In recognition of the 25th
Anniversary of Train The Trainer,
MAPT is pulling out all the stops
for 2015.
In cooperation with Pine County
Emergency Management and EMS,
this year’s event will include a
mock crash, reenacting the
Cottonwood bus tragedy.
Join us as we walk through that
fateful day, the steps taken by
emergency responders, school
district staff, and transportation
personnel. Following the hands-on
portion, we will convene a panel
inside to share perspectives,
experiences and answer questions.
A portion of dollars from that day’s
event will go toward a scholarship
in the name of those lives lost in
the crash.
This training is an excellent - and
rare - opportunity for all school
district personnel, including
superintendents, crisis team
members, and more.
Train the Trainer is one of the premier school bus
training events in the Midwest.
Drivers, dispatchers, trainers, mechanics, supervisors,
special education staff, and other school district
personnel will all benefit from this seminar.
This seminar is laid out in several tracks so you will be
able to pick and choose the topic that most pertains to
your position or interests.
Tracks are designed for School Bus Technicians, Driver
Training, Wheelchair and Wheelchair Lift Training,
Dispatchers, Management, and Special Transportation;
as well as Agency Updates from Minnesota DVS and
Minnesota State Patrol.

Did You Know?
Five years before the evolution of Train The Trainer Seminars, the Minnesota Legislature
approved a bill providing $50,000 for school bus safety training. The legislation was signed into law
by Governor Rudy Perpich.
In July 1991, the first Train The Trainer was presented at the Rosemount Technical Center.
For 12 years, Train The Trainer Seminars were conducted at the St. Cloud Holiday Inn.
In 2014, the 24th Annual Train The Trainer Seminar attracted a record number of attendees.

Unit III Crash and Emergency Preparedness
Presented by the Minnesota State Patrol - There are many types of emergency situations a school bus driver
might encounter. This session will review best practices and procedures for dealing with these.

Unit IV Vehicle Care, Inspections and Use
Each driver must properly conduct a pre-trip safety inspection each day. This session will help you to teach
trainees the important mechanical systems on the bus that must be inspected.

Presented by the Minnesota State Patrol - Learn about the laws, regulations, and recommendations for safely
operating a school bus.

Presented by the Minnesota State Patrol - What is the proper way to secure and transport a trailer behind a
school bus? Learn how in this session.
What resources do you have available to you to set up a top notch driver training program?
This all-day, basic training program will cover all units from the Minnesota School Bus training
program, and will assist school bus driver trainers in efficiently and effectively training a new school
bus driver in the safe operation of a bus in Minnesota. This is a repeat of sessions held last year.

How Well Do You Know Bus History?
• The North American “Yellow” school bus first appeared in
1939. The actual name for the yellow color is “National
School Bus Glossy Yellow” and is a federal regulation.
• The word “Bus” is derived from the word “Omnibus”, a
Latin word meaning “For all.”
• Thomas Built is the first school bus manufacturer to
achieve a “Zero Waste” status.
• The first double-decker bus was actually an 18th century
horse-drawn coach where passengers would frequently sit
on the top.
• The first steel body school bus was built in the 1930’s by
Wayne Co.
• Before 1920, school buses had cloth curtains rather than
glass windows.
• It wasn’t until the 1930’s when truck designs were being
customized into the more modern school bus chassis.

A panel of experts – Erin Levin and Bridgette Ramaley from Compliance and Assistance along with Jenny
Roth from DHS and Kelly Wosika from MDE – will provide insight into appropriate and allowable special
education transportation and how they affect billing IEP-MA to DHS and expenditure eligible for special
education transportation.

De-Escalation: The Art of Dealing With Difficult People
Presented by the Minnesota School Safety Center. Learn how to use calming and professional techniques
during heated situations. This presentation will provide you with communication techniques you can use
during difficult situations to keep you in control.

Supervisor Reasonable Suspicion Training
This course gives practical skills in the application of law and policy, as well as covers the issues a supervisor
needs to determine reasonable suspicion for the use of drugs and alcohol in drivers. It fulfills DOT training
requirements for 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes of training on controlled
substances use/49 CFR Part 40 in training supervisors in the detection of alcohol and drug use and abuse in
commercial drivers.

Leadership In a Time of Chaos - Superintendent Sheldon Johnson
At 3:30 pm on February 19, 2008 on a rural highway in southwestern Minnesota, a school bus carrying 28
Lakeview School students was broadsided by a van, killing four students. Sheldon “Shelly” Johnson was the
interim superintendent at Lakeview School District in Cottonwood, Minnesota at that time and will join us to
talk about the his role after the accident. As the former superintendent for the Monticello School District,
Johnson was also involved with a bus crash on April 10, 1997, which resulted in the death of three students.

The Minnesota State Agency School Emergency Support Team
Presented by the Minnesota School Safety Center.Learn more about the team that provides support to
schools when they are dealing with major school incidents which have overwhelmed local response
capabilities. Based on the nature of the incident (natural disaster, man-made disaster or school violence) the
team will provide support to an Incident Commander, a school official, or respond to the scene during
emergencies.
