City and State Leaders Plant Pinwheel Garden for
Child Abuse Awareness Month on Hunting Park Ave.
The Philadelphia Children’s
Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to
bringing justice and healing to
victims of child sexual abuse, hosted
its 5th Annual Legislative Breakfast
on Friday, March 27. Area Legislators along with
representatives from PCA’s partner
agencies, the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, Special
Victim’s Unit and District Attorney’s
Office helped to plant a pinwheel
garden to increase awareness for
Child Abuse Awareness Month in
April. Each of the 1,892 pinwheels
represented the 1,892 children PCA
served last year.
Those in attendance included:
Philadelphia City Council Members
Ed Neilson, David Oh and Dennis
O’Brien; State Representatives Leslie
Acosta (event host), Pamela
DeLissio, Stephen Kinsey, Thomas
Murt, John Taylor and Curtis Thomas;
and State Senators Art Haywood and
Vincent Hughes. Representatives
from the offices of several other
local, state and federal officials also
attended.

Phone Scammers Grow More Brazen
Scammers would rather have a
pipeline right into your home rather
than take a chance on mail that might
get trashed straight out of the
mailbox. Hence the rise in telephone
scams.
USA.gov has a section on phone
scams and fraud that covers a
number of the common ones, such
as these:
* Slamming is when a phone
company changes your service
without your permission. If you find
charges for this on your phone bill,
call to insist you be switched back.
* Caller ID spoofing makes a phone
number show up on your Caller ID
that might encourage you to take the
call. For example, it might appear
that your bank or credit-card
company is calling you, and you might
be tempted to go ahead and give the
personal information the caller asks
for.
* Cramming is adding charges to
your phone bill, likely small ones that
you might not notice.Consumer.
ftc.gov has an extensive section on
phone scams, including handling prerecorded calls, unexpected sales
calls and, especially, knowing the
signs of a scam. The sooner you can
identify clues that you’re about to be
scammed, the sooner you can just
hang up without giving out any
information.Your cellphone isn’t
immune to phone scams. If you
enable the GPS on your apps, you’re
essentially letting people know where
you are, which makes you vulnerable.
Disable the GPS feature. Upgrade
plans can be a source of trouble if
you don’t ask about future upgrade
fees when you buy a new phone. Ask
lots of questions about frequency of
upgrade, potential down payment
and phone condition, and read the
contract carefully.
One-ring scams are one of new
ones. Here’s how it works: Your
cellphone rings once. The calling
area code appears to be a domestic
one, and the temptation is to call
back to see who it was. The problem:
The return call actually goes to a payper-call international number that
might incur fees just for connecting,
and more fees every minute.
Be sure you’re familiar with
international area codes that are
often tied to scams, such as 809
(Dominican Republic), 284 (British
Virgin Islands), 473 (Grenada) and
876 (Jamaica). Don’t return any calls
unless you know who it is.

Councilwoman Sanchez Rebuts
Morales’ Claims of
Election Improprieties
Councilwoman Maria Quinones
Sanchez’s campaign last week said
that Seventh District City Council
candidate Manny Morales was
caught misleading voters, as
Sanchez’s campaign released
inform-ation rebutting claims of
election improprieties that Morales
made.
At a press conference on March
20th, Morales made claims that three
Philadelphians who signed nominating petitions for Councilwoman
Sanchez’ reelection campaign were
deceased. The Councilwoman’s
campaign said that after further
investigation, they found that these
accusations were baseless.
“These baseless accusations by
Manny Morales are just another
reason why his candidacy is an insult
to the people of Philadelphia and the
residents of the Seventh Councilmanic District,” Councilwoman
Sanchez said. “When you couple the
pattern of hateful remarks Manny
Morales has made with the
misleading statements coming from
his campaign, you have a person who
is not ready to represent our city’s
most diverse district on City Council.
I call on state Reps. Angel Cruz and
Leslie Acosta as well as ward leaders
Carlos Matos and Emilio Vazquez to
follow the Philadelphia Democratic
Party’s lead and renounce Manny
Morales once and for all. His name
shouldn’t even be on the ballot.”
Morales said that three individuals
who signed petitions supporting
Councilwoman Sanchez’ reelection
campaign are deceased: Felix Aguirre
Jr., Carmen Gonzalez and Carol Brown.
However, Councilwoman Sanchez’
campaign said after further
investigation that all three were alive
at the time they signed the petition.
One individual, Felix Aguirre Jr.,
signed the nominating petition on
March 4. His father, Felix Aguirre, is
deceased, but Mr. Aguirre is still
alive.
Another individual, Carmen
Gonzalez, signed Councilwoman
Sanchez’ petition on March 1. Yet
Ms. Gonzalez also signed Morales’
petition, on March 2.
And the third individual in question,
Carol Brown, passed away last week
after having signed the petition,
according to the head of household.
The Morales campaign misidentified
the person signing the petition as
Carol A. Bowen, who used to live at
the same address but passed away
years ago.
In the interest of full transparency,
the Sanchez Campaign said that Mr.
Aguirre experienced a problem with
changing his voter registration when
he moved and was not registered to
vote. Mrs. Brown’s family mistakenly
believed that she was registered
before she passed away, and Ms.
UP TO $1,100 CASH
Gonzalez is registered to vote at an
older address, on Bristol St. These are
not uncommon occurrences,
according to the Sanchez campaign.
Councilwoman Sanchez’ campaign
said, like others throughout the city,
they approach thousands of residents
for signatures in public places
throughout the district during the
brief window of time when state law
permits candidates to collect
signatures. The campaign trusts that
residents are being truthful when
signing nominating petitions, though
occasionally people are mistaken
about their registration status.
Councilwoman Sanchez submitted
more than 4,000 signatures in
support of her re-election campaign.
She said that it confirms her
confidence in the validity of her
petition signatures. Councilwoman
Sanchez was required to submit 750
valid signatures from voters in her
district to run for re-election. March
17th was the final day for other
candidates to challenge her petitions
in court — which did not occur.

Aldi announces that it will
open in former Bottom
Dollar location in Juniata
Discount grocer ALDI announced
last week that it has completed its
purchase of 66 real estate assets
from the Delhaize Group. The
transaction includes the land,
buildings and leasehold improvements associated with Delhaize’s
recently retired Bottom Dollar Food
operation.
ALDI also announced that they
plan to open ALDI stores at 30 former
Bottom Dollar Food locations,
including the Juniata Park location
at 3975 Castor Avenue.
“ALDI has been offering fresh,
affordable groceries in Pennsylvania
and Southern New Jersey
communities for 20 years. With the
completion of this real estate
transaction, we are able to ramp up
our expansion plans in the region to
meet the growing demand for the
ALDI difference: high quality
groceries at everyday low prices in
an easy-to-shop store,” said Jason
Hart, CEO, ALDI. “While we are
excited to pursue opening ALDI stores
at 30 of these locations, we will
continue working with those
communities where we will not be
using the sites to ensure a smooth

In December 2013, ALDI embarked
on an accelerated growth plan to
open 650 new stores by the end of
2018, with the goal of operating
nearly 2,000 stores across the
country. ALDI also is planning to
invest more than $3 billion to pay for
land, facilities and equipment. When
the expansion is complete, ALDI will
have stores coast-to-coast and
anticipates serving more than 45
million customers per month. The
expansion is expected to create more
than 10,000 new jobs at ALDI stores,

1. Remove skin and trim some fat from smoked whole ham, leaving about
1/4 inch fat. With knife, score fat covering on ham crosswise, just through
to the meat, into 1-inch-wide strips. Place ham on rack in large roasting pan
(about 17-by-11 1/2 inches). Insert meat thermometer into center of ham,
being careful that pointed end does not touch bone. Bake ham in 325 F oven
3 to 3 1/2 hours until thermometer reaches 140 F (15 to 18 minutes per
pound). If ham browns too quickly, cover with a tent of foil.
2. About 30 minutes before ham is done, prepare strawberry sauce: Reserve
1 pint strawberries for garnish. Hull remaining strawberries. In 3-quart
saucepan with potato masher or back of slotted spoon, mash strawberries.
Stir in brown sugar, cornstarch, salt and orange marmalade; cook over medium
heat until mixture thickens slightly and boils, stirring frequently.
3. To serve, place ham on warm large platter. Arrange radish sprouts and
reserved whole strawberries around ham. Serve with strawberry sauce. Makes
24 servings.

Kitchen Diva: Egg-Cellent Easter!
By Angela Shelf Medearis
and Gina Harlow
The use of natural food dyes to color
eggs became popular during
medieval times. English kings
distributed hundreds of decorated,
gold-leaf eggs during Easter. Russian
Czar Alexander III transformed this
holiday custom to high-art when he
commissioned the famous Faberge
eggs as a gift for his wife, the
Empress Maria Alexandrovna, from
goldsmith Peter Carl Faberge.
Today, hard-cooked eggs act as a
creative canvas for children and
adults during the Easter holiday. For
the perfect hard-cooked eggs,
decorated with homemade dye,
follow the directions below.
NOTE: The greenish color around
the yolk of hard-cooked eggs is a
natural result of sulfur and iron
reacting at the surface of the yolk. It
may occur when eggs are cooked too
long or at too high of temperature,
or when there is a high amount of
iron in the cooking water. Although
the color may be unappealing, the
eggs are still wholesome and
nutritious, and their flavor is
unaffected.Greenish yolks can best
be avoided by using the proper
cooking time and temperature (avoid
intense boiling) and by rapidly
cooling the cooked eggs. Scrambled
eggs can develop a greenish tint if
overcooked at too high a temperature
or if they are left too long in a metal
pan.
Preparing Eggs for Decoration
Tip: Keep the egg carton to store
your Easter eggs in!
1. Bring eggs to room
temperature.
2. Place the eggs in room
temperature water in a large pot.
3. Bring to a boil, then turn down
to a low boil for 12 minutes.
4. Quickly chill the eggs in icecold water.
5. The eggs must be completely
cool and dry to decorate successfully.
6. Hard-cooked eggs should be
kept refrigerated and used within one
week.
Egg-cellent Decorating Tips
1. Use crayons to gently color a
design on the hard-cooked Easter
eggs. If you want to dye the crayondecorated eggs, the crayon wax will
resist the dye and the design will
show through.
2. Use craft supplies: buttons,
sequins, glitter, beads, pieces of felt,
or stickers. Use white or craft glue
to attach the materials.
3. To make your own dye: Combine
1/2 to 1 tablespoon of food coloring
with 2 teaspoons of white, distilled
vinegar in a large cup or deep bowl.
You can experiment by mixing the
food coloring to create a variety of
hues. Add water until the cup or bowl
is half full.
4. Gently place the eggs into the
dyeing liquid in the cup or bowl, using
a soup spoon to avoid cracking the
shell. The longer the eggs are left in
the dye, the darker the color will
become.
Happy Easter!

Petition is started to
Save St. Laurentius Church
Following last week’s
announcement by the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia that the St.
Laurentius Church building in
Fishtown will be demolished, a
petition was started on Change.org
to “Save Saint Laurentius Church on
Berks St. in Philadelphia.”
The Petition states:
received. Please heed the call for
help and allow “Save Saint
Laurentius” the opportunity to repair
their church so that more generations
can come and experience the
majesty within these walls. Please
help us stop the wrecking ball from
reducing this historic and cultural
landmark to dust.”
Philadelphians in the Fishtown
neighborhood built Saint Laurentius
Church with their hands to give their
families a place to pray, to grow, to
mourn and to celebrate. Many of
these families were new to the United
States and came to escape the
oppression of new rule in Poland. Under the roof of this beautiful
brownstone church, people shared
common woes and joys, new
relationships were forged under God
and a beautiful community grew from
that. Generations of Fishtowners and
newcomers alike have gathered here
to worship, to baptize, to confess,
take communion, marry and mourn.
What impresses me even more than
this magnificent church, is the strong
sense of community that this parish
fostered. When you live in a city rich with
architectural marvels, it is easy to
start to take them for granted. This
church meets the requirements for
historic designation, but the
Archdiocese executed their right
deny that honor. In their stead, the
parishioners would like to be given
the opportunity to accept that
designation proudly and be stewards
to their beloved parish church. Like
the generations before them who
invested sizable sums to keep this
church maintained and to allow for
the addition of a rectory, convent,
and school, the parishioner once
again have come together... this time
to save their beloved church. They
have formed an organization to do
just this, called “Save St. Laurentius”
and they have raised substantial
capital funds to do these repairs. Please do not let this beautiful
landmark and her community be
smashed to bits and fade from
memory. This parish is fixable. It can
be repaired. ”Save Saint Laurentius”
hired a Canon lawyer and has filed a
formal appeal to the Vatican.
They have raised the funds to move
forward with the repair work.
According to Canon Law, nothing can
be done to destroy or alter this
structure until the Vatican has
released its formal decision on the
appeal and yet, with St. Laurentius’
case still under Vatican review, on
March 22, 2015 the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia made a formal
announcement that they are moving
forward with the demolition. This parish, both the Gothic
brownstone and the parishioners,
deserve better than its unnecessary
destruction. It can be saved, and it
should be saved. The Archidocese
should not be allowed to move
forward with demolition until the
formal reply from the Vatican is
On Monday morning, there were
already almost 1,400 supporters of
the petition on Change.org.
A Facebook page has also been
created -- “Save St. Laurentius
Church”.
City Council President Darrell L.
Clarke (5th District) issued a
statement last week, saying “I join
St. Laurentius parishioners in
expressing my disappointment in the
Archdiocese’s announcement that
this historic church will be
demolished. After meeting with
members of the church and
Archdiocese officials, I was hopeful
that all avenues toward preservation
of this beautiful and sacred building
would first be exhausted. “The
public’s safety must always come
first, but it is my and others’
understanding that preservation is

Can Angels Save us?
From the Pastor’s Pen
Rev. David Scudder www.BethelChapelChurch.com
DaveBethel@gmail.com
Bethel Chapel Church
Corner of “K” & Lycoming Streets
In recent years there has been a
lot of fascination and speculation
about angels. It often involves
questions like: Are angels real? Is it
possible to see one? Why do angels
exist? What can angels do? Should
we pray to angels?
At times, religious people’s interest
in angels has gotten so intense that
it has even been called
“angelmania.” At one point in the
late 1980’s, five of the top ten
religious books were about angels.
Some of the more popular books
about angels make some amazing
claims. For example, some say that
angels can help you contact your dead
relatives, provide guidance for
important decisions, empower you to
achieve your goals, bring healing to
your body, and a whole host of other
outlandish claims.
What should we believe about
angels? Everything that God has told
us about them! One fact about angels
that you may have never heard is that
they are inferior to humans. That is
what the Bible reveals. In spite of the
fact that angels (for the present)
have abilities that we don’t have, like
invisibility, strength, instant
unhindered movement, they never
age, etc., God has actually placed a
higher importance upon men than He
has upon angels.
Let me show you how I know that is
true. Read this passage from the
Bible carefully. “What is man, that
You [God] remember him? Or the son
of man, that You are concerned about
him? You have made him for a little
while lower than the angels; You have
crowned him with glory and honor,
and have appointed him over the
works of your hands; You have put all
things in subjection under his feet.
For in subjecting all things to him,
[i.e. mankind] He left nothing that is
not subject to him….” (Hebrews 2:6–
8).
From the beginning of the Bible,
we see that God made the superiority
of mankind very clear. When God first
created human life on the earth, He
declared, “‘Let Us make man in Our
image, according to Our likeness;
and let them rule over the fish of the
sea and over the birds of the sky and
over the cattle and over all the earth,
and over every creeping thing that
creeps on the earth.’ God created
man in His own image, in the image
of God He created him; male and
female He created them. God
blessed them; and God said to them,
‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the
earth, and subdue it; and rule over
the fish of the sea and over the birds
of the sky and over every living thing
that moves on the earth’” (Genesis
1:26–28).
In other words, God made mankind
to be the master of this world, not

angels. That sounds odd to us, doesn’t
it? If we are ruling the planet, we
sure aren’t doing a very good job. This
world is a mess. Many animals are
dangerous to humans. We are largely
helpless before hurricanes,
earthquakes, tornadoes, and a host
of other natural disasters. We
struggle to keep people from stealing
from each other, and we can’t even
keep some people from killing other
people.
What went wrong? Sin is what
ruined everything. When Adam and
Eve rebelled against their all loving
Creator, a barrier was created
between them and their Lord. Life no
longer worked like God intended. It’s
been pretty much downhill ever since.
What is the solution? Do we need
to ask angels to intervene in this
world and straighten things out?
Angels are not the answer. The Bible
warns us against that idea. “Let no
one keep defrauding you of your prize
by delighting in self-abasement and
the worship of the angels, taking his
stand on visions he has seen,
inflated without cause by his fleshly
mind” (Colossians 2:18).
The solution is so amazing and so
wonderful, that only God could have
thought it up.
Since we have all failed to reflect
our Creator’s holiness, God has come
to our rescue. God came to earth,
became one of us (when Jesus was
born in Bethlehem), and then lived
the perfect life that none of us could
live. “Therefore, [Jesus] had to be
made like His brethren in all things,
so that He might become a merciful
and faithful high priest in things
pertaining to God…” (Hebrews 2:17).
Then Jesus offered Himself up as a
perfect sacrifice to pay the penalty
for our sin. The Bible makes this very
clear in verses like this one: “But we
do see Him who was made for a little
while lower than the angels, namely,
Jesus, because of the suffering of
death crowned with glory and honor,
so that by the grace of God He might
taste death for everyone” (Hebrews
2:9).
Since angels are under Christ’s rule
(see Ephesians 1:21, Colossians
1:16; 2:10 and 1 Peter 3:22), He is
the only One who can straighten out
our mess. Angels can’t solve our most
important needs because only Jesus
can wash away our sin and change
our hearts. When we put our
complete faith in Christ we will, “…
have eternal life. For God so loved
the world, that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes
in Him shall not perish, but have
eternal life” (John 3:15–16).

St. Laurentius is special and sacred

public is in no immediate danger, the
St. Laurentius community ought to

“The Imitation Game” (PG-13)
— Alan Turing was a renowned genius,
roboticist, code-breaker, Naziconfounder and all-around British
treasure. In the 1940s he led a team
of geniuses who broke the Germans’
“unbreakable” code and laid the
foundation for modern computers. In
Page 19

the ’50s, Turing (Benedict
Cumberbatch) was arrested, tried
and convicted for the crime of
homosexuality. This biopic goes indepth with a brilliant man’s struggles
against persecution.
The film won the Oscar for best
adapted screenplay, on top of a pile
of nominations. Cumberbatch should
have taken the Best Actor, but that
of course went to Eddie Redmayne,
who was in a different biopic about a
different British genius struggling
against non-scientific challenges.
Still, Cumberbatch’s performances —
and Keira Knightly playing opposite
— stand strong.
“Interstellar” (PG-13) — In the
not-too-distant future, crops are
failing, populations are dwindling and
the earth is enshrouded in a new Dust
Bowl. Matthew McConaughey stars
as Cooper, a brilliant engineer —
forced into farming for the past few
years, like everyone else — who takes
on a last-ditch space mission to find
a new home for mankind, somewhere
among the stars. Cooper and scientist
Dr. Brand (Anne Hathaway) must
travel through a wormhole from which
no one has ever returned.Directed by
Christopher Nolan (“Inception,” “The
Dark Knight” trilogy), this space
adventure has some cool ideas
Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Imitation Game”
covered up by stretches of boredom
and cheesy dialog. I couldn’t contain
laughter when Hathaway ardently
declares that love is a quantifiable
entity. It’s a long ride with some cool
twists, but the movie plows through
most of the emotional rest stops along
the way.

“Wild” (R) — Reese Witherspoon
plays a woman who takes a solo walk
for more than 1,100 miles of the
Pacific Crest Trail — for reasons that
aren’t easy to spell out, even for her.
There a sense that she has no control
over her life. She seems caught
between destructive behavior when
she’s alone, and toxic relationships
when she tries to connect. Based on
the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, this is
doubtlessly Witherspoon’s best
performance since “Walk the Line,”
perhaps her best on film.
“The Rewrite” (PG-13) — Hugh
Grant has a way of stumbling over his
words, fidgeting, looking around and

then saying something understatedly
clever or disarmingly earnest. It’s his
modus operandi. If he were a pro
wrestler, stammering through a
sheepish grin would be his signature
move. In this way-too-old-for-comingof-age dramedy, Grant plays a
washed-up Hollywood screenwriter
who reluctantly accepts a gig
teaching screenwriting at a little
college in upstate New York. First
he’s a jerk, but then he must learn
some lessons and repair relationships
with the various stereotypical
characters he’s offended with his
offbeat charm.
