scrtec conference program book - International Tuba Euphonium
WELCOME! We would like to personally welcome each of you to the 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference at the University of Central Arkansas! It has been a pleasure corresponding and planning with each of you over the last 12 months to bring the best our region has to offer to UCA. Over 300 attendees from all over the mid-south are attending SCRTEC 2015 for three days of concerts, competitions, recitals, lectures, and clinics featuring some of the most prominent tuba and euphonium artists in the country. The conference kicks off with one of the largest regional competitions in ITEA history and what is sure to be an exceptional concert by UCA Artists in Residence Rhythm and Brass. Be sure to catch their slate of events scattered across the program this weekend. After Thursday’s program, let’s all meet at The Draft--right by UCA--for some “hangtime” with the group. Friday afternoon, we are joined by the SCRTEC 2015 Low Brass Section who will work with our Mock Tuba Competition Winner and present a masterclass on orchestral excerpts and style. Friday night features the UCA Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Ricky Brooks, performing some brand new pieces for tuba and euphonium with Wind Ensemble. Afterwards, we’ll all head to Buffalo Wild Wings for what will surely be the highlight of the conference -- LIVE TUBA EUPHONIUM TEAM TRIVIA! Play as a team with your studio, or with your friends at the conference for some serious bragging rights! Saturday wraps up with masterclasses from some of the finest teachers in our field and the final gala concert featuring the North American Brass Band Association’s Award-Winning Natural State Brass Band with guest soloists. In closing, we would like to thank each of you for attending SCRTEC and being a part of ITEA. You are truly our greatest asset and ambassadors for our instruments. We could not accomplish what we do without your support. We would also like to thank Dr. Paige Rose and the entire UCA Music Department for their exceptional support in helping to make this conference an event to remember. Please enjoy your time at SCRTEC and we promise the next few days will be educational and inspiring! Saturday, March 21st - The Draft Ultimate Sports Grill We’re headed back to The Draft for the final hang….sure to be one for the history books! 8 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference WHERE ELSE SHOULD WE EAT IN CONWAY? Other recommendations for places to eat include our Christian Cafeteria on campus who are offering a special deal for the conference. $6 for an all you can eat buffet for lunch, just mention you’re with the Tuba Euphonium Conference. Hours for the cafeteria are: Friday March 20 Breakfast and Lunch 7am – 2pm Lite Lunch 2pm – 4pm Dinner 4pm – 6pm Saturday March 21 – Saturday March 28, 2015 Continental Breakfast 8am – 9am Lunch 12am – 1pm Dinner 5pm – 6pm ••• Otherwise, you’ll want to check out Subway just west of campus (easily walkable). Bears Den Pizza is in the same plaza just west of campus. They open at 3pm and serve pizza, entrees, and bar food. This is your typical college hangout. Downtown Conway has quite a bit to offer. JJ’s Grill and Chill has GREAT food, and is right next door to Old Chicago. If you’re in the mood for some New Orleans, check out Mike’s Place…but bring your wallet, it’s pretty pricey. East of I-40 has your typical Chilis, TGI Fridays, and Buffalo Wild Wings. If you happen to wake up for breakfast, we recommend Stoby’s right by campus. Very small place with amazing food! In north Conway, we recommend ZaZa’s Wood Fired Pizza and Salads right next to Panera and across from the Purple Cow, and 50’s style burger joint famous in Arkansas. If none of these sound appealing, there’s always Yelp! 9 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Thursday, March 19th Time Event Type Location Event 9:00 AM Rehearsal Ida Waldran Rhythm and Brass Rehearsal 10:50 AM Masterclass Recital Hall Rhythm and Brass Composition Masterclass 12:00 PM Meeting Band Room SCRTEC Judges Meeting 1:00 PM Competition Band Room Artist Tuba Competition 1:00 PM Competition Ida Waldran Chamber Music Competition 1:00 PM Competition Choir Room Mock Orchestral Tuba Competition 1:40 PM Masterclass Recital Hall Book Lecture: Rhythms of the Game - Rhythm and Brass 2:00 PM Competition Room 125 Young Artist Tuba Competition 4:00 PM Recital Recital Hall Richard Demy, Ophicleide 4:30 PM Competition Recital Hall Artist Euphonium Competition 4:30 PM Competition Choir Room Mock Band Euphonium Competition 7:30 PM Concert Ida Waldran Rhythm and Brass - UCA Artists in Residence 11 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Friday, March 20th Time Event Type Location Event 8:00 am Warmup Band Room Warmup with Mike Forbes 8:00 am Recital Recital Hall Joseph Skillen, tuba 8:30 am Recital Recital Hall Ed Owen, tuba 9:00 am Competition Ida Waldran Artist Euphonium Competition Finalists 9:00 am Competition Band Room Young Artist Tuba Competition Finalists 9:00 am Recital Recital Hall Jeremy Crawford, tuba 9:30 am Recital Recital Hall Brian Gallion, tuba 10:00am Competition Ida Waldran Artist Tuba Competition Finalists 10:00 am Clinic Room 316 Instrument Maintenance, Joe Sellmansberger 10:30 am Recital Recital Hall Daniel Stull, euphonium 11:00 am Recital Recital Hall Ben Pierce, euphonium 11:00 am Ensemble Ida Waldran 11:30 am Ensemble Ida Waldran 11:30 am Ensemble Recital Hall North Texas Euphonium Quartet 11:30 am Clinic Room 316 Future careers for the Low Brass Musician, Dan Sipes 12:00 pm Clinic Band Room Rhythm and Brass with UCA Jazz 1 Ensemble 12:00 pm Ensemble Ida Waldran Tennessee State University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble Louisiana Tech University Low Brass Ensemble University of Missouri-Kansas City TubaEuphonium Ensemble 12 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Friday, March 20th, continued... 12:30 pm Ensemble Ida Waldran Arkansas State University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble 1:00 pm Recital Recital Hall Patrick Nyren, euphonium Your brain: how it works, why it is structured to hinder your performing, and what you can do about it, Tom Stein Louisiana State University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble 1:00 pm Clinic MU 131 1:00 pm Ensemble Ida Waldran 1:30 pm Masterclass Band Room 1:30 pm Ensemble Ida Waldran 2:00 pm Clinic MU 131 2:00 pm Recital Recital Hall Jarrod Williams, tuba 2:00 pm Ensemble Ida Waldran University of Alabama Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble 2:30 pm Recital Recital Hall Scott Roeder, tuba 3:00 pm Masterclass MU 131 3:00 pm Masterclass Recital Hall 3:30 pm Clinic Band Room 4:00 pm Clinic MU 131 4:30 pm Recital Ida Waldran 7:30 pm Concert Ida Waldran Chamber Music: Rhythm & Brass University of Mississippi Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble Creating an Electronic Accompaniment for Solo Performance, Daniel Frost Military Bands: Opportunities Outside the Premier Bands, Patrick Rettger Dennis Nulty and the SCRTEC Trombone Section Our Instruments Are Just Not Chromatic, Joe Skillen Using effective learning methods for productive practice, Jeff Barbee Demondrae Thurman, euphonium & Charles Villarrubia, tuba UCA Wind Ensemble with Christian Carichner, Kevin Sanders, Gail Robertson, and Adam Lessard 13 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Saturday, March 21st Time Event Type Location Event 8:00 am Warmup Band Room Warmup with Mike Forbes 8:00 am Recital Recital Hall JD Salas, tuba 8:30 am Recital Recital Hall Kendall Prinz, tuba 9:00 am Masterclass Band Room 9:00 am Masterclass Choir Room 9:00 am Clinic MU 131 9:00 am Recital Recital Hall Micah Everett, euphonium 9:30 am Recital Recital Hall Daniel Frost, tuba 10:00 am Recital Recital Hall Jesse Orth, tuba 10:00 am Ensemble Ida Waldran University of Southern Mississippi 10:00 am Clinic Band Room 10:00 am Clinic MU 131 10:30 am Recital Recital Hall Thomas Stein, tuba 10:30 am Ensemble Ida Waldran University of Arkansas 11:00 am Recital Recital Hall Nathan Gay, euphonium 11:00 am Ensemble Ida Waldran Jackson State University 11:00 am Masterclass Band Room Young Artist Tuba Competition Winners with Andrew Hitz Artist Tuba Competition Winners with David Fedderly Artist Euphonium Competition Winners with Dr. Brian Bowman Lindeman-Sobel-Potts, Kirk Ferguson Traditional Jazz: Getting Started, Joe Sellmansberger Arranging and Composing for Low Brass, Mike Forbes 14 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Saturday, March 21st, continued... It wants you to do things you shouldn’t, to think in ways that are bad for performing and practicing, and tricks you into keeping up these habits. We, as teachers and performers, have not done well in addressing this beast and learning to tame it to our needs and benefit. In this clinic we will discuss how the brain learns, strategies for better and more efficient preparation/ practice time, and practical ideas on enhancing your performance skills. These positions are prestigious and offer other strong benefits. Unfortunately, there are only approximately forty euphonium and one hundred tuba positions in United States orchestras and premier military bands and, as they are highly coveted, are difficult to win. Another potential avenue that often gets overlooked is a career in the non-premier military bands. While these positions do not have the same prestige, they have many of the same benefits as the premier bands. My presentation will examine the opportunities for tuba and euphonium players in the non-premier military bands. Envisioned is an open forum where the audience may ask whatever questions they have about the military bands. Premier band questions may also be answered but the focus will ultimately be on the non-premier bands. Furthermore, my intent is to involve other past and present military band personnel in a panel setting. MASTERCLASS Dennis Nulty and the SCRTEC Trombone Section RECITAL HALL Join Dennis Nulty and the SCRTEC low brass section as they do a demonstration and discussion of orchestral excerpts. In this clinic we will explore the pedagogical approach to teaching ascending intervals and lip flexibility. This clinic will serve as a reminder to all of us that brass instruments originated prior to the piano and the overtone series wins every time. Door prize potential is high and be sure to hear tip #7. 38 University of Central Arkansas 2015 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Return to Schedule 4:00PM FRIDAY MARCH 20TH CLINIC Jeff Barbee, University of Missouri-Kansas City MU 131 Presentation: Using effective learning methods for productive practice 4:30PM The presentation will cover effective practice methods that will increase the production of a practice session. Poor time management, inappropriate methods, and a lack of attentiveness with the task at hand often waste practice time. This presentation will address all of these issues. The steps involved will go into detail how the brain best learns new information. These concepts have been successfully applied, by both students and professionals, to brass, woodwinds, strings, voice, and percussion. The approach encourages purposeful, goal-oriented playing, practicing, and performing. Formed in 2013, FivE has attracted national attention for its distinguished sound, popular YouTube videos, and success with chamber music competitions. The group won 1st Prize at the 2014 Pennsylvania Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition, and finished as runner-up in the Eastern Division competition. In 2013, FivE was selected internationally as one of twelve ensembles to compete in the 40th Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the largest of its kind in the world. FivE is the only euphonium quartet ever to advance to the Fischoff quarterfinals. The recent emergence of euphonium quartet as a serious performing ensemble coincides with a need to add to the canon of original repertoire. As a result, FivE composes, arranges, and adapts new music and old favorites that are specifically tailored to the strengths of the ensemble. Members of the group have achieved national recognition as composers by placing in the MTNA Young Artist and Euphoniumcommisions.org composition contests. The group has gained exposure with performances at the U.S. Army Band Tuba Euphonium Workshop, the Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, The McCann School of Art, the Music at Penn’s Woods Summer Festival, and concerts in Florida, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. FivE also gainfully dedicates time to music education by performing at public schools and music camps. The quartet has performed at several schools along the east coast, and has most recently served as quartet-in-residence at Music on the River Concert Band Camp, a music camp held in central Virginia. RHYTHM & BRASS “Beyond Category” was a term the great Duke Ellington used as the highest form of praise for those artists who transcended normal boundaries. Since their inaugural season in 1993, Rhythm & Brass has lived up to the ideal of a musical presentation that is not bound by time, geography or culture. With the unique ability to incorporate influences as divergent as Josquin Des Prez, Pink Floyd, John Coltrane, Johann Sebastian Bach, and, of course, Duke Ellington, Rhythm & Brass searches for the commonality in these influences and fearlessly weaves them all into a single concert experience. While maintaining an active touring schedule, Rhythm & Brass has also performed at numerous special events including a 1994 New York concert debut at Carnegie Recital Hall with celebrated jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker. Commissions have been premiered at Chicago’s Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the national convention of the Music Educator’s National Conference. Their second album, Time in September (1995), includes original jazz compositions by R&B members and features award winning guitarist Gene Bertoncini as well as a commissioned work by the Grammy Nominated composer Maria Schneider. Christmas Time is Here (1996) was hailed by the national press as one of the most creative recordings for the holiday season. R&B’s recording More Money Jungle. . .Ellington Explorations (1998), on the KochJazz label, celebrates the centenary (1999) of one of America’s most significant composers and musical ambassadors, Duke Ellington. The album was described by Entertainment Weekly as “...smart and deliciously offcentered...” and was named by the New York Times as “Album of the Week” (May 7, 1999). Rhythm & Brass has been featured on “BET on Jazz” (Black Entertainment Television) performing several segments of the Ellington album. Sitting in an English Garden Waiting for the Sun, is an outrageous salute to the British invasion and includes music by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. Rhythm & Brass most recent project, “Inside the Blue Suitcase”, features original compositions from within the group. All of Rhythm & Brass’ recording projects are available on iTunes and CDBaby. The members of Rhythm & Brass maintain an active involvement in music education.
