37098 Charles Town Pike | Hillsboro, VA 20132 | www.OldStoneSchool.org May 15, 2015 Dear Friend of the Old Stone School, We are happy to announce the beginning of a new season at the Old Stone School—our community center. For almost 150 years, this historic treasure has been the foundation for wonderful memories. Students who attended school here fondly remember the teachers, their friends, delicious food, great performances, and the strong sense of community. Though the building now serves a different purpose, it still embodies our sense of community, and at our community center, we still have delicious food, great performances, and celebrations where new memories are made every year. The Old Stone School is managed by the non-profit organization called the Hillsboro Community Association. The HCA was formed in 1976 when a decision was made to demolish the building after it sat vacant for 10 years. Since then, this non-profit has worked to renovate, repair, manage, and maintain this building. To meet these goals, the HCA conducts an annual membership and donation drive, plans and manages events, and rents the building for weddings, receptions, business meetings, and more. We are writing today to ask you to join our efforts and become a Friend of the Old Stone School! We are facing what seems to be an insurmountable goal to raise more than $400,000. These funds are needed for routine maintenance costs, operating expenses, and major renovations and repairs. For example, the electrical system needs to be replaced to meet growing needs; the roof needs to be replaced; and interior and exterior walls need repair. Additionally, just like your home or business, we have monthly costs for water, trash, electric, fuel, cleaning, supplies, and lawn care. We also have to address minor issues before they become major ones. Join us in 2015 for Signature Events at the Old Stone School! Last year, our efforts to raise funds and increase activity as a community center included hosting 14 events, not including the market! This year, our outdoor market will be four times—once a season held in conjunction with four signature events: ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Spring Art and Garden Show May 29 and 30 Independence Day Celebration July 3 Hillsboro Heritage Day October 16 and 17 Christmas in Hillsboro Festival December 12 and 13 Support these events that bring our community together by becoming a sponsor! Our events also carry their own costs, and the greatest of these is the fireworks for our annual Independence Day Celebration. The fireworks alone are $7,900 this year. Every year for the past few years, the HCA has lost more Learn more at www.OldStoneSchool.org. than $2,000 because we haven’t received enough in donations to cover the cost of the fireworks. This is not a loss we can continue to bear. If we don’t raise enough this year, there is a good chance this will be the last year we host this wonderful celebration. This would be a very sad decision for us and for our community. You can help...and now you can donate online! Become a Friend of the Old Stone School by joining the Hillsboro Community Association and making a donation to help us maintain the building, fund the fireworks, and start to make much needed major repairs. We are thrilled to let you know that we are now also able to accept dues and donations online! Visit our website at www.OldStoneSchool.org. The Old Stone School community center means so much to us, and we want it to have meaning for our children and our children’s children as the place they go to celebrate and enjoy time with friends and neighbors. It may no longer be a school, but this is a place where we all learn about the value and importance of community and preserving our historic treasures. Please support our efforts with the Old Stone School. Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely, Mark T.
