C A L L TO MURALISTS: DAWN OF THE NEON www. neonnfk.com PROJECT OVERVIEW The public art committee of the new NEON (New Energy of Norfolk) District seeks muralists for collaborative large scale public art projects. In the community-oriented spirit of the neighborhood, selected artists will be paired with a glass, projection/light, or neon artist to collaborate, building off the muralist’s design to create works that extend off the “page” (or in this case wall). The committee is interested in how the mural can be activated at night, transforming environment and landscape of the NEON District as the sun goes down. WHERE Three major gateway walls at the edges of the NEON District in Norfolk, VA. Each of the selected muralists will be given one wall to develop collaboratively with a preselected 3D artist. T H E M E ( S ):L I G H T Light is both a particle and a wave; it is what you seek in the darkness. White light is the sum of all colors; light is what calls you home; it is what makes you feel safe at night. Light is reflected and refracted; it is represented in both technology and nature. How would you develop a large scale mural that reconsiders the concept of light? HONORARIUM Payment will vary depending on size of assigned wall, from $3,000 to $6,000 plus materials budget. TIMELINE Application deadline May 26, 2015. Selected artists will be notified by mid-June 2015. Finalists submit final designs for review July 15. Projects are to be installed prior to October 1, 2015. Finished artworks will be featured during the Dawn of the NEON Festival October 15 and 16, 2015.
