Family Fun
Enjoy themed weeks of games, activities and
fun from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Favorites
include Sharks, Luau, Adventure, Sports, Fiesta and
more! The whole family will enjoy the poolside
games and contests all summer.

Afternoon Action
Kick-off weekend festivities with our active
programs for kids and adults. Kids’ Night Out and
Family Bonfires alternate Fridays. Parents are
invited to play in the tennis social each Friday or
when it is Kids’ Night Out, make it date night!
Field games and casual competitions will keep
the whole family smiling this summer.

Club Party Nights
This is the best party of the week! The whole family
can relax by the pool, purchase a BBQ dinner from
Juliana's and participate in our specially themed
activities led by our enthusiastic staff. You can find
the schedule of Club Party Nights on our website and
on the TV monitors in the Club.
Drop off the kids with our Junior staff to enjoy
themed activities, swimming and a pizza dinner.
Kids will play, laugh and be ready for a good night
sleep!

Swim Lessons
Water Babies & Water Tots • 6 months - 3 years
A musical play-based parent-child class designed to familiarize
children with playing in and around water.
June 20th - August 23rd - Cost $81
Tuesdays at 12:00pm, Saturdays & Sundays at 9:00am & 9:30am
Preschool Aquatics: orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them become
comfortable floating and moving through water
Level 1(ages 5+): introduces children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic skills
Level 2 (ages 5+): gives swimmers success with fundamental skills
Level 3: (ages 6+): builds on the skills in Level 2 by taking swimmers into deeper water
Level 4/5: lap-based class aimed at strong swimmers who are familiar with nearly all the strokes

Swim Team • Ages 5 - 16*
Join the Sharks! Summer swim team is a fun and supportive way to keep swimming this summer.
Kids practice competitive swimming techniques and swimming for fitness. *Must be able to swim 1 lap of the
pool unassisted.

Practice: Monday-Thursday 7:30-8:30am (starts June 29)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 5-6pm (starts June 22)

Did you know? We carefully monitor the pool
water to ensure a safe swimming environment
every 2 hours. A pool manager is in charge of
the lifeguards and continuously surveys the
pool area to ensure member safety. The splash
park water is continually treated for cleanliness
and recycled for safe fun!

Tennis
Kids build confidence when they are having fun and experience success in an activity. Our Progressive Tennis
program is the right environment for just that type of growth. Progressive Tennis is fun and challenging,
and the skills practiced on the court transfer seamlessly to other sports and aspects of kids’ lives.
Jr. Tennis Summer Season - June 9 - August 22
Red Ball, Beginner Group Lessons • 5 - 8 years
Learn to play tennis this summer starting with a smaller court, bigger racket and easy Red Ball.
This 1-hour lesson is a great way to break up a day of summer fun and learn a new sport.
Monday-Thursday, 4-5pm

Red Ball, Morning 2 hour Camp • 4-7 Years
Orange Ball Morning 2 hour Camp • 6-7 Years
Kids who are interested in tennis will enjoy this 2-hour Camp where we practice ball tracking,
body positioning, serving and scoring. Players develop their confidence in the game and have
fun with friends.

Full-Day Tennis Camp • 8-17years
Great exercise, fun tennis games, level-specific coaching and skill development.

We learn to play tennis in a social setting, helping kids meet new friends and get important exercise.

Kids looking to fine-tune their competitive skills or move to the next level of play are encouraged

Camp Thoreau &
Adventure Camp
Grades PreK-10
A traditional day camp right on the grounds of The
Thoreau Club! For over 60 years, Camp Thoreau
has hosted hundreds of kids, pre-school through
10th grade. Our philosophy is to give kids the
chance to experience nature and participate in
activities in a safe and supportive environment.
Our guiding principals are: respect, risk-taking,
friendship, responsibility and teamwork.
Kids participate in age-appropriate activities with
their Division which is organized by grade. During
a session campers will experience Red Cross Swim
Lessons, Archery, Tennis, Project Adventure, Arts
& Crafts, Nature, Sailing, Land Sports, Drama &
Music and more!

Half-day camp for kids ages 4-7
Fun, action packed outdoor experiences enriched
with weekly themed activities: tennis, archery,
nature, field games, creative arts, cooking and
recreational swimming.
Activities promote physical, social, emotional and
intellectual development. Campers will make new
friends, learn new skills, shape their confidence and
increase self-esteem.

Favorites of this age-group are Zumba, Tabata, Power, Groove and Yoga. We recommend introducing yourself to
the instructor and discuss any considerations before class starts. Wear comfortable clothing and drink plenty of

Personal Training • Ages10-16
Kids need physical activity to grow into healthy intelligent adults. Budding athletes
and TV addicted kids will benefit from 1-on-1 training. We’ll help them get moving
in fun and safe ways to build healthy habits.

Birthday Parties
Birthday parties at Thoreau Club include
age-appropriate activities and end with 30 minutes
in our party room. All you have to do is bring the
birthday child and refreshments! Kids ages 3+

Refreshments
We are committed to offering convenient, healthy and delicious refreshment options during your visit at The
Thoreau Club.
Juliana’s @ Thoreau - Members may order delicious food from our convenient snack bar. Options include: fresh
salads, panini's, wraps, pizza, ice cream, beverages and other healthy snacks. Available on weekends only from
Memorial Day - June 22nd from 11:00am to 7:00pm. Open daily June 23rd - September 7th from 11:00am - 7:00pm.
Grill Poolside - Members are welcome to bring meals, ingredients and grilling tools from home and use the gas
grills provided to make a family meal poolside! Alcoholic drinks are not permitted on The Thoreau Club property.
Wilder Cuisine - Members may order meals from our partner Wilder Cuisine featuring healthy, fresh main dishes,
sides and desserts. Order 3 days in advance to be delivered to The Thoreau for pick-up in the refrigerator near
Reception.
Quick Snacks - Our cafeteria on the main floor includes vending machines with drinks and snacks that accept cash
and credit cards.
Check-in
To relieve reception area back-ups on busy summer days, we will make pool-side check-in available. By-pass
reception when you see the “Poolside Check-in Open” sign to get to the pool quicker! Members bringing guests will
need to check-in at reception.
Thunder
When the courts and pools are uncovered, and when the bubble is over the pool:
If the Pool Manager hears or sees thunder or lightning we evacuate and close the pool(s)/courts.
The pools and courts stay closed until 30 minutes after we hear the last “rumble” of thunder. If you are planning to
play tennis or swim during the summer and hear thunder - or if you are planning to swim when the bubble is over
the pool - please check the website or sign-up for text notification.

Meet the Experts
Ryan Adamonis, ryan@thoreau.com
Ryan Adamonis is the Director of Junior Tennis. He is a dynamic, energetic coach who has worked
with both the youngest junior and top ranked players. Ryan was an assistant coach for the men’s
team at the University of Buffalo and directed their High Performance program. He has
coached USTA, DBH and mixed doubles league players as well as recreational players. Ryan
was selected as a USTA Zonal Team Coach for New England for
the past three years and has coached a National JTT team from New England.
Mike DeLone, Aquatics Director, mike@thoreau.com
Mike is The Thoreau Club Aquatics Director. He graduated from UNH, spent four summers at Camp
Nashoba North in Maine, worked on Carnival Cruise Lines, at Boston Sport Club in Waltham and
Westford Racquet & Fitness Club before joining The Thoreau Club. He is responsible for water safety,
training, lifeguards and is a swim instructor and swim team coach. He has swum with turtles and
dolphins and has a Rubik's Cube record.

Amy is loved by all Thoreau kids! She oversees Kids' Place, Kid's Night Out, Afternoon Action and
birthday parties. Amy always has a smile on her face and is looking forward to sharing her creative
talents all summer long.

J is a motivating swim coach, and 35 years of experience working with kids backs up his
thoughtful approach to coaching athletes and kids learning to swim. J is a father and
grandfather.
Glenn Swaim, glenn@thoreau.com
Glenn is the Wellness Director at Thoreau Club. He has over 30 years experience in the fitness
industry,a B.S. in Exercise Science and is an American Heart Associate CPR/AED
instructor. Glenn is a community basketball coach and has led kids’ sports camps. He has
two teenage children.
Ken Olson, Camp Thoreau Director, ken@thoreau.com
As a teacher and administrator in the Somerville Public Schools for over 20 years, Ken brings
significant educator experience to Camp Thoreau. In addition, he has 15 years of experience
directing camps, supervising and developing high school, college and adult staff and coordinating
youth activities. Ken also has considerable high school coaching experience, serving as a head
basketball and baseball coach for 12 years. Ken enthusiastically embraces Camp Thoreau’s traditions
and philosophy and is passionate about delivering a summer of fun while accomplishing our
objective of providing a safe, quality experience for our camp families.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS & WITHDRAWALS:
n All program charges will be done at the beginning of the program.
n For on-going group lessons:
a. Credits will be issued for extended illnesses, long-term injury and cancellation
of Membership.
b. If you are dissatisfied with your group, immediately contact the instructor or department
Manager to discuss options.
n For one-day events and appointments (e.g., private lessons, personal training, spa, nutritional
consultations, open court bookings, etc.), cancellations must be made a minimum of 24 hours
in advance to avoid being charged the regular cost.
n For complimentary classes, events and programs that require advance sign-ups, cancellations must
be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance, cycle classes require 2 hrs. advance notice; otherwise
a $15 no-show fee will be charged.
n Cancellations for programs will be accepted within 48 hours after the second class. At this time
you will be charged for the two classes taken and a cancellation fee equal to 10% of the program’s
total cost, up to $25. The remainder of the program cost will be refunded. Cancellations after the
48 hours are non-refundable.

listed in this guide may be cancelled or postponed. The Club may decide to change information found in this guide with
