from 6-8pm. ○ An update on the Mobility Element will be give at an upcoming meeting. ● Grant School / Pioneer Park 100 Trees Project Update ○ On June 28th, there will be an event by the California Urban Forestry Council to provide trees around the tennis courts and down Washington Place. ○ Sharon Singleton plotted a tree plan. ○ The MHTC is putting $2,500 towards the Washington Place tree preparation. +/- 40 trees. ● Maintaining MH Hanging Baskets ○ No action taken. ● Mission Hills Nursery ○ The nursery may be sold for about $1.6M. ● Goldfinch / West Lewis Pocket Park ○ No new action has been taken on promoting the start of phase 2 of this park. COMMUNITY EVENTS ● ● ● ● ● The trustees reviewed the results of the April 23rd Washington Street Cleanup. The trustees reviewed the City of San Diego’s request to distribute information on the University Avenue Pipeline Replacement County of San Diego Waterfront Park Grand Opening (Saturday May 17th 10 am to 4pm) Mission Hills Patio Open House at Cinema Under the Stars (Monday May 9th 6pm) Mayor Faulconer Mixer (BID) at the Wellington (Monday May 19th 5pm) ○ This event has been cancelled. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 12th. 8:10 p.m. The meeting concluded.
