Career cxperience/location: I had a 2013 summer internship at Los Alamos National Labatory as a
student research assistant.
Description of career experience (what I learned): During my intership I was exposed to a professional
and scientific environment in which I got the opptorunity to perform both lab and field work. I learned the
affects of implimented climate change and how it affects tree mortality in the juniper and pinon shrub lands
of northern New Mexico.
What is your perception of agriculture now: My idea about agriculture has evidently evolved around
hydrology due to the importance of how all living things need water, which is now becoming a scare
resource.
How has this career experience broadened your employment opportunities: Having this work
experience in the lab, as well as in the field, has given me an idea of what to expect in the near future. The
majority of wildlife related occupations require a decent amount of experience and I feel like I have enough
experience to get my foot in the door for hiring agencies to continue to build on my experience.
Career and research aspirations: A few of my current goals are to remain on the Dean’s List, graduate on
time, and eventually continue my education into graduate school. I hope to work for a government agency
in the future as a wildlife field researcher. Eventually, I would like to coordinate big game research projects
within the Rocky Mountains ranging anywhere from Canada down to New Mexico.
Skill Set: - ATV experience - C.A.D. – camping - chainsaw abilities – fishing - G.P.S. - G.I.S(some) extended hiking - horseback riding – hunting - microsoft office - telemetry(minor) - truck and trailer
operation - 4WD driving
The impact of my career experience: Due to the contributitution of the NRCT program, I was able to
gain an increadidble expierence during the school year, working for a professer and his graduate students. I
am getting a chance to work in the field as a graduate assiastant and to see what it takes to conduct a
graduate reseach study. This expierence and previuous expierences will definaielty impact my future
educational and career goals. I will be more prepared on what to expect when entering graduate school and
taking on my own project. I will have the experience and knowledge that employers will be looking for
when it comes to qualifing for a permanent poisition.
