MEETINGS PROGRAMME
Our interests are of the industrial history and
archaeology of this north-east corner of
Derbyshire, an area with a very long and strong
heritage of manufacturing industry, from paper
products and ceramics through to heavy
engineering. An area where waterpower and coal
provided the energy, and where turnpike roads,
canals and railways were developed to aid
distribution.
The Society brings together like minds that have
an interest in the subject at whatever level, from
the curious, to those who already have extensive
knowledge.

David Amos: “A Brief History of Coalmining
Philip Riden: 'Canals and the Coal Trade in
the East Midlands'
Norman Taylor: “The History of the Pinxton
Porcelain Factory”.

Looking at the distribution of coal in the region
before the canals were built, and how their arrival
affected the market and thus the size of the
industry.
Pinxton porcelain has been produced in
Derbyshire from 1796 to 1813. The factory was
established by John Coke, bringing technology
from Dresden, the location of the famous Meissen
works. Was this early industrial espionage?

James Hawksley: “The Lea Wood Project”
The Dethick, Lea and Holloway Historical
Society were awarded a £63,500 HLF grant to
enable an archaeological, historical and
ecological investigation of Lea Wood. Hear the
results from this successful community dig.
Jim Nicholson: Chesterman Tool Co & AGM
In 1829 James Chesterman patented the spring
tape measure, and Chesterman’s tape measures
and measuring tools became synonymous with
accuracy and quality. At this meeting, Jim
Nicholson will display a variety of their tools.

Chas Arnold: “Robert Blincoe, Ellis Needham
and Litton Mill”.
Greg Lilleker: “The Story of British Rail’s
High Speed Trains”
A story from British Rail’s greatest innovative
period, told by the site engineer who had been in
charge of BR’s commissioning team for the HST.

David will present an illustrated talk on
Coalmining in the Ashfield area of
Nottinghamshire. It’s likely he’ll bring along a
few of his books on the Nottinghamshire Miners
and the 1984-85 strike.
Litton Mill, notorious for its cruel treatment of
workers, was established in 1782 by Ellis
Needham & Thomas Frith. The cruel practices
came to light thanks to a parish apprentice,
Robert Blincoe, who had worked at the mill.
