LOCATION Bloch Sousa Youth Ending Slavery Presenter: Clare McLeod, St. Mary’s Academy student Youth Ending Slavery is a Portland-based non-profit led completely by youth. Our mission is to combat human trafficking by educating youth and out subsequent communities—thus empowering youth to be advocates for change. Our non-profit is spearheaded by a group of five extremely passionate board members, the organization truly flourishes by implementing chapters in high schools across the region. We will present how YES chapters can be established and maintained while also discussing the importance of a youth voice in the fight against human trafficking. Joplin Peace Jam Presenter: Darren Reiley; PeaceJam Regional Coordinator PeaceJam is an international, year-long, ongoing educational program for youth ages 5-25. The participating Nobel Peace Laureates are directly involved in developing the PeaceJam curriculum and the program itself. PeaceJam is the only organization in the world which has so many Nobel Peace Laureates working together long-term for a common cause – the leadership development of our youth. Seeger Growing in Leadership with the American Red Cross Presenters: Kim Schlosser and Cassi MacQueen, American Red Cross Together we will take a look at the 3 programs for High School students being offered by the Red Cross: Leaders Save Lives, High School Leadership Program and the High School Scholarship Program. Get all the information you need, and get your questions answered in this workshop. Studio A Sparrow Club Presenters: Forest Grove High School Sparrow Clubs are proof that you’re never too young to make a difference. As the nation’s only youth-based charity of its kind, Sparrow Clubs not only provides financial and emotional support for critically ill children and their families, but also empowers kids to help kids through charitable service to their communities. Come learn first hand how FGHS has helped our Sparrow and how it has helped unify our school. Vista II Service-Learning Continued . . . 4:30—5:15 p.m. Kids Making Miracles for Doernbecher Honor Flights Presenter: Mallory Tyler, Doernbecher Foundation and Lindsay Walker, Teacher at Edy Ridge Elementary in Sherwood Students who have been fundraising through the Kids Making Miracles (KMM) program at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation have been raising funds for over 23 years and have raised more than $9 million for OHSU Doernbecher. In the process students have learned valuable lessons about the importance of philanthropy, helping their community and being leaders in their schools. This workshop will include Doernbecher mission moment, tips for successful fundraising campaigns, a professional toolkit, and step-by-step instructions for how to get started. Presenter: Heather Ransom, Adviser; South Middle School Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Presenter: Even Wesley, Thirst Project Speaker Do you want to change the world? Do you want to find out how you can save Thirst Project hundreds of lives? Do you love helping people? Help Thirst Project build wells in Swaziland 2022 developing countries. Our mission is to end the water crisis in the country of Swaziland. Helps us make history as we do what has never been done before — give an entire COUNTRY clean drinking water. Thank You! Studio B/C Director’s Room Vista I Sunday Evening Breakout Sessions Round 1 = 7:00 - 7:45 p.m. TITLE PRESENTER(S) AND DESCRIPTION LOCATION Reverse-Engineering Your Story Keynote Speaker: Kyle Scheele (High School Only) Playing off my keynote “Story of My Life” this workshop goes into greater detail on the nuts and bolts of how to actually LIVE a better story. Through group interaction and individual soul-searching, you will develop an actionable set of steps to take in your quest for a better story. Vista I The Challenge to Change Speaker Showcase: Eldridge Broussard III (Middle School Only) El better known as, Mr. Own Who You Are, is an international Speaker and Author. During his speaker showcase he will be sharing some of the challenges we face in our goal of having leadership beyond the limits. He will have a few exercises that will push you to the limits in how you view leadership, influence and the challenges needed to Own Who You Are to go beyond those limits. During this workshop El will share about the realities we face in leadership and more importantly why how we view and deal with our realities is more important than the reality itself. Sousa #icanhelp Presenters: Kelsey Bowers, adviser Tualatin HS and Maegan MacKelvie, adviser; Ridgeview HS Excelsior Middle School leadership teacher Kim Karr co-founded a program called #iCANHELP when inspired by a concerned student after a fake and damaging Facebook page was created on a local teacher. Kim realized that STUDENTS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING about all the bullying and negativity on social media sites, they just needed the right tools to respond. The #iCANHELP message is clear- one person has the power to make a difference and delete negativity online and in his or her life. Joplin What is a Leader? Presenter: Rachel Haas, SEC Northwest Rep.; Clatskanie Jr./Sr. HS Instead of listening let’s turn the tables and hear you talking. Come discuss with other students what it means to be a leader. Seeger Leading Our Youth in the Right Direction Presenter: Maurie Harbick, SEC At-Large Rep.; Oregon City HS Come to this workshop to learn about the importance of connecting your student council with the youth of your community, and how to help them develop and grow as leaders. Effective, FUN and Spirited Assemblies Presenters: Connor Grove, Steve Ruiz, Tyler Rabe, Abiy Welch and Christan Riddle; Hillsboro HS Learn how to use creative themes, costumes, props, music, special effects and more to easily create assemblies that will appeal to everybody! This workshop also includes assembly footage, large scale game ideas, handouts and photos. It is designed for ANY school on ANY budget to be able to walk away with fantastic assembly ideas for next year. Studio B/C Vista II Round 1 = 7:00 - 7:45 p.m. Leadership at the Capitol Presenter: Ben Bowman, OASC Alumni and future Governor Would you like to take your leadership skills to the next level? OASC is looking for students interested in getting involved in the political process to represent their peers in public policy decisions at the state level. It’s important for the student voice to be represented in the politics and government, since students are the ones impacted by many state-level decisions, particularly in education. Come hear what it’s like to testify in front of a committee in the state legislature and meet with elected leaders. Director’s Room Lip Sync Jordan Panganiban; Forest Grove High School Imagine a school-wide dance-off between the classes and even staff members. Through Lip Sync, students become unified through forming class themes, decorating class hallways, and choreographing their own unique dance routines for one BIG assembly. Lead your class to dance-off victory, and come learn what it takes to LIP SYNC. An empty room, music, beach balls, and hula-hoops are Live, Laugh & Lead! required . . . get the idea? Positive leadership skills including forgiveness, risktaking, teamwork are explored and then practiced. Participants leave ready to use the leadership and life skills learned during this workshop. Bloch Speaker Showcase: Gabe Murfitt (Middle School Only) Gabe is an inspiring speaker and author who challenges his audiences to live with courage in the face of life’s greatest challenges and adversities. Gabe is a young man with an amazing story but he feels his story is not that different from yours. Gabe has been a guest speaker at school and events around the United States and his uplifting story has been featured on Oprah, Good Morning America and the local news. Sousa Live with Courage Survivor "Recipe for Leadership" OASC Summer Leadership Camp! Presenters: Tualatin High School A week long event where selected contestants have to compete in various challenges. Students must build relationships, and get outside their comfort zone. This workshop will give you the behind the scenes scoop on how to bring Survivor to your school. This workshop is for any adviser interested in improving the quality , spirit, novelty, tone or culture of their assemblies. We will go over: successful assembly planning, helping kids keep assemblies organized and on track, including staff to increase assembly buy-in, and making it all happen without losing our minds.
