Lean and Six Sigma Training What’s the difference?
By David Athon, the Athon Group
It’s a question many have asked, but few have received definitive answers. In
businesses like manufacturing, everything can be defined as a process. Within these processes, there are
two types of activities: Value Added (VA) and Non-Value Added (NVA). VA activities are those that change
the form, fit, or function of the product being sold. Customers are willing to pay for these activities because
they improve product value. Conversely, NVA activities do not physically change the product but still
consume valuable portions of the manufacturer’s time and resources. As the customer places no value on
these processes, he or she is unwilling to pay for these changes and these costs can eat into company profit.
Lean Enterprise (LE) attacks, diminishes, or deletes these NVA activities. LE philosophy states that all
processes contain NVA activities, adding to the lead time of the product. Lean tools methodically identify and
extinguish NVA activities to allow faster product flow through VA processes, meeting customer’s needs better.
Activities like transportation, inventory holds, or unnecessary processing slowing production are changed.
Six Sigma (SS) attacks VA activities by carefully inspecting processes that may, in the eyes of the
customers, cause future product defects. SS is a statistically based problem solving methodology that allows
us to identify which inputs to the VA activity are causing defects. By using the SS tools, the company can
identify root causes of problems, eliminate them from processes, and prevent potential bottlenecks.
Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma are very powerful, but wouldn’t it be great if we could train everyone in our
organizations how to apply these tools? We can - by utilizing Kaizen Events (KE) within our companies.
Kaizen is a Japanese word that means “Good Change”. A KE is a cross-functional group of people that come
together for a short, specified period of time to attach a well-scoped problem. KE are not only powerful weeks
that improve processes; they are used to train others in the organization how to use LE and SS toolkits.
Kaizen is good for the organization and usually spreads quickly, often in company totality within 3-5 years.
Call VTC Business & Industry Services today at 229-333-2122 for a free consultation on Kaizen Events,
Lean Enterprise, and Six Sigma. We can help you decide which training area is right for your company. We
help you add the value your customers demand!
