April 2015
Dear Applicant
Deputy Headteacher
Thank you for your interest in this important role in our academy. I am delighted that you are
considering joining The Roseland at this exciting time in our development. The Roseland is an
innovative centre of learning, bursting with creativity and talent. Staff, students and parents contribute
equally to the huge success of the college, something we are very proud of. We are consistently high
performing at both county and national levels, although we firmly believe that there is greater potential
and room for improvement.
In February 2014 we were awarded a ‘Good’ judgement overall from Ofsted and ‘Outstanding’ for our
Leadership & Management and Behaviour & Safety. Our vision is simple, ‘to achieve excellence’ and
that is our intention. However, we aim to achieve this with happy, articulate, motivated and wellrounded students too. Our academy is a college centred on innovation and creativity, a place of
learning where teachers can teach freely and imaginatively and the students relish it.
The Deputy Headteacher role is an important post for our college and a fantastic opportunity for
someone to make a real contribution to our successful community. The Deputy Headteacher will join
our Leadership Team of Executive Headteacher, Associate Headteacher, four Assistant Headteachers
and Director of Business & Finance. This is an ideal role for a dynamic and successful senior leader
aiming to become a Headteacher in the future. Over the past five years at The Roseland, three Deputy
Headteachers have been successful in being promoted to Headteacher positions, something we are
very proud of. The Deputy Headteacher will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the college,
including supporting the Executive Headteacher in the realisation of the Trust’s vision of achieving
outstanding status for the academy and to improve the standards, attainment, achievement and
aspirations of all students. This is a period of exciting change for the college and an opportunity for the
right person to have a real contribution to our successful future. We are in the process of becoming a
Multi-Academy Trust with some primary partner schools and applying for sponsor academy status
following the invitation by our Regional Schools’ Commissioner alongside the DfE. We are in the early
stages of this development but are keen to ensure that the college’s leadership and management
continues to be outstanding as we venture into the new educational landscape. We have a fantastic
group of primary partners and have very strong, open and supportive working relationships across the
entire community.

The Roseland Community College is a great place to be a Deputy Headteacher because you are not
on your own. As well as the college’s strategic and extended Leadership Team, there will be the
wider leaders across the trust and our partners to share successes and concerns with. There are also
other Deputy Headteachers that meet regularly together to share advice and expertise.
Within the job description is a copy of the college leadership structure from September 2015, our
MAT structure is under development at present. Our philosophy is that everyone has a part to play in
the success of the college and that everyone has something to offer. What is certain is that we will
share our talents across the MAT. The key areas of strategic and operational leadership will be
determined by the individual strengths and interests of the successful candidate, as well as the needs
of the academy. The most important aspect is that we find an outstanding leader. It is anticipated
that the post-holder will have a 30-35% teaching commitment.
Our students are truly great – just ask anyone who works here. They try their best, they like to have
fun, they want to succeed and they are helped by a highly professional and talented team of staff
who are always keen to try out something new and who welcome opportunity.
Our governing body continues to go from strength to strength. Governors have wide-ranging
backgrounds and experience. They advise, support, encourage and challenge where each is needed.
The Roseland Community College is a great place to be. We are innovative and always developing.
We are excited about recruiting a Deputy Headteacher and can offer a variety of opportunities and
experiences that would be difficult to match elsewhere. I welcome questions from any interested
candidate.
If you wish to speak to me informally or arrange a visit to The Roseland, I can be contacted on the above
number. An application form and further information are available on the college’s website
www.theroseland.co.uk.
Letters of application (no more than two sides of A4, font 12) should summarise your relevant
professional achievements to date and provide evidence of your suitability and ambitions for the role.
I look forward to receiving your application.
Yours sincerely
Neil Wilkinson-McKie
